NFT: Perfect Solos in Rock'n Roll

Reb8thVA : 9/21/2017 11:08 am
I'm tired of all the negative football talk. Are there any songs for you that come to mind, that when you hear the solo, guitar or any other instrument, that for you it is one of the most perfect things you've ever heard?

For me, to immediately come to mind. First- Jimmy Page's solo in Stairway to Heaven. The song may be overplayed but the solo still moves me. Second is Clarence Clemmon's saxophone solo in Jungleland. I could listen to that forever. His solo in Prove it All Night is also up thee for me.

Dreams. Absolutely hypnotic.

Also - I think virtually ALL of David Gilmour's leads are spot on. I tell anyone who wants to learn lead guitar to do an in-depth study of the lead in "Comfortably Numb" it is perfect.

I'll also throw in a Skunk Baxter in "My Old School".

Elliot Randall's solo is dead perfect. Recorded in one take. This is how you play a rock and roll guitar solo.

Just about any solo by Buckethead, especially love the funky slap guitar ones he did back when playing with Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains. Probably one of my favorite groups and most underrated, they started as an improv group never having played before they met at Bonaroo one year, and just crushed it. Loved how funky they were, I'm not really into jam bands, but they were just so different and gelled so well together, I remember downloading all of their live albums from that one tour they went on, as they were such a short lived band.

Dogs - one of my all-time favorite albums and easily favorite Floyd Album - Animals

As an 80's
pjcas18 : 9/21/2017 2:03 pm : link
kid I never thought there could possibly be anyone better than Eddie Van Halen. And Eruption was about as skilled as someone could be with a guitar.

Now that I'm older I still think EVH is immensely skilled though he gets overlooked because there just isn't much depth to Van Halen's music.

So late in life I have grown to admire Stevie Ray Vaughan so much more and would say that Texas Flood is probably the best "guitar solo" or guitar playing by anyone IMO.

Jimi Hendrix would probably be next and it could be any one of four of five different songs.
David Gilmour - Comfortable Numb
mamu : 9/21/2017 2:03 pm : link
George Harrison - Can't Buy Me Love
George Harrison - Something
Eric Clapton - While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Danny Cedrone (Bill Haley) - Rock Around the Clock
Felder and Walsh - Hotel California
Brian May - We Will Rock You
Jimmy Page - Stairway to Heaven
Knopfler - Sultans of Swing
Brian Setzer - Rock This Town
Warren DeMartini - Lay It Down

I'd also put
Reb8thVA : 9/21/2017 2:11 pm : link
Lindsey Buckingham's solo on "Go Your own Way" up there. It might not be technically great but it fits the song well and you can feel his anger at Stevie Nicks.
Leslie West has a couple of great solos
Ira : 9/21/2017 2:12 pm : link
in Theme From An Imaginary Western.
Some of the most anger or emotion

I've heard from a guitar came from Johnny Greenwood of Radiohead on Creep.

I never knew wtf he was doing until I heard Radiohead interviewed and Thom Yorke said Greenwood hated the song so much he was trying to ruin it.

I think it works. Not something I'd say belongs in this discussion for perfect solo, but an interesting piece of music and story (IMO at least).
Can't ever hear too much Mark Knopfler.

Love the riffs in Once Upon a Time in the West.

Time Waits for No One - Rolling Stones
pganut : 9/21/2017 2:33 pm : link
Mick Taylor's guitar solo brings me to a perfect summer day every time I hear it.
