Worthwhile wondering what Tommie Smith and John Carlos make of the current protest circus initiated last year by Colin Kaepernick and recently converted into a major issue of the day between our president and superstar athletes.
All three medalists in the 1968 200 meters were banished/shunned as was a Czech gymnast for a separate silent protest.
Protests are still condemned by many -- but not with the kind of punishment given in 1968.
Irrelevant aside: Dan Hanley served as chief physician at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. He set my broken nose from coming down face first on the diving board from a mis-judged back jackknife in my freshman year at Bowdoin.

Are people kneeling during plays or refusing to catch footballs? Somehow, that statement doesn't seem accurate.
Turn on FOX. It's approaching unavoidable territory.
Eric, political discussions should be limited to CNN or Fox not here. Thanks you for your stand on this matter.
horseshit thats going on everywhere .
Keep the political out of the conversation period its bad enough you can't say boo without offending some weak minded shill . Keep it to Football pretty simple
"This guy is an a-hole."
But, after that (the first game) - he started taking a knee.
IMHO, taking a knee shows more reverence to something than standing there with your hand over your heart. Taking a knee is something a lot of people do in church at the most important parts of the Mass.
When he started taking a knee - my opinion changed. I support his right to express himself during the Anthem in a way that does not come off as disrespectful (imo). All he SEEMS to be saying is
"I am going to respect and honor the Flag but, because of the injustice that I perceive going on around the Country, I am going to express myself in this way."
Maybe, I am missing something but, taking a knee does bother me. Sitting on the bench bothered me.
One last thing ... why doesn't the NFL (and other sports for that matter) just get rid of that tradition anyway. I am not sure when it got started or why it is soooo important to have the National Anthem performed before a sporting event?
No it's not. Plenty of games to talk about this weekend.

Top minds of BBI here, between bluesbreaker and giant24
And then we'll be treated to more articles asking, "duh, doh, why are ratings continuing to fall"?
Time to make a basement if that's what has to be done

It literally doesn't affect the game in any way. There's no suspensions, no retirements, no protests that affect play in any way.
Relevant for discussion? Maybe. Related to actual football, and not political statements being made? Hardly.
And if people cared enough to vote with their pockets, wouldn't Hollywood also be suffering? Not like they're exactly balanced with their political affiliations.
Athletes in protest ------> political comments ------> happy birthday wishes
It's a slippery slope, but fuckin snowflakes man, what can ya do?
It's become the topic of the day and I did my best to keep it low key and non-political.
Isn't the connection to the Mexico City games compelling?
