NFT: Mets considering new "analytical" manager

pjcas18 : 9/22/2017 8:04 am
I wouldn't mind Mike Matheny himself though I think he's under contract for a few more years, but I have a feeling this will be someone controllable by the FO.

Also of note, since there was some speculation about a role change, I read Sandy will be back as Mets GM next year.

Kristie Ackert report on possible new Mets manager next season.

It's going to be Terry

Matheny
DanMetroMan : 9/22/2017 8:17 am : link
is considered the exact opposite of that. Really strange name for them to mention. In fact, Keith Law is consistently mocking him. I don't want Matheny at all (he's not going anywhere anyway). Gimme Kapler, Acta or my personal fave, Fernando Perez, local guy too. Brilliant mind and ex-player (bilingual too).

Really bizarre example for Ackert to use.
Is it definite
pjcas18 : 9/22/2017 8:20 am : link
though that Terry is not going to be back?

I read he's going to retire after the season, but haven't seen anything definite.

I'm not one who puts a lot of stock into W/L impact of managers, I've heard it's 5 games. This year that's basically the difference between a top 5 pick or not, but some years 5 games is the difference between playoffs or not.

was it Ackert who used Matheny or the Mets source? It's not clear.

The belief is they will let him leave on his own terms ie retire. They haven't approached him with a deal.
Acta
Sammo85 : 9/22/2017 8:23 am : link
Has no connections to this front office. He was a Minaya guy.

I'm not a big Acta fan either. I know he didn't have blockbuster teams in his two managerial stints but memory serves me he was roundly criticized and pretty terrible.

I think a front office refresh is needed however. But then again so is an ownership change.

Manager with no experience who can be a puppet for the front office. Lets call it an analytic choice and use a successful hire in that mold (not analytic but no experience) as an example.

Ricco was here with Acta and the FO is said to be high on him so I have to assume thats from Ricco
Matheny

I think youre missing the news in that statement... of the type Sandy will apparently consider...
Joe Girardi is available
arniefez : 9/22/2017 8:42 am : link
Yankee fans will gladly drive him across town. Position guys will get plenty of rest especially after a multi hit or multi HR day and all the pitchers will be assigned innings from 1 - 9. It will be very convenient for Met fans to know in the 3rd inning no matter the score or how effective or ineffective the starting pitcher is who will be in starting the 7th inning.

That's the only thing I can think of. Perhaps Jeff Wilpon. My guess is Ricco has a strong shot of being next GM. He's a Wilpon guy. Unfortunately I think that's a recipe for disaster.

Matheny is a La Russa disciple. Don't know how anyone would report him as an analytics guy. I'm sure he uses them a bit but he's a guy who plays a little unconventional and contrarian in managing the roster and game to game tactics and plays gut instincts on his moves in game.

Know nothing about Kevin Long that others do not but Ive never once heard him as a potential manager until now. Would be an odd choice (not saying he couldnt potentially be good, no clue, just odd beyond being a good puppet)

Guess 75% chance Ricco is the next gm. Dark horse would be Tanous who was quietly promoted before 2017 (not exactly warranted based on their drafts).

Mets made the EL top 20 list. Norris did say Oswalt received praise for his improved secondaries and that Guillorme could be a big leaguer on glove alone. Acknowledged Molina did not look "the same" this year. 2018 is make or break for him as he's not long for the 40 man if the stuff doesn't return. Mentioned Alonso as a potential top 20 prospect in the EL for 2018.

-Heyman says there is mutual interest with Todd Frazier but the Wright situation would have to be clear.

DanMetroMan : 9/22/2017 8:58 am : link
Josh Norris: Indeed, the whole system is very weak now. That's especially true considering Amed Rosario and Dom Smith have graduated. The Binghamton team was pretty light this year, but could have a standout guy in 2018 in Peter Alonso. Of course, it might also have another Florida Gator who will draw a bit of attention. #Tebow #KaChing

Wakamatsu was interviewed when they hired TC so it wouldn't be a shock.
The fact the Mets

I have the power!
So Dunn
pjcas18 : 9/22/2017 2:37 pm : link
didn't have TJ?

Several more lefties if you look in the rehab section:

Kay
Szapucki
Taylor
Huertas
Roseboom
Davis
New analytical manager would be good.

Why does Reyes play every day at 2B over Cecchini?

Collins likes veterans. I think I've developed early onset carpal tunnel syndrome from BBI rants on Terry Collins' lineup decisions over the years.

Reyes has actually been at SS almost every day until today (Rosario finally returns). Cecchini has a had a rough year. Guys like Evans might have surpassed him and that's a sad thought.

As much as I am not a fan Cabrera anymore, he is almost certainly brought back. He actually looks pretty good at 3B. If he plays stable enough defense there and can OPS+ 110-115 he's an asset.

I think we bring in one more infielder so that would leave TJ Rivera, Flores, ect. still as decent fallback options there.

Heck, maybe they even Reyes is brought back, although I hear it's a long shot.

Everyone will bitch that it's the same team but offense wasn't the problem this year until we traded everyone away.

I still like the idea of bringing in Moose for 15-18 per (Id view it sort of like a second tier Granderson signing from 4 years ago) but that's likely not happening.
Have no idea who would be a good pick for a manager
