Special Teams Coordinator Tom Quinn

Q: What’s going on with P Brad Wing’s punting?

A: Last week, he had one bad punt and it was a poor angle – off the side of his foot 28 yards. But, I liked the plus area punts that he had. He had two of those and they were to the 10 and 8 yard line. That’s exactly what we want. And then he had the one field punt, which was good to the right. So, we just have to – I think it’s one a game and we have to eliminate that one a game.

Q: What can lead to P Brad Wing’s inconsistency?

A: We just have to focus on the details. Make sure the alignment is right and that’s what it was with the Philly punt, so, that’s what we’re looking to improve.

Q: K Aldrick Rosas was good last week when it came to pressure kicks and kickoffs. Can you talk about his growth?

A: He listens really well and he tries to get better every day. He’s coachable and he’s really talented. So, you put those together and he works at it. So, he’s done well so far.

Q: Talk more about how nothing seems to bother Aldrick Rosas.

A: You see guys that are confident like that. But, yeah. He’s kind of free and easy right now, so it’s been good to work with.

Q: What are you seeing in the return game?

A: I thought the punt return blocking got better. The guy did really a good job with the hang to distance, so it’s hard to get stuff going. I thought the blocking did improve. There’s nothing to show for it. So, keep working. Kickoff return – we have to get better. It’s a big point of emphasis this week being more physical on our blocks. So, hopefully we can see the result Sunday.

Q: What happened on WR Dwayne Harris’ penalty?

A: He moved his hand and anytime you do that – you can move it out in front of you. You need two hands to get the coverage off or to tell all of our guys that it’s a miss-it punt. But, once you bring it up around the shoulder, that’s an illegal fair catch and it was the call.

Q: What the illegal fair catch an accident on WR Dwayne Harris’ part?

A: Yeah because he doesn’t remember doing it, so I think he was just trying to center himself on it and not trying to do that because usually when he calls a fair catch, he’s up with it early and gets it out. I’ve been seeing him do that since he’s been here.

Q: Is WR Dwayne Harris making better decisions now?

A: I think he’s catching the ball better and yeah, not pressing. Some of those punts are hard. You want to return it, but you have a time clock in your head. Once that alarm goes off, you have to throw up a fair catch.

Q: Talk about P Brad Wing and his punting.

A: He’s competitive. We just want to make sure we channel it the right way. He’s great to work with but we have to channel it. As a specialist, you can’t go out there and hit somebody, so you have to make sure you get your focus and your targets and everything else along those lines.

Q: So, you’re saying that it’s not like P Brad Wing can go out and hit the ball harder?

A: No. That doesn’t work. We’re not golf. You just have to stay within yourself and not press.

Q: You said it was the stride on the punt in the fourth quarter of the game in Philadelphia?

A: Yeah. You know the angle and the stride. So, that kind of – you’ve seen that before from directional punters. That angle is a little too sharp, which it was. Unfortunate time for it to happen, obviously. But, keep competing.

Q: Do you worry about P Brad Wing getting too down on himself?

A: No. He’s always been like that. I mean, he’s competitive. He’s into it. He gets football. He wants to be a good teammate, wants to help. I’d rather have a guy like that than a guy who really doesn’t understand the game, is just kind of out there doing his own thing. So, he’s a competitive, competitive player which is nice to have.

Q: P Brad Wing is a specialist, but he still cares about the entire team.

A: You want him to be a part of the team. They’re part of the team, so they’re doing a good job with that.

I just want someone to ask Quinn who he has dirt on
