NFT: Yankees vs Blue Jays

section125 : 9/23/2017 5:05 pm
After the shit show yesterday and nobody starting a game thread, thought one might be appropriate.

Biagini vs Gray.

Gray just gave up a homer to Hernandez, who had 2 coming into the series and now has 4. No cheapie either.

Yankees continue to not be able to hit garbage pitchers.

Top 4th Jays 1-0......
They never score

How things change so fast
Stan in LA : 9/23/2017 8:21 pm : link
2 years ago the Mets had the 5 Aces, were in the World Series(BTW, one they should have won), and a bright future("It's a Met's Town!!") while the Yanks were broken down old, aging team with a middling farm system.

Now, the Mets' aces are broken down, their farm system is barren and they are one of the worst teams in baseball while the Yanks have a team full of young stars (and more on the way) one of the top farm systems in baseball, in the playoffs and are about to go on another long run of dominance.

Who'd thunk?

though I share your sentiment, things can change fast either way. Let's get past the WC game first then start talking about long runs of dominance.

I take no joy in the misfortune of the Mets or their fans, but with the complete and total shitshow their ownership is, it is not surprising in any way that they can't sustain success.

I guess I understand celebrating now - making the playoffs at all is big. But for me clinching the home field for the WC game is at least as big.

I don't either. But don't think for one single second that the Mets fans on BBI wouldn't be relishing in the fact if the roles were reveresed.
Making the playoffs this year is a great accomplishment
arniefez : 9/23/2017 11:27 pm : link
winning 90 games would be a great accomplishment and winning the wild card game would be a great accomplishment. Anything less would be a disappointment. Regardless what happens for the rest of 2017 the future is bright but in no way guaranteed.
It's not like the Yankees have an All-Star at every position...
Milton : 9/24/2017 12:11 am : link
But when you consider up-and-comers Torres, Frazier, Andujar, and Florial, youngsters Judge, Sanchez, Bird, and Torreyes, veterans Castro, Didi, and Hicks, and seasoned vets Gardner, Headley, and Ellsbury; it's a solid lineup good enough to win a World Series. And despite it's ups and downs, you gotta be happy with their bullpen going forward (Green, Shreve, Kahnle, Robertson, Betances, Chapman).

Where they fall short is with the starting pitching. Gray, Tanaka (if he returns), Montgomery, and Chance Adams are solid in the 3-4-5 roles, but they need another guy at the top of the rotation to go along with Severino. Just one more starter who can post a sub 3.00 ERA with a WHIPS in the 1.00 range.

Add that one ingredient and you're talking about a team that will be going deep into the playoffs every year for the next five or ten years. Maybe one of their long line of young flame throwers will emerge from the farm or maybe they will pick him in free agency.

all star at every position either, but they didn't have any black holes. Tino lead the team with 28 HRs, and they had something like 3 other guys with 20 or more. It was a great fielding team - Knoblach didn't crash yet.

I actually heard a few weeks ago that the record for home teams in the one game playoff is pretty damn bad. Don't know what it is though...

Milton...If you think Gray is at best a #3, then you're not giving him the credit he deserves.

Gray has the 6th best ERA in the AL (3.31) and the 7th best WHIP (1.17). That's good enough to be a #1 on a lot of teams and a #2 on just about ALL MLB teams.

Also your standards for a "top of the rotation" pitcher are way too high.

You say the Yanks need "just one more starter who can post a sub 3.00 ERA" and a "WHIP in the 1.00 range". Well there were only two pitchers in the league that met those standards this year (Kluber and Sale) and only three pitchers in the no DH league (Kershaw, Scherzer and Strasburg) who did so.

Which one of those 5 starters do you think will be available for the Yanks to put at the top of their order?
