NFT: 76ers give Joel Embiid 5 year-$148 million 'max' extension

est1986 : 10/9/2017 8:28 pm
After playing 31 career games, in an injury-plagued, 3 NBA seasons.
Never played 30 mins+ in a single game ever but he has alot of talent.
Good move?

Fultz

Simmons

Embiid

plus 40+ million in cap next offseason, not shabby if guys stay healthy and pan out... you Knicks fans would be drooling if you had this much young talent, guess tanking relatively worked for Philly. Don't like the trade for Fultz, I like Fultz but I would have done what i could have to keep that pick they gave Boston. If you moved up in this past draft it should have been for Ball. Simmons and Ball could have played together I thought. Other than that I like the direction Philly is headed.
Tanking didn't necessarily work out for philly

Okafor was a miss
Noel traded

They had to give Embiid a contract but it's a HUGE risk with his health history

Thx. Just read it. Philly was smart to include an injury clause

I think they missed big time with Okafor over KP but other than that... its not like Noel was the worst pick in the world, they could have gotten the Greek Freak instead that year (he went 8 picks later, I think) but don't blame them to much, 14 other teams missed on Antetokounmpo too.

I agree. My point was that they had to absolutely sign Embiid no matter what his injury history was or is But like I said it was a good move to put the injury clause in

Tanking worked?
Keith : 10/10/2017 9:17 am : link
Wake me up when they have a winning season. It didn't work yet and we are seeing the risks of doing what they did. If Embiid becomes one of those players that never reaches his potential because of injury(very likely), then it will be 10 years of "trusting the process" with no results. This is a major risk as Embiid cannot stay healthy.

Haha, exactly. They've been tanking for what, 5 years now and still haven't had a winning record. How many more tank years do they get before the results need to show? Don't get me wrong, I don't blame them. The NBA system is a joke. But we've been hearing about how awesome the tank is going for years now
The team has some protection for themselves in this contract
GiantFilthy : 10/10/2017 9:32 am : link
but they didn't have to give it to him yet. Why not wait to see if he can survive this season?

@JoshEberley
Greg Oden played 51 more games than Joel Embiid years 1-3.
how has tanking worked?
nygiants16 : 10/10/2017 9:35 am : link
i must have missed the season where they made the playoffs, they have been tabking for like 10 years now..

and dont say well the knicjs have been rebuilding for 15 years, knicks just started a true rebuild..
Tanking absolutely worked

Did everyone fall asleep around the NBA draft when they used assets (and not many!) to move up to trade Fultz?

Not too mention, they may have the most cap room out of anyone in the NBA. They'll have a ton of money to throw around.
to draft Fultz*

So winning games doesn't matter? When do results come in to play? Another 5 years? 10 years? Do we get to continue calling it a success until then?
cap room means nothing if no one wants to go there
nygiants16 : 10/10/2017 9:46 am : link
what superstar is going to philly?

embiid is always hurt..

simmons just missed the entire season because of a foot injury..

This year the 76ers will be remarkably better. Next year more so. The whole point so tanking was to accumulate assets to eventually build a team. The 76ers have done that, and still have assets in the bank, both in terms of draft picks and money.

Contrast that to what the Nets have done in the past 3 years -- what do the Nets have going forward? What high draft picks do they have? And I root for the Nets! But I'd rather be in the 76ers shoes with their future.
Dude is a freak.

I'd trade situations with Philly in a heartbeat. I wouldn't be surprised if this slimmed-down Okafor is a lot more effective than what we've seen from him so far.

Fultz/Simmons/Embiid/Saric make for a hell of an arsenal of young assets.
as far as I can tell
Enzo : 10/10/2017 10:02 am : link
the full details have not been released on this contract. I think it's safe to assume the Sixers have give themselves some protection if his injuries continue.

how do you know they will be better? i get being excited but they have done nothing on the court...
If you are going to bring up the nets
hitdog42 : 10/10/2017 10:16 am : link
what They have done in 2 years to overhaul the franchise is actually remarkable - the future is now brighter- the present is watchable good basketball... and nets fans only had 2 years of awful.
They were in the playoffs 3 straight years just 3 yrs back while the sixers were still tanking.

So yes the sixers are in a great spot now.... it’s taken forever to get here ... but the nets have turned around things very well too
There is a lot of silly...

Not a huge B-ball fan, but how long did they "tank" for...what, something like 5 years? I mean...isn't that horrible in terms of what sports represents?

They should be competing for the championship at this point......

I don't get the credit they sometimes get for doing it this way.
How big a deal
Rover : 10/10/2017 11:04 am : link
Are the Sixers in Philly now?
I get the sense that for some reason the Sixers are a distant 4th (odd because usually it is hockey).
I mean they never seem to have a rabid base like the Flyers or Iggles or Phillies...but maybe it's just they have stunk for so long (then again so do the Knicks and they draw).

I did hear they sold out all their games this season.
I think its fair to say
est1986 : 10/10/2017 11:32 am : link
Philly has been really bad fpr 5+ years but they have been in full blown tank mode for at least three... Yeah its been hard for the fans obviously but NOW it appears they have a playoff team with a nucleus of young stars! 2 number 1 overall picks and probably the most talented young big man in the game... Add a star free agent next summer and let these young guys develop this year and philly can go from tank to the top before we know it. Simmons reminds me of a young lebron, bigger, less explosive, better facilitator.

I've seen a lot of Simmons and Embiid jerseys out and about in the last 6 months.

People here are incredibly excited about the Sixers. Easily as excited about the Eagles. Maybe more.
