I'm all for gender equality and equal opportunities for both sexes and all races, but why don't girls just stick to girl scouts and let boys have the boy scouts? Why does there need to be constant blurring of the lines between sexes in the name of equality?
Exactly what I was going to say. But it's good to know the OP is for gender equality.
"Scouts" and keep the dens same gender would be a good solution.

I have no skin in the game, but doesn't that just take us back to square one? "Hey, how come only the boys get that den?"
I don't see what the problem is other than changing "tradition".

I guess I just don't see a lot of logic in this rush to make "equal rights" synonymous with "we're all the same."

Well at least the decision will be at a local, neigborhood level. If parents want a co-ed den they could always try to organize one, right? Or if mom/dad don't want little Suzie camping with boys they can find an all girl den. Either way it would all be the same Scouts with the same activities being offered.
If this is true then I totally believe this is revenue driven. Seems like a no brainer really.
Or you could all lose your minds over gender equality. Whatever floats your boat :)

That is, in fact, what they're doing. (Well, they're not officially becoming "The Scouts").
This smells more like a "rock the boat" decision to break a traditional gender-separated organization
Each den can decide whether to sell popcorn or cookies (BoyScout popcorn sucks BTW) as well as what other activites to focus on each year.
Not to mention there is no comparable achievement in GS like becoming a Eagle Scout.
That said...not sure I like the idea. Boy Scouts has an offshoot called Venture Scouting which does admit girls. But if your trying to be fair...girls should be admitted to Boy Scouts.

Good post. Hey, girls at that age probably want to do an over night hike and cool stuff and don't have the opportunity.
Boys and Girls Scouts of America.
It kinda makes sense.
I wouldn't have thought this was necessary until I started thinking about it, but I don't see why it wouldn't make sense to merge the two and just start a "Scouts" organization.
Did I say I was upset? I put it out there for discussion.
I didn't realize how far behind the Girl Scouts lacked in opportunity. Good point about allowing girls the chance to attain Eagle. I learned something.
With all the stuff going on in the world, why does this thread upset YOU?

Mike great post. I too have a daughter who was in GS and hated it. She's really athletic and loves the outdoors. My Son is 9 and in the Boy Scouts(In fact we just had a sleepover at the USS New Jersey in Camden Saturday). So I've seen both organizations close up and you hit the nail on the head. They do not offer remotely comparable experiences. I am very progressive and am all for equality and righting wrongs. I too like you am not entirely in favor of having the girls join, but that having been said my pack is very inclusive. On the trips like this past weekend as well as the camp outs they welcome the families to come along and participate including the sisters. Frankly this will create a lot of noise and debates on the cable news shows and frankly what it will amount to is at the most a few girls per den joining. The scouts themselves probably won't care(They just want to camp, cut things up and run around) and frankly half the leaders are women so there is no gender issue there.
