Listen we had nothing coming to us tonight

their pitching was insane but the HP Ump and that fat slob down at 3rd sealed the deal.

I like our pitching matchups at the Stadium and there's no need to concede tomorrow either.
That turd umpiring third should take a long walk off a short pier

Two HORRID calls on check swings and they both went against the Yankees. And didn't he love putting on a show of it, too. Asshole.

He was literally unwrapping his gum when he made one of those calls. He wasn't even paying attention.

Headley, their pinch hitting options with Bird vs a lefty are pretty limited, unless they are comfortable with Holiday at 1B.

Put Torreyes at third and Frazier at first then.

Wouldn't you just move Headley to 1B?

If you put the DH in the field, you lose the DH spot and the pitcher has to hit.

Thanks, I didn't know that.
So once you declare your DH you can't use him in the field during the game unless you want to allow the pitcher to hit. Learn something new everyday.

by the zone but Bauer looked great tonight independently. The Indians outplayed the Yankees (thus far). There's a reason that they had the best record in the AL-- they are damn good.

True but if the ump calls it fairly Bauer will make a mistake or two that gets hit because he isn't any good (like Kluber, Carrasco)

You can think that if it makes you feel better, but it's nothing more than extremely wishful thinking.

Bauer was on fire tonight. He faced 23 batters. Even if you were you say that all 8 of his strikeouts were because of unfair umpiring, he still only gave up 2 hits and a walk in the remaining 15 at-bats-- and not all 8 of his strikeouts were bogus.
Bauer's been pretty hot since the All-Star break
jcn56 : 10/6/2017 12:27 am : link
factor in the first road playoff game for a lot of these guys, against a team that's been red hot... I thought they acquitted themselves well. Nobody thought this was going to be easy.
I think Bauer definitely benefited from 2 factors
mfsd : 10/6/2017 5:41 am : link
The ump subconsciously giving him some borderline calls bc he was “around” the plate...and the pressure of the home crowd on the umps. I think home field does play a factor with umps calls a bit, when the crowd is amped like that in a playoff game

But no way the Yanks can use that as an excuse. They showed no ability to hit his big curveball consistently. As annoying as he looks (Bauer looks like the teenager hanging out smoking cigarettes and trying to look tough in front of the Wawa somewhere in Jersey when you stop for gas)...sometimes you have to tip your cap.

Indians had a clear plan in mind against guys like Judge, Sanchez et al - start their guy with the big curveball, and have him throw 75% curveballs. Last night it worked.
judge is going to face nothing but breaking balls this series
micky : 10/6/2017 6:32 am : link
needs to learn to hit them.

tough start. CC it's all on your shoulders now
Bauer got a few borderline
section125 : 10/6/2017 7:13 am : link
calls and all but two were likely strikes. Tip the cap.

Sonny Gray needs to throw more strikes early in the count. He cannot keep getting behind in the count and then need to come in. How many 3-2 counts did he have and how many times was he behind in the count 3-0, or 2-0? Cannot do that against a great hitting team. As a similar pitcher, he has better velocity than Jimmy Key and Mike Mussina but he does not control his pitches like they did. He has the stuff, but he wastes far too many pitches.

On to game two.

That's a very generous interpretation. I wouldn't have complained about those strikes to Judge, Didi, and Headley at all if Gray/Warren/Garcia had gotten some/any of those calls too. When does Aaron Judge ever say anything to a HP ump? Joe visibly said, "You're having a bad game" to the HP ump. I'd say that was far less frustration than just an accurate observation.

One thing our pitchers must a better job of is holding runners, especially if they're going to be throwing so many pitches in the dirt. Ramirez sprinting around the bases on 2 wild pitches was in large part due to the humongous starting and secondary leads he got. Unless the balls are caught cleanly out of the dirt, there's literally no chance of throwing him out. I think that's a strategy CLE probably uses with their better base-runners.
Listen there is no team that can hit the breaking balls Bauer
Stu11 : 10/6/2017 8:37 am : link
was throwing. Most of them were breaking about 3 feet and ending up at the knees or just below. Your only hope there is to match 0's and hope to take advantage of one of the few he hung(like the fastball Frazier jumped on and pulled just foul). Yes we got a shit zone at times and I agree that when you are the home pitcher in front of an amped up playoff crowd you will get some generous strike calls. We just have to try and match their SP and hope that somehow some way they come back to earth a bit. What was lost in their winning streak was how damn dominant their SP was. The A's streak years back was pure pixie dust. Miguel Tejada had like 5 walk off hits. This Indians team didn't need that. They simply dominated from start to finish most games. I have faith in the big fella. He'll get it done tonight. Hopefully we hit a bit.
At least we can enjoy a little schadenfreude
mfsd : 10/6/2017 8:47 am : link
at the expense of Sale and the Sox. Gave up 7 runs on 9 hits in 5 innings. Way to go Ace!
It is very frustrating..
FatMan in Charlotte : 10/6/2017 8:53 am : link
to watch the strike zone they have applied to Judge. He consistently has pitches at his armpits called strikes and they call ones below his knees as well. He pretty much has to swing to protect the plate, and even with that, his walk rate is damn impressive.

For some reason, the high strike has been called consistently on Yanks this year without having the same zone for the opponent. DiDi, Judge and Headley often get the high strike called.

Like Stu said above - the strike zone isn't why they lost, but as a fan it is damn frustrating.
Gray is not an ace, he's a mid rotation guy. I think this description
Victor in CT : 10/6/2017 9:06 am : link
from SI below is perfect. I know they gave up guys who were hurt except for Mateo, but if Kaprelian turns into a stud the deal is a steal for Oakland:

"The Yankees may have thought in landing Gray at the deadline that they were getting a top-tier starter—just two years ago, he finished third in the running for the Cy Young. But while he posted a 3.72 ERA in his 11 regular-season starts as a Yankee, he walked nearly 10 percent of the batters he faced and went more than six innings just three times. These days, he’s a fine pitcher, not an excellent one. He didn’t excel Wednesday night, either, and it’s hard to think the Yankees will be excited to see him back on the hill in Cleveland for a Game 5, should things get that far."
Kaprielian has been a pro for three years now

Also, the worst of the umpiring wasn't behind the plate
Greg from LI : 10/6/2017 9:18 am : link
It was the sonofabitch at third base blowing those two check-swing calls, especially the Bruce call. That one was one of the worst calls I've ever seen. I didn't notice it myself, but I believe B when he said the guy was unwrapping his gum instead of watching the play because there's no way someone who was paying attention says that Bruce didn't go around there. It didn't cost them since Garcia struck him out anyway, but good lord.

Poll time - if the Yanks manage to stay alive, Garcia gets a start over Gray, yes or no? I'm leaning towards yes.....I believe in Gray long term, but he just doesn't have it right now. I don't know if something is physically wrong with him or what, but he's had three bad starts in a row now.
I say no.
bigbluehoya : 10/6/2017 9:21 am : link
If you battle to game 5, I'm throwing Gray back out there.

I wish I could say it was a crazy question, but unfortunately it isn't.

And Dellin looked like Dellin again. Despite the fact that it was an almost certain loss at that point, I got almost giddy watching him carve them up. It's been unbearable watching him struggle when I know how untouchable he can be when he's on.

If Bruce connected that ball may have left the yard.
Doesn't really matter who you start for Game 5 though, does it?
jcn56 : 10/6/2017 9:32 am : link
It would be an elimination game, the quick hook basically means that the toss up gets flip-flopped if the starter struggles.
I'm not a huge Garcia fan, but I don't believe in Gray.
Victor in CT : 10/6/2017 9:33 am : link
Garcia might be a good matchup vs. the fastball hitters on CLE. Montgomery might too, but I don't think Girardi would go there.

As a side note, I would like to see Severino tonight, then come back with CC and Tanaka at home.
I wanted Severino in game 2 too
Greg from LI : 10/6/2017 9:35 am : link
Ace vs. ace, and I have more confidence in Sevy on the road after watching him overthrowing like a mother in the wild card game. Figure he'd be more controlled on the road.

But it's not happening.
Depending on what the pen would look like going into a game 5
Stu11 : 10/6/2017 9:37 am : link
I'd start CC. Lefties seem to give the Indians some more problems, and I trust his vet experience.
I'd have started Sevi tonight too, or at the very least Sunday
Stu11 : 10/6/2017 9:38 am : link
No way I'd risk never getting to use him.
The thing with Sevi that I thought was that in addtion to being too
Victor in CT : 10/6/2017 9:41 am : link
amped up, he was too strong on 6 days rest. Now he's going to start on Sunday having pitched just 1/3 of an inning, about 35 pitches, in 11 days. He going to be super strong and pumped by Sunday
and let's all say a little prayer that Kluber doesn't get...
Greg from LI : 10/6/2017 9:44 am : link
...the Eric Gregg Memorial Strike Zone the way Bauer did. Beating Kluber is hard enough with a legit strike zone. If he's gonna get that many pitches off the plate too, they might as well stay at their hotel.

I don't understand our coaches
Jeever : 10/6/2017 10:10 am : link
I didn't see all 3 hits but 2 went to the opposite field. When facing a breaking ball pitcher you need to think back up the middle or the other way. If you try to pull everything you'll beat it in the ground or pop it up. Going to be the same issue with Kluber. Let the ball travel and take it the other way.

And for Sonny Gray, if he's going to be that wild with most of his pitches he'll never get the call on the close ones. They all need to challenge the hitters and if the get beat so be it. This constant nibbling on the corners and missing by a mile leading to 3-2 counts all day long will never get the job done.

LG in NYC : 10/6/2017 10:47 am : link
assuming you believe in the little box they put up on the screen, the ump didn't miss that many.

people here are acting like the Yanks got royally screwed last night. They got beat by a better team - big difference.

LG in NYC : 10/6/2017 10:55 am : link
I tried - can't figure out what that is supposed to tell me.

this is about calls Umps "typically" make acc to the site. I asked about the box on last nights broadcast... acc to that, the ump didn't go off course all that often.
It's a map of all the calls last night
Greg from LI : 10/6/2017 11:00 am : link
The little boxes are Cleveland's pitches, the triangles are the Yankees. Red is a strike, green is a ball. By the maps, Cleveland got about 8 pitches off the plate called strikes. Yankees got one. There were also four Yankee pitches entirely in the strike zone called balls, none for Cleveland.

Bottom line - Cleveland pitchers got friendlier calls by a good bit. Doesn't mean the Yankees played well, because they didn't, but the umps did them no favors either.

So according to that only 1-2 balls were called strikes and they were extremely borderline, correct?
ok - thanks
LG in NYC : 10/6/2017 11:07 am : link
but does the box on that site match the box that Fox shows on their screen?

I am only asking b/c I really do not recall seeing that many bad calls watching it last night - though admittedly I started doing other things after the 7th - and in fact, found it interesting how often the Ump got it right according to the box on screen
(i.e., close pitch outside the box, called a ball and the crowd groaned loudly wanting the strike)... I saw that quite often.
