I'll say this about Eli Apple

Sy'56 : 10/11/2017 2:56 pm
If there is ONE player I had to choose from the ENTIRE team from training camp that simply didn't seem to take anything serious, it would have been Apple. if you asked me on Labor Day, the answer would have been exactly that.

He was constantly the guy laughing, looking around, joking around...during, before, after plays. Even when everyone was going full speed.

Does this mean I think he had personality issues? No. Do I have insider information on him not being a guy that cares? No.

But listening to him talk, watching his zero-level progress from college, and seeing him laugh almost uncontrolably on the bench in the 4th quarter when we all realized NYG would soon be 0-5 on a day where the roster was banged up badly....it all leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I am old school with some things, I know. I hate seeing opponents laugh and joke with each other in the middle of a game. Competition to me is something that I think should consume you almost completely when in the heat of the moment (like a game) and I think the some of these kids more now than ever care more about their Instagram and paychecks than winning. The bitter fan in me is speaking, I know. But I also know the teams that win year after year via culture don't deal with this.
another Reese wasted high pick

ridiculous.
Yep.
Fish : 10/11/2017 2:58 pm : link
Noticed him flex after he made 1 tackle and team was losing. Look over to his teammates flexing for a tackle. Huh.
I am with you

though I think FA also adds a lot to that as does Fantasy Football. It is more about individuals than team (take Patriots out of that comment) and when you have too many of those guys the results show..

We need a no nonsense coach and some bad ass players..
He's very immature
JonC : 10/11/2017 2:59 pm : link
and 21, his daddy needs to set him straight.
I don't think he's immature
Gman11 : 10/11/2017 3:00 pm : link
I think he's an idiot.
Based on the behavior I see,

it seems like a lot of players don't even know (or care) what the fucking score is.
Flowers and Apple at the top of the draft 2 years in a row...
Chris684 : 10/11/2017 3:04 pm : link
I think there's still hope for Flowers (maybe at another position) but that is BRUTAL.
That sounds like a maturity issue.
Beezer : 10/11/2017 3:05 pm : link
Could his inability to recognize appropriate places for appropriate behaviors/emotions carry over into his ability to prepare (or not)?

This team is a train wreck. Reading this about Apple is just one of the many cars in the pile-up.
Leonard Floyd with a sick, relentless pursuit safety

on Bradford this week.

How's Conklin? A top RT in the NFL you say?

Giants had nasty luck in that draft. Tunsil was the no brainer pick in that draft after Conklin was gone. Top 5 value at 10. BPA + screaming need in 1 pick.
I've seen fantasy football blamed for a lot of things
pjcas18 : 10/11/2017 3:06 pm : link
but this is the first time I've seen it blamed for a CB's lack of development and intensity.

Still no idea how that dot connecting works.
no one was down on Apple last year
blueblood : 10/11/2017 3:09 pm : link
he has had a rough year to be sure. Im not ready to put him in the bust category just yet...

I also understand that I am 51 years old.. and todays players are just different..
This was the first knock on him prior to the draft

Many teams questioned his character

I have zero problem with Flowers' attitude. The guy tries. He is just being played out of position. Physically, he cannot do what they are asking him to do.

Completely different story with Apple.
Sy...this absolutely confirms

what I believe and have been mentioning...there is a country club atmosphere now on this team, a malaise...whatever you want to call it and it's not just Apple but it's other guys who are not performing and there are no consequences.

To me, this just illustrates that DRC has a point and that Apple's ass should be nailed to the bench. But, I can understand the frustration of a guy like DRC when he sees guys like Flowers, Jerry, Apple, Hart perform terribly week in and week out and there they are...still starting.

Where is the accountability? But then you don't see it with the GM or elsewhere so what do you expect?
great stuff Sy...
Andy in Boston : 10/11/2017 3:14 pm : link
again....if I'm Reese & Co...you know they did their research on him, but this kind of stuff has to come out and be noticeable pre-draft. I can't justify drafting a guy in the top 15 if he's not laser focused on football. I'm not saying Apple isn't going to be a good player....but crazy that you would take a chance on him that high.

Couldn't be. We were told over and over again prior to that draft that Leonard Floyd would never amount to anything.
Anyone remember
old man : 10/11/2017 4:10 pm : link
Long time ago when you were on the HS football team and there was a guy who seemed talented but not intensely interested in getting better, and the coach thought he could be a good player, then decides that he's gonna find out one way or another about the kids interest in or heart for football.
So one day during tackling practice, he gives the kid the ball, regardless of the kids position, lines up 4-5 guys each on the he left and right to form a tunnel, feels the kid to run thru any just about 3 yards outside the last guys in line is the teams biggest and best tackler who lays a nice hit on the kid. Then coach tells the kid he's the human tackling dummy of the day and everybody gets a shot at the kid.
I was a backup-3rd stringer but the guy with the ball made all-State as a Jr and Sr.
IK you can't do that today....but this thread just reflected need for that kind of moment.
He is not serious , Never saw a Pro Bowl DB where a dumb mouthpeice
Elite Mobster #32 : 10/11/2017 4:15 pm : link
Like one similar to this shown in the link. I could believe the coaches would allow that. I could not find the exact one.

I did see the play where he did not step up to pursue the runner on the screen pass as well.

Here is the deal about his play
RetroJint : 10/11/2017 4:24 pm : link
He wasn't told yesterday he was not going to dress against Denver. And he didn't leave the field early last Sunday. So if we are talking about maturation issues -please-include the two veteran corners as well. Eli came into this league as a 20 year-old. How old are those other two fucking guys?

That must be it. It's the mouthpiece that is holding him back from being a Pro Bowl DB!
No thats not what I meant at all
Elite Mobster #32 : 10/11/2017 4:40 pm : link
I said the mouth piece was fucking silly. I also don't see what he was trying to say. Maybe you can explain it to me.

Actually Snacks where like fangs, but he is a D-Lineman and it makes sense.

But a DB wearing a silly mouth piece like that. I don't have the one he wore.

Your contributions are invaluable. Thank you

Would you happen to have any insights that you would care to share on the general attitude of the team? It's easy to see that guys like Eli and Collins are locked on and are trying to win games, but what about the rest?
Seeing him laugh on the bench means
section125 : 10/11/2017 7:13 pm : link
nothing. Obviously other players were laughing too. Nobody jokes and laughs alone. So do we bitch about the other players sitting near him as co-conspirators.
I don't see what you saw in preseason because I'm not there and if you saw additional things that gave you pause than that is different, but laughing on the bench doesn't bother me. Lack of progress does.

Exactly! This is not a surprise. The HC has had an UNDISCIPLINED and DUMB football team since day 1. Stupid Penalties, plays, and actions have been consistent. No accountability and no respect for the HC. If Mac isn't fired before the end of the season this Franchise will take over as the big Joke of the NFL.
Apple is a waste of a #1 pick
PatersonPlank : 10/12/2017 9:39 am : link
Seriously, don't you think there are probably 20 FA DB's we could pick up right now that could perform at the same level?
Thanks Sy...
Dan in the Springs : 10/12/2017 9:53 am : link
good insight. I appreciate it.

Having said that, this doesn't make him a complete bust, nor does his play for the season. He is very young, and very talented. This year he might just learn what it means to be a professional.

What we might be seeing is the result of poor leadership, from the coaches, team captains, and other players in his unit.

When we talk about building a team - the coach is the most important decision made. This coach, who is very young himself, has created a culture that tolerates immaturity and a lack of focus during the limited practice time they have. No surprise that the team comes out unfocused, unprepared, and undisciplined.

Simply put, there are other coaches and players who wanted it more than we did this year.
This is typical of fan reactions
Bubba : 10/12/2017 10:11 am : link
when are not going well. I distinctly remember Jason Sehorn laughing with Eagle players on the field after a big loss with playoff implications and saying WTF. It is what it is.
You guys can say
Josh in the City : 10/12/2017 10:12 am : link
whatever you want about Apple but I still see him being a fantastic corner in a year or two. The guys is like glue on the receivers he's covering every time they're in man coverage. There are some small technique issues he still need to work on (TURN YOUR DAMN HEAD AROUND!!!) but everything is correctable. He reminds me a lot of Corey Webster who was a disaster his first few seasons but then became a great cover corner for us. He's still very young (and yes, somewhat immature) but I have a feeling many around here will be eating crow in the next couple of seasons.
Tunsil was reportedly off their board

waste of time.
Apple is a lightning rod this season
JonC : 10/12/2017 10:17 am : link
because his position and mistakes are painfully out in the open, but he's absolutely not the only player on this team acting like a ding dong out there on a weekly basis.

Makes no sense to single out Apple and DRC, further indicative of their internal problems.
Players still get paid after a loss
Bubba : 10/12/2017 10:17 am : link
the fans get upset. Way of the world. If they were paid based on performance every game things might be different.
