NFT: Knicks Chat - Melo to HOU Fell Through/Sounds like no deal

Story filed to ESPN: Carmelo Anthony has expanded the list of teams with which he'd accept a trade -- including the Cleveland Cavaliers.

If this is the case and they missed out on the kyrie sweepstakes, very disappointing

Says Knicks tried to facilitate HOU deal but they just weren't able to offer any reasonable assets.

Sounds like no HOU deal is reachable.

Doesn't mean Cleveland would trade a young star like Kyrie for Carmelo.

This is good news, if true.
So he expanded it ONLY to Cleveland?
bceagle05 : 9/22/2017 9:22 pm : link
Or to a few teams, one of which is Cleveland?
apperently
Steve in Greenwich : 9/22/2017 9:23 pm : link
there is a 3rd team on the list and it is not the blazers per Berman.
If the Knicks can somehow end up
Metnut : 9/22/2017 9:23 pm : link
with the Nets pick, then Perry should win GM of the year.

They obviously blew their load on cp3, they’ve had a ton of time to get the assests needed to facilitate a trade. Not getting a 20 plus pt scorer for nothing. And that should go for any team.

After Marbury & Anthony you want Irving? Another guy who only cares about being the franchise and plays no defense. No wonder Dolan doesn't have to worry about ticket sales. If Perry can get something back for Anthony that complements Porzingis & Wille he's a genius. But probably the best thing he can do is force Anthony to opt out after this year and bank the cap money.

Yea why would any knicks fan not want a top 5 player at his position in his prime. Let me guess kyrie is a bum all of a sudden.
The Knicks were NEVER
Big Rick in FL : 9/22/2017 10:10 pm : link
Getting Kyrie. It didn't matter if Cleveland was on Melo's original list of teams or not. They got a stud PG, solid role player and most likely the #1 overall pick in the draft for Kyrie.

The only thing we can hope is that LeBron wants one of his best friends and a veteran player so bad that the Cavs are willing to give us the Nets pick. Highly unlikely, but that would be phenomenal.

I already have extremely low expectations for a Melo trade. We just basically need him gone. Otherwise we will be a bad team, but not bad enough where we have a legit shot at the #1 overall pick. If we keep Melo most likely we are going to end up with a pick right around 7.

Cleveland also traded to its only rival in the east.

We may have to wait to get him. They can fill the cap problem with Korver and Frye and throw in a future pick.

way too fixated on getting a soon to be free agent midget point guard with a degenerative hip, a 3 and D role player, and a pick that might end up in the 5-10 range. The Knicks just couldn't compete with assets like that.

that as we got closer to camp, Melo's one team list would magically start to expand. We've gone from 1 team to 3 teams and there's still a few more days until camp. Keep waiting...

Okc
The okc trade is a no brainer for both teams
GMEN46 : 9/22/2017 11:14 pm : link
I talked about on here the other day. If Knicks don't want kanter out of fear of him opting in then trade him to Milwaukee in 3 way deal for Monroe expiring. Something like this gets it done:

Okc gets - Melo, lance thomas and oquinn

Knicks get - kanter, grant, McDermott, abrines, ferguson and future first.

If they don't want kanter send him to Milwaukee for Monroe, Bucks would love to rid themselves of Monroe.

Okc competes with golden state with that starting team, will have to figure out some SG, PG depth to fill out roster.

PG - Westbrook/Felton
SG - George
SF - Roberson/Lance Thomas/Patterson/Singler
PF- Melo/patterson/Oquinn
C - Adams/Oquinn

Small in the radar note about this deal is abrines for Thomas is great for Knicks because one last year on contract. Knicks then need to get rid of Lee

Successful Trade - ( New Window )
Yeah, OKC has always made a ton of sense.
bceagle05 : 9/22/2017 11:44 pm : link
I bet that's where he ends up. They can easily top anything Houston or Cleveland can offer, and the Knicks obviously want to move him. Scott Perry is doing some work.
Knicks open the season at OKC, too.

+1. Kanter was unplayable in the playoffs because he cant defend vs movement. Which is kind of important.
James no on is giving
GMEN46 : 9/23/2017 6:46 am : link
Up anything of significant value. They are aware of how desperate Knicks are to get rid of him, why would you give up a lot? However OKC deal above does a number of positive things, gets Melo off the books for this year and next year, current young guys get to develop, gets rid of Lance thomas deal, gives you a couple of decent young pieces, Grant, McDermott, ferguson and a 2024 first Rd pick. Grant and McDermott are not super stars but they can play key roles on a team Mcdermont being the lethal shooter off the bench and grant being an athletic defender off the bench. These types of players are needed. Ferguson is a tbd but def has some potential upside. Additionally mcdermont can be used as trade bait at the deadline. Knicks need one more lottery year because draft is so loaded up top.

If Knicks can find a taker for lee they will be in full tank mode with only Noah and kanters bad contracts. However kanter probably opts out next year. Knicks could get the top 5 pick this year and be loaded with young talent going into 2019 season, they have to find away to unload Noah contract before 2020 free agency so they have max cap space available to sign free agents and then be able to go over the cap to sign porzingis and willy.

Obviously Portland can offer better talent and picks but it will require us taking on a bad contract of at least 3 years. I guess harkless is ok but to get Collins, swanigan or multiple picks Knicks will pronanly have to take on Turner or Myers contract, plus convince Melo to go to a place that is the furthest possible place to fly from NYC in the NBA
Who care about kanter
GMEN46 : 9/23/2017 6:48 am : link
As a player, we only care about the length of his contract. He allows the tank to continue and frees up the cap space. His bad defense is actually a positive because it will only help Knicks get a higher lottery pick.

Couldn’t they then do the same with Houston a take one of their dumps? You get value for Melo or let him sit. Aka picks or some haul
Trades Knicks should accept if offered

how can you say there is no hope?

Knicks are finally building the right way, they have a young star, they willy and thjr who are good young pieces, frank who could develop into a nice piece and all of their first round picks...

how is there no hope?
Willy is a nice 6-7 guy on a good team.
GiantsUA : 9/23/2017 9:58 am : link
thjr- I seem to remember him on the Knicks a couple of years ago - undersized, unsure and came up small in big moments, not excited about having him back.

I don't know about Frank, we will see.

I am hope I am wrong,
GiantsUA : 9/23/2017 10:02 am : link
I see the Knicks as 3-4 players away from being a threat in the east.

Well, he was a rookie. Not that I'm on anyone's bandwagon.
Hardaway is not undersized...
Italianju : 9/23/2017 10:20 am : link
but its hard to argue with the rest. That said we hopefully arent getting the player from a couple years ago. All reports are that he has improved his game.

Glad melo opened the list, this should allow us to get a deal done that at least has some value to us. Plus it now causes teams to at least have to think they are bidding against another team.

I'm shocked Courtney Lee is still here.
bceagle05 : 9/23/2017 10:56 am : link
If another young wing is coming back as part of a Melo package, we should really find a taker for Lee and let the young guys play. He came here to win, not to babysit during a rebuild, and he still has some value around the league.
You know the Knicks are gonna screw this up

The only thing we know for certain is Melo wants a trade, what the Knicks want is up for debate. They pull out of trade talks, dick around the office, engage in office paper clip wars.

And there ones who should want this to happen the most.
Well, I'm encouraged that Melo expanded his list at all.
bceagle05 : 9/23/2017 11:10 am : link
It means we refuse to take Houston's garbage, or any other team's comparable garbage. So far we're holding steady on some combo of youth, short contracts and draft picks. Call me crazy but I think this will turn out SLIGHTLY better than expected, which isn't saying much.

Pulling out of trade talks was the first smart thing the Knicks have done in years. Why should the Knicks want this to happen the most?

Carrying a grumpy Melo until the trade deadline or the end of the season is a better option than trading him for more shitty contracts.
Who carries unhappy players on there roster for half a season
