Has Flowers been provided the longest leash

gmen9892 : 9/21/2017 3:47 pm
in Giants history? I am 32 years old, and I cant remember the last terrible player that was given this much time to get better and failed to do so without getting benched. I was initially one of the more patient fans hoping that this year would be the year that the light would go on.

We are now 33 starts deep and not only has he not shown an ounce of progress, but you can argue he has actually regressed a good bit from his rookie year. He has failed to correct any technical issues that have plagued him since being drafted.

Can any other, maybe older, Giant fans recall of a player that was given this much time to develop?

JR and BM otherwise I don't know what possible reason there could be to not bring in competition.. Over the last 2 full years he has graded worse than 40+ LTs in the league.. Half the teams have better backup than him..
Had Will B. not been hurt

then Flowers would have been put at RG or RT to start his career and develop into a LT. Where the coaches are at fault is not acknowledging his technique flaws and moving him to RG or RT after his rookie season.

Scott Gragg played better than Flowers. At least Gragg could run block and was on the RIGHT side!

was never more than a spot player. We are talking a starter at a high profile position..

Reese's premium draft picks tend to have a very long leash. Some have suggested his ego plays a role into that.
Part of it is JR NEEDS him to succeed
MotownGIANTS : 9/21/2017 4:20 pm : link
Look the myth that the OL has been ignored is very easy to debunk ....

Since the year Eli was picked we have spent 13 picks on OL ranging from 1st to 7th now to mention FA pickups

That means JR's OL talent evaluators are not good and/or neither is he ... so its not that it has been ignored they just KEEP failing .... with that he needs Flowers to succeed because as an owner he has to answer for the poor picks

We changed OL coaches .... so is it the scheme (Reese picked McAdoo .... he is his coach) ... Is a rookie HC saying he does not want and like teh 2 time SB MVP QB he is not good enough for him???

The issue is the OL but the decision makers and talent eval folks are the root ...

Who took until year 4. Unfortunately, I was a bit too young to monitor his progress throughout the first 3 years. I very much doubt he was as bad as Flowers was for the first 3 years.

Brown, Greg Bishop there are literally 100's of players that are given every chance in the world to either succeed or flop

Was a great returner first. He was not getting people killed either, there is no example, none.

Dave Brown was given 3 years. He is probably the best candidate. My point was really not just the time given, but the stretch of horrific play in that time. I really dont think there has been 100's of players that have been this bad and have seen their way through 3+ years of bottom of the league level play.

Neither Brewer or Robinson actually played much. Willy Jo is a good one, but even he only started 17 games for the Giants before they pulled the plug. About half the games that Flowers has now started.

Not really. He was given only two years and he was actually on his way out the door in year three after the Giants drafted Jurevicius and Alford in the 2nd and 3rd rounds of the 1998 draft, but that's when he turned his game around. Also he wasn't a starter.

And there in lies the rub, because it's much easier to show patience with a young player when they play a position that can be moved in and out of the lineup on a play by play basis, but that's not the case with an OL. Either he starts and plays the game or he sits the bench waiting for an injury.
The fact that they are letting him continue to play,

Says alot about Mcadoo and Reese. I swear I need to work for the Giants, knowing you have that much security must be awesome. You can suck at your job and know you will not lose it? Lol

Nilay Shah is a prime example of incompetence in the organization. He runs the digital/social media. He finally figured out how to embed a video, but for the longest time, their video on their site was trash. It is like he was testing the site with Netscape 4.7. Dude should have been shit-canned.
The problem is, its a double-edged sword
gmen9892 : 9/21/2017 5:07 pm : link
I respect the Giants philosophy of trying to develop players and giving draft picks time to grow. The problem is, there is a fine line between patience, and giving a player too much time before pulling the plug. As was mentioned before, that problem is exacerbated when the young player is an offensive lineman or a cornerback, because those positions can costs teams games.

It seems that we have reached the point of too much patience for Flowers and he is not only costing the team games, but ultimately could cost them the season (and God forbid Eli's career).
I remember when
McNally's_Nuts : 9/21/2017 5:48 pm : link
David Wilson first fumbled. He was benched for the rest of the game.

Didn't Eli Apple get benched last year against the Eagles?

Boggles my mind that this hasn't happened with Flowers.
