If the Giants lose and the offensive line shits the bed again and the play calling is as unimaginative as in the previous two games and they go three and out on their first drive and Eli is sacked a number of times while the defense continues to bust a gut to try and keep the dam from breaking as the offense tip toes into the game rather coming out with fire and brimstone as most assuredly the Eagles will can we all agree after watching this team since McAdoo has taken over he is in over his head.
I don't want to put the cart before the horse but sometimes the harder you try the worse things get. I want them to win more then anything Sunday and right the ship because there is too much talent on this team for the season to go down in flames. And so soon. But this game almost looks to be unwinable. Not that the Eagles are head and shoulders better it's just the Giants rank last in offense and that puts all the onus on an already overworked defense defense.
However, when you least expect it the unimaginable happens. Somehow I don't get that feeling. So, once again, if they lose in a manor that is all too familiar on Sunday and they look out schemed, and McAdoo looks overmatched what will the headlines say about his coaching abilities then. His inability to adjust. His offense has been bad for too long. Is he Ray Handley redux. If they continue to lose what does ownership do. They put this team right in his lap as they unceremoniously asked Tom to retire rather then fire him. Some say the game passed him by. Somehow McAdoo looks like he never caught up.
Strange thing last year Cincinnati game, the Giants completely switched up how they ran the O and the team looked good. But it was a one week anomly. Does anyone know if someone else gameplanned that for the Giants?
Not doing so for weeks on end and watching the same failures over and over shows:
- a lack of imagination and skill by the coaches and/or
- a lack of talent on the team
In the first case Mcadoo and possibly Reese is at fault while in the second it is clearly Reese.
OBJ is a given. And then what? Eli is a good quarterback, but no longer the player he was. I think it is hard to argue he is top 10 or top 15 anymore. We know there simply is no talent on the offensive line, full stop. We don't have a running back that would get significant snaps on any other team. Some here believe Darkwa is about to break out, but I am not sure what that is based on. Brandon Marshall is not what he was by any stretch of the imagination, and Shepherd has so far shown only that he is a serviceable complementary player. Engram may be a star soon but he is a rookie and still learning the game, and his snaps are limited while he learns to become a more complete player.
There is a good amount of talent on defense, but offensively, part of the problem is what it was last year. If you take away OBJ, the Giants just don't have second and third options that present match up problems.
Agreed and their defensive talent for the most part was purchased. So why does Reese still have a job?

you hit the nail on the head. If you took all the NFL teams and looked at running back and OL personnel, how many teams have less talent?

Well to be fair, Reese did purchase that talent.

To be fair, why did he have to purchase that talent? Is it because his drafting has been sub-par? Clint Sintim? Double O? Damontre Moore? Marvin Austin?
Nothing changes, Mac sits there with that smug look on his face, blames Eli and praises Flowers
Indeed, Reese deserves credit for signing the FA class. But I've said it before, he gets more credit than he deserves. Look Jackrabbit, Snacks, and OV were the top rated FAs at their position. It is rather easy to dump some cash on a player who sits at the top of the list. If you are shopping for Filet Mignon, it is easy to go to that section and pick a cut. But show me the FAs that Reese has signed where that Filet was found in the stew meat section. That would deserve praise.
Yeah, tell that to Dan Snyder.
Two, he has a head coach who thanks to his defense went 11-5. The offense was terrible and everyone thought this year it couldn't get any worse. It could only get better. I for one cannot believe with two number ones and a two on that line and the likes of a Beckham, Engram, Shepard, and a veteran in Marshall he can't figure out how to get the most out of these guys.
If this season goes down in flames I as a diehard lifelong fan hope the Giants do something they rarely do so quickly. Fire McAdoo before the talent on this team dries up. They did so with Ray Handley because that was just so bizarre after a while. But man oh man this offense is Richie Kotite bad. And for those of you who remember him you know what I'm talking about.
Not Eli's fault, although he could be making a few more plays. It's just that an immobile QB is an easy target when every other snap results in a jailbreak.
If Eli can't scramble, do they have to stand him still in the shotgun so the rushers can close in on an easy target. I know in the past that they have had Eli take the snap from under the center and immediately roll out.
They have Gino who might get the crowd going for a while, but he's pretty much proven that he can't close a deal. Here comes an interception.
Anyway, who would dare bench Eli.
A running back with speed and elusiveness. Like say for instance Darren Sproles. The Giants would have passed on him because of his age. The Eagles didn't.
Running backs over 30 aren't valued much, yet many are better than ours. We don't even have a RB who can turn the corner, allowing the defense to stuff the middle even more.
This was all so foreseeable, but no contingency plans if the pass protection and running game sucked again.

A mobile QB doesn't solve the problem. How good has Russell Wilson looked behind a shitty OL?
We aren't exactly talking the spark of genius here, and it isn't like a lot of other GM's couldn't have done the same thing if handed the owners' checkbook. Most GM's who find themselves in a position where that kind of cash outlay is necessary to fix one side of the ball are watching their replacements do it.
Blah blah blah coaching ... Albert Einstein couldn't "scheme" a way out of this ... The OL is pathetic - Eli can't move - and the run game in non existent
Our only hope tomorrow is Odell taking multiple slants 50+ yards for TDs against their weak CBs
The O isn't that bad from a talent perspective. I'm fearing that at the end of this season we see both Richburg and Pugh walk into greener pastures and turn out to be much better players than we've seen from them. Shepard is a good slot receiver even if he isn't a great one, and OBJ is a generational talent. Eli might not be as good as he was, but he's certainly no worse than middle of the pack. And although he looks like he's taken a bad step backward, Paul Perkins came in highly lauded and had a very good rookie season.

If you are going to accurately evaluate someone, you have to look at both sides of the equation. There are a lot of draft misses that lead to the spend on D and that is a negative on Resse and his group. But he also fixed the problem in one offseason through FA which many other teams have tried and failed at. You have to acknowledge that as a positive instead of just looking back at the facts that support your chosen conclusion.
Pretty low bar. The owners gave him almost a quarter of a billion dollars to go throw at the top 4 free agents and he made all of them top 5 highly paid at their positions.

This isn't fair at all. Reese definitely deserves blame for the offense but he deserves some credit for the defense.
Plenty of teams have money every year but still can't get the type of turnaround the Giants experienced on defense from 15 to 16.
None of the high profile FAs signed that year were slam dunks. The Jets let Snacks hit FA. The Rams went with Johnson (the other CB) and let Jenkins walk. People were torn on extending JPP. MIA let Vernon hit the market and fans were torn on him as well. Any and all of those moves could've turned out poorly. They haven't so far.

It all starts with the OL

One, OBj is not 100%....that is not going to happen.....
Two, if this offense comes out in the same scheme as the last two games, there is nothing to make that defense guess what is happening...Eli will face 7 back there....The Eagles will stunt all over our OL, except against our LT, which isn't necessary.....
Three, I don't care how weak their secondary is, if Eli doesn't have the time, your grandmother can cover Marshall...

Exactly
They are just as predictable as they think MacAdoo s offense is.
Vernon was a mistake. Great kid. But his contract is not worth his actual value. It they spent half as much on FA for the OL maybe it wouldn't be the worst unit every year in the whole NFL
