Is it me, or is this starting to feel like 1991-1992 again?

-Team severely underachieving.

-Crippling injury to the franchise's star player.

-Offensive guru head coach who seems to be over his head and has an adversarial relationship with the press.

-Players quitting on the team.

Of course, in 1992, the Giants overcame a bad start to climb to 5-4 before the wheels came off.

(if you want to call it a good thing) is that the offseason is going to be interesting, at the very least. The Giants will be on the lips of everyone, including local sports radio/tv personalities.

The only way Mara can legitimately keep Reese is if Reese is just the public face for Chris Mara and Chris Mara is the one actually picking the players.

Yes and NO! Those teams were VETERAN LADEN, Super Bowl Champion filled teams. This one has very left from 11 and the other vets have been on losing teams a lot here. I see a YOUNG Coach over his head and a lot of players who believe in their own reps more than actual performance.

I think the team is too much DIVA and not enough Lunch Pail!

We took an unproven coordinator to follow a strong proven coach. With a talented team.
It proves all the X and O's does not make up for a strong leader and motivational coach.
He has lost this team because he doesn't know how to lead and motive players.
The coach of whose name we dare not speak was the same way.
The veterans ran over him and did what they wanted. When they started losing he could not pull them back.
We took a smart coordinator who had never proved he could lead but was a good X and O guy and told him to lead 53 men and he doesn't have that skill set.

At least the 1991-92 Giants were somewhat competitive. But this feels like a rift developing between players/coaches reminiscent of that era.

I will agree with that.. It started with Hoss over Simms and went downhill from there.

Here it is more just rudderless leadership and the team made up of a Star Player who is very much the Diva. We have no LEADER on this team...

we had a read and react defense, now we have a read and react offense.

the big difference is that unlike in 92 where we won 6 games and were actually 5-4 at one point, we have a good chance at joining the 2008 lions as the only team to go winless in a season.

with the season ending injury to beckham, the infighting, the lack of leadership from any of our vets, the poor coaching, sloppy play in all three phases, I find it far fetched that we are going to win a game this season, if we couldn't beat a jet lagged, winless, homeless chargers team on our turf.

fall so woefully short of expectations so quickly.

2003 had similar expectations without as much talent, but its death wasnt quite as quick.

2013 was bad but only a front office clinging to the past had any thoughts about that team seriously competing. Any level of widespread expectation was not there.

I feel bad for all of you who are season ticket holders, a season like this is like throwing your money in the garbage.

Think of this:

All was lost before we were one calendar month removed from opening night.

All has been lost with 6 out of 8 home games remaining.

What does Mara think of meaningless October home games? We've literally never been here before.

This raises two very important questions. First, will ownership move quickly and decisively to correct this situation? And second, how long will this situation take to correct ... meaning return us to power?

We didn't win a SB for 15 years after 1991-92

I can't remember a team being a media darling SB pick to then being a front runner for the top pick in the draft before the 2nd round of the baseball playoffs. Maybe like an inverse of the 99 Rams? The 2000 Skins and 2011 Eagles come to mind, but they were at least mildly competitive. This is virgin territory.

Giants training camp. LT was talking with some fans while the rookies were doing some "hazing" type drills and Handley comes over and starts yelling at him to get back on the field. My brother and I were saying to each what is this jerk trying to prove. The look on LT's face said it all. It took a great amount of will for him to not slug Handley. This while other vets were just milling around as well.

I can't imagine many other coaches doing: he started Hostetler over Phil Simms.

Imagine if Roger Lewis acquits himself fairly well the rest of this year and posts 600 yards and 5 TD's. Handley would then start him over OBJ next season.

Not only that, but he essentially waited until midnight the night before kickoff week 1 to announce Hoss was his starter. Iím sure that was great for the morale of the veteran team he inherited

I think it is worse also. Even in 1992, they were reasonably competitive during the first half of the season. The Handley years also were magnified (imo) by the contrast with the awesome Parcells' years. What we are seeing now is pitiful, hopeless football with the season over before it even got started. This catastrophe is also following a run of disappointments for quite a while now (with the exception of last year).

Listen, this team is a wreck and things are really grim right now, but Giants were in position to win each of the last 3 games and blew it in last few minutes of each game. They have been competitive.

However, with them being 0-5 and now with all the injuries and issues in locker room, it seems so much worse. Right now, it is so much worse but you can't deny that they've been competitive the last 3 games.

At the time, I definitely remember some fans being excited about the possibility given Hostetler's much better mobility (and of course the SB win). I don't recall a huge outcry about it being a "terrible" decision when it was actually made. At least among my circle of Giants' fans back then, I remember some people being against the move and some in favor of it.

Revisionist history. Most Giants fans at the time were clamoring for him to start Hostetler over Simms. The mistake Handley made was opening it up to a competition in the preseason, which tied his hands when Hostetler clearly had the better stats that year. If Handley could've withstood the media/fan pressure in June that would come from stating that Simms was his starter, he wouldn't've been obligated to start him in September following the open competition.

He who shall not be named didn't win shit.

Part of the problem now is expectations were set rather high by last year (which perhaps was incorrect). When expectations are high and games/players are being lost, of course shit is going to go south. For all the shit that's dumped on this coach, some of these problems existed 2 years ago when a Hall of Famer was still here. Heck, the Hall of Fame coach lost at least 6 games or 6 of 7 games each of his final 3 seasons.

Are you kidding me? Handley inherited a 13-3 champion and turned them into 8-8 and 6-10. Even Dan fucking Reeves, who sucked, got them back to 11-5 before the team just got too old and Simms had to retire. It was absolutely a debacle.
