NFT: Rome, Italy Advice

DaddyM89 : 9/21/2017 4:20 pm
Sending my parents to Rome in a few months, and looking for some advice for things for them to do. They are both in their early 60s, so not really looking into the party/club scene. Dad does love good wine though, and I am sure they will want to check out a few good restaurants as well. Thanks in advance for your help.
The best advice I could give...

is to get the Rome city pass in order to skip the lines.

Also, Rick Steves is a great resource as well.

Rome is big for this, and its a fanastic way to eat dinner or have a night cap. You can get hotels overlooking the Forum, the Colisseum, the Pantheon, the Vatican, etc. Its big business.
Tbh Rome is total Ass

Compared to every other city in the country, I would rank it dead last. The food is horrible, I felt its sights and museums were not as captivating as other cities, and I just didnt enjoy the feel of the city and the piazzas.

If you can rebook, send them to Florence, theres a magic floating around in that city that I never experienced anywhere else.
To each his own, Rome is my 2nd favorite city behind London

and I'm not that enamoured with Florence. I really like Venice though. Rome is fun because of all the sites. Things like the Roman Forum, Colliseum, Vatican, Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Circus Maximus, etc., etc, etc.

I just find the history fascinating. Also like with any city, you can find some good food and touristy food. I did find the pasta anywhere very good though, even the take-out plces.

I sort of agree with this although I thought Venice was the most overrated city. I don't disagree with what you are saying but if you have never been there before it has a ton to see so that alone is worth it. I too was not impressed with the food there but we just went to some random places. One place we went to was nice.

Florence was awesome and we also went to Positano. The Amalfi Coast is amazing but it is a ton of walking and that might be too much for them at their age. Hell, I was like 32 when I went and I felt like I was gonna have a heart attack. Haha.
Was just there with the wife

Mirabelle was outstanding (not cheap) - rooftop Michelin restaurant near the park. Make sure if they go they are guaranteed a balcony table though - amazing views of the Vatican at night.

Il Convivio Troiana was also really cool and unique

Chris in philly had a really good recommendation for a simple restaurant too but I can't remember name.

Also have them take a train to Naples one day and do a driving tour of amalfi coast. Beautiful scenery and positano was really unique.

Sorrento/Positano in November, couldn't swing a vacation earlier during the high season.

Rome always gets a bad rap, along with Venice, but if you like archeology/history, it's just unbelievable.

If your parents are going by themselves, I'd imagine they'd appreciate a tour/private guide. Don't have them navigate public transportation on their own. Viators have a lot of tours, and they are generally pretty good.

Aside from the usual stuff/famous landmarks, I'd recommend visiting the catacombs outside the city.
Wife and I about to leave on the cruise tour of a lifetime,,,

starting in Rome.

Sicily, Malta, Corfu, Kotor, Dubrovnik, Korsula, Split, Koper and Venice. With lectures from world-class professors while at sea. It's done in conjunction with Scientific American. I have been tracking this tour operator for five years, waiting for the right itinerary and time of year. Itinerary linked.

I am very psyched.

my memory of the food there is that it was terrific - it does have some wonderful world class features -- like the Vatican, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Stairs and tremendously awesome historical sites -- my beef with Rome is that I just don't like big dirty cities which it certainly is --

I too much prefer Florence -- I had magical experiences there as well

I also prefer Vienna and London -- and didn't like Milan
Rick Steve's books are a must...

..Rome was so so,along with the food compared to the rest of Italy. Especially northern Italy which was incredible.. Biggest secret was the Cingue Terre along the coast...Absolutely life changing experience..
Cinque Terra, San Gimignano, Florence...

we are returning this year. They can take a train for the day to Florence which was easy and fun too. Rome had so much. Amazing gelato, pizza and pastas. A few great restaurants I'd recommend, La Scala en Trestevere, Ristorante Roma Sparita, La Pentolaccia. Loved visiting the Spanish Steps, Colisseum, Campo De Fiore, Trevi Fountain, and of courde the Vatican. Make sure they get a good tour guide for the Colisseum and Vatican. Makes all the difference in the world.
