Is Eli Apple losing ground on the depth chart?

Sy'56 : 10/9/2017 3:10 pm
I haven't been able to track anything down, and as I re-watch the game tape for the review, I am noticing he didn't start. He was on the field for 80% of the plays...was there information put out there on that?

He was purposely benched for a few series early on.
Devon : 10/9/2017 3:11 pm : link
There's been some coverage of him complaining about it and how he was feeling singled out this morning.
This sums it up

Not gonna pretend I'm a draft scout

But I hated that pick since day 1
He was primed for a good year

Looked sensational in preseason before the ankle injuries. He doesn't look right, he looks a step slow and doesn't have the technique to falll back on.

That said, he is not playing well, and needs to know it.
He's a raw but talented player
Keaton028 : 10/9/2017 3:45 pm : link
in his second year. He was always going to have his struggles. Corey Webster was another talented player who struggled early on. Let's give Apple time to develop. He is a young guy who is frustrated now, and needs coaches who believe in him.
Do the Giants interview these guys before they draft them
ghost718 : 10/9/2017 3:46 pm : link
Or do they just use the "His name is Eli and he's from Jersey, that's good enough for me" philosophy.
So

You don't think Apple has shown promise at all?
Let's

draft Secondary depth with top picks! -

say Apple was the right pick with Tunsil still on the board, however CB is a position that you always want to restock talent. Mediocre corners in this league can sink a team. I don't think the philosophy is wrong.
Apple was solid his rookie year.
compton : 10/9/2017 4:36 pm : link
He has had a couple of bad moments (like most young DB) this year but I think BBI is overcritical of his play this year. The defense is not consistently pressuring the opposing QB and that will expose any defensive back.
I don't know what's worse
Gman11 : 10/9/2017 5:19 pm : link
Watching him play or reading his comments.

"Yeah, so I had 5 pass interference calls against me. I don't worry about it. Those 3 TDs against me were just lucky plays by the WR."
He's been awful
Marty866b : 10/9/2017 5:32 pm : link
How can anyone think differently? He cannot cover anyone "clean"in man to man coverage. This team should be playing more zone in the secondary. Our poor man to man coverage is the primary reason why we don't get off the field on 3rd and long situations. Spags usually blitzes because our front four can't rush the passer for shit and then plays man defense. This defense hasn't worked all year.
Apple has struggled this year
LakeGeorgeGiant : 10/9/2017 5:34 pm : link
but showed promise last year. The jury is still out but he has the physical tools.

Honestly, Apple is pretty far down my list of concerns at the moment.
He had unreal measurables
Blue Moon : 10/9/2017 5:53 pm : link
And freakish skills according to the Empty Suit GM. As did all his draft picks post draft.
I'm not high on Reese either
LakeGeorgeGiant : 10/9/2017 5:56 pm : link
but Apple certainly had the measurables. The thing with measurables is that you measure them; there is nothing subjective there.
The Apple pick was terrible
Thunderstruck27 : 10/9/2017 6:18 pm : link
a lot of people tried to justify it by talking about his speed and size and that he could be "coached". He obviously can't be. He grabs and doesn't look at the ball. He's a bust.
Reese
AcidTest : 10/9/2017 6:52 pm : link
was in a difficult situation that year because of how badly Tunsil messed up the draft. Tennessee and Chicago traded up ahead of us to get Conklin and Floyd. I don't know what Reese was offered, but it likely wasn't enough to get him to move down.

Apple also had the size to potentially play on the outside against big WRs. Hargreaves didn't. There were rumors that Tampa Bay in fact would have taken Apple.

The problem is that Apple still has the same ball location problems that were well known before he was drafted. It was Reese's job to ensure that those problems were correctable, especially for a top 10 pick.
What was this of him laughing during the game?
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 10/9/2017 6:54 pm : link
I saw some posters mention it, but didn't catch it.
McAdoo and Eli both discussed it...
Dan in the Springs : 10/9/2017 7:03 pm : link
he was benched for the first three series of the game. According to McAdoo, it was something they planned on earlier in the week. Apple didn't like it and spoke out about how there are many problems, not just his play.

Here's the quote from McAdoo's Post-game presser.

Quote:
Q: You had CB Eli Apple on the bench for three series, what was your thinking there?

A: We have a lot of guys who were rolling in and out of there. We want to see guys compete, and we’re confident in all our DBs.

and later...

Quote:
Q: Was CB Eli Apple on the bench for three series pre-planned?

A: Yes.

Q: Exactly three series?

A: It was pre-planned.

So I guess the answer to your question is yes, Eli has lost ground on the depth chart.

Fans have no patience. It's 5 games into his second season.

I remember you guys calling Collins a bust his rookie year. Most fans are blithering idiots.

I sat next to an imbecile during a Ram game at Gients Stadium who told me Mark Haynes was a bum. Then another who trashed Mark Collins. A third who was all over Sehorn . Do you really want to write this guy off?

Look, I cannot comment with certainty on every position on the field. IE, I have a fan level opinion of the OL and the DL. However, I have a high level of expertise in the defensive backfield. This is what I can tell you...

1. I was one of the few people here who was telling everyone else here to give Collins some time. He had what it takes to be a solid safety in this league. The things that I saw from him in college (tackling, instincts, break on the ball, etc) were there. When he came to the Giants, he was thinking too much about his assignment and there was a delay in his reaction time. He was also trying to cover for some shitty LBs around him.

2. I did not watch Eli Apple in college. After we drafted him I spent a lot of time looking at as much video of him as I could. Immediately, I could see that he had some major issues. His footwork, positioning, and ball awareness just are not there. The first two can be taught but not this late in his football career. Ball awareness cannot be taught. The grabbing you are seeing is because he is out of position. He instinctively is using his hands to make up for the fact that he is out of position and the WR has beaten him. This situation is NOT going to turn around. The kid was fortunate enough to play for a top program in college and the lack of NFL talent playing against him did not expose his weaknesses to the degree that we are seeing it now. He is a solid backup CB in this league. Reese blew this one. In fact, his flaws are so obvious to me that I want to know who the fuck scouted him. I am sure there are dozens of better cover corners playing for smaller programs in the NCAA

The 0-5 start is turning many fans into emo.

reminds me of DRC his first 3-4 years in the NFL.
Sounds like him too; lots of confidence and bravado, meh in tackling(mostly averse to it)and a holding call penalty waiting to happen(but he was better than EA in hiding some holds).
He needs to shut up and learn how to cover.
