Presuming Mara is making a change with the GM/Front Office

JohnF : 10/11/2017 5:40 pm
When is the best time to do it?

We all know the Giants keep track of all players in the NFL and other leagues, in case the opportunity for Free Agency or trades occur. I would think they have a ranking of coaches and front office people as well, so they'd have lists to work with.

Some coaches won't be available until after the season (NFL), some coaches in college won't be available until after the college playoffs. If your target coach (and his preferred list of assistant coaches) won't be free until sometime next year, then it makes little sense to fire McAdoo during the bye, unless things go out of control. In that case, Spags gets promoted, but there are no major changes with the staff that season.

Same thing with the Front office; unless there is an available candidate during the season, you stay with Reese at least until the season is over.

But do you stay with Reese and the other staff until the draft is done, or do you fire him when the season is over? And is the time between the end of the season and Draft day enough for a new GM to prepare for the draft?
There is an interesting trend
dancing blue bear : 10/11/2017 5:51 pm : link
going around the league where a new GM takes on the old head coach for a year. It happened in Carolina and Detroit.

It makes sense on a few levels. It is to the incoming GMs advantage, as it is, in essence, a free year. He can get his feet on the ground and take time to evaluate everything from top to bottom slowly and thoroughly. But the failure would not be "on him" He gets to pick a coach or stay with the one he has.

Anyway, if we can get rid of Reese I will live with give mac adoodle another year. I don't think he is the guy, and would prefer to see a clean sweep, but A new GM would be enough progress to satiate my rage.
The Giants should be the most attractive opening
Jay on the Island : 10/11/2017 6:02 pm : link
If they decide to fire McAdoo. They should have a top 5 pick to use on their next franchise QB plus they have several young stars to work with.
I would prefer to fire both in season
larryflower37 : 10/11/2017 6:18 pm : link
and go with interim GM and HC.
This ends all the rumors and you can start to have conversations and candidates are not making snap decisions, they can analyze the team and know what they will need to do.
Gives you a jump on the competition.

I think it will be a sought-after job with a top 5 pick and strong talent in a great football city.
I think you have to consider all the possible scenarios
Mike from Ohio : 10/11/2017 6:21 pm : link
and you make a move when you decide all the possible scenarios all end up with you firing them.

For example, if the Giants win out and go 11-5 and make the playoffs, are you firing anyone? If no, you don't make a move yet. If yes, then you fire them now. Why keep guys twisting in the wind. Get a start on next year.

I don't think Mara has reached that point yet, and don't think he will even at the bye, which is why I don't think we see anything until December.

Let's face it, every NFL person knows right now who the top 100 draft picks are.
The best option is to fire Reese and let the scouts compile list of preferred talent.
The evaluation of current players began , at latest , last week. Compile list of who goes , who stays, and what FA available.
Mac Magoo future depends on how he handles this FUBAR, even if he only wins 3 games(Dallas, Philly,DC) decision should not be made on 2 completely different
seasons.
GM to be hired after all evaluations completed, and Mara etc can decide which direction to go. Then new GM can run draft process etc...

Keep in mind that this is the NY Giants and the Mara family

They are loyal and take FOREVER to decide anything. Hoping for a mid season change is stupid.
Are we talking in the context of likely to happen or what you just
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/11/2017 7:40 pm : link
want to see happen?

Because anyone getting fired in-season isn't likely to happen in the least barring some kind of catastrophic scandal.
Reese should go first
DavidinBMNY : 10/11/2017 8:57 pm : link
He's been the consistent thread between coaches.

I think McAdoo is green, has made bone headed mistakes, and I don't like him but I also don't hate him. He coached that team into the playoffs - albeit it was on Defense they still made it as a rookie head coach.

This latest twist with DRC shows a player being unprofessional and a coach acting professsional even with his job on a supposed hot seat. Good for him - if he goes down he keeps his principles.

David B. : 10/11/2017 9:19 pm : link
is a silly thing to do.
The issue isn't just Reese, it's the scouting department,
yatqb : 10/11/2017 9:24 pm : link
which has a ton of old timers and somehow can't identify OL or LB talent. So how do you turn over a scouting department in mid-stream? You likely can't. So regardless of when/if they fire Reese they have a lot more work to do.

That won't work here if the Giants are in position to get a franchise QB. You want to start over if that' sthe case.

Especially if McAdoo goes something like 2-14 or worse.
Do

NOT presume that.
But in playing along, Reese&Co are gone; Mc gets the final year unless he really has lost the team(and it seems the wheels on the bus...).

The quotes from guys like DRC and Landon Collins, along with the in game play, are pretty clear evidence McAdoo has lost the team.

"He lost the team" was a popular go-to criticism for years with coughlin even as early as 2006 and that really didn't turn out to be true nearly every time people went to that well.

I don't remember too many players speaking out like they are
now about TC . The last guy I would have expected was Landon Collins . DRC has played well and has fought hard when
your slot corner makes 11 tackles it was like playing LB
and he is no spring chicken , He also isn't the first guy
to walk off the field .
Either way it's time to clean house I hope like hell that
the do it . I hated this past draft because of the way
the O-line was handled or lets say not handled .
I believe Mara has not made any

Decisions about going forward. With 11 games left, to do so would be an irresponsible overreaction.

Fans can do that C. E. O. 's can t.

You guys just want to dismiss last season. You rationalize it away by saying they won with defense. If MacDoo gets blamed for 0-5, he gets credit for 11-5, can t have it both ways.

If MacAdoo turns this mess around and goes say 6-5, with wins against Dallas, Philly, Washington and maybe Denver or K. C , wouldn't t you want him back.

However, unlikely as the above scenario is, you let the season play out.

If it continues to spiral, you make changes, and Mara will.

The scorn with which you speak of Giants ownership would lead one to believe they never had success.

You sure you don't remember players speaking out about TC?

Exhibit A
Exhibit B
Exhibit C

There are plenty more examples. Tiki was fairly outspoken. Strahan had his moments of obvious discord early on in the TC era. I'll never understand why people have to resort to revisionist history to try to make their points. Is it just blind bias?
I doubt he does anything if folks continue to show for the games

"We were very competitive last year and this year kind of gotta away from us with some unexpected injuries...blah blah blah". we will begin our meetings and evaluations to sort out the challenges we faced this season...blah blah blah

translation: accept the shit we are giving you

behind the scenes we will release the problems and unworkables and continue with the plan to get better.
While I understand and am sympathetic
section125 : 10/12/2017 9:58 am : link
to guaranteed contracts(because of injuries) and a CAP, it certainly makes it tough to clean house of malcontents. Players can lip off and make for an ugly locker room and there really isn't a sword over their heads. Even if you could find trading partners, the team is stuck with residual guarantee money against the CAP. Very hard to move on from this type of situation.

I'm sorry but the logic "we were 11-5, the credit must go right to the HC! " is dumb. It's a rationalization to say they won b/c of the defense? You are aware they didn't score over 30 points once? How about having the best red zone defense in the NFL? They practically gave up on O and completely relied on the defense last year. Game management was good last year, i will give you that. The offensive minded HC gets judged on his offense moreso than the defense and that is completely fair. His offense sucks.
