Remembering Osi Umenyiora

KentGraham : 10/11/2017 11:08 pm
This is going to be a long and dreadful season, so here's an idea, let's spend each week sharing our favorite memories of some of recent or not so recent Giants greats.

This week I want to bring up Osi. I have a lot of memories of this guy, but my favorite was after SB 42 when I was driving home with my father after watching the victory at his friends house. Osi was being being interviewed on WFAN and was asked about the dline's performance, he proceeded to quote Ricky Bobby and stated "well we are the best there is, when we wake up each morning we piss excellence".

He was a pleasure to watch and was a person that I was proud to root for. What are your favorite Osi moments?

sack against GB in NFC Divisional game 2011 season honestly may have saved that game for us, even though the score says we won by a lot, Rodgers had an easy TD to Jennings on that play, Ross bit on the pump and Osi slapped the ball out of his hand, and then knocked it away from the lineman about to recover it. 100% saved a touchdown and maybe a game
One of my favorite memories about those years

and in 2007 in particular (when they lead the league in sacks) was when opponents faced the Giants and late in the game, you'd see those road white Giants jerseys swarm the opposing QB and start dancing/celebrating.

Hearing basically nothing from the home crowd except moaning and groaning was one of my favorite visuals during that era. Especially late in a game.
Which is something this clown defense can't

I actually don't think he recorded a single sack in the 2007 playoffs.

I remember him right before SB42 on Inside the NFL in an interview with Bob Costas (would that be right? am I misremembering?), he was asked about being nervous, intimidated. He had this look of utter contempt: “You mean, are we *afraid* to play the Patriots? [stern look of even more contempt]. No, we’re not afraid.”

For a fleeting moment, I thought maybe the Giants could win after all.

For some reason I was thinking of that too.

I was at the game. SF wasn't any good, but they were keeping much closer than it should have been, until Osi stepped up. Classic playmaking by a playmaker. Those are are games that the Giants lose painfully without guys like Osi.
With an exception of the early TD they had, up by 1

I don't think that game was ever close at all.

I remember Matt vasgersian ripped on Tiki and Tony Siragusa getting all pissy about it haha

Let's also remember the man who was responsible for him being drafted - Jerry Reese, who reportedly pushed hard for NYG to draft him despite being from a smaller school.

Too true, even last year (remember that) they needed a blitzer to get real pressure, which the overpaid DE's did not provide.
Feels like some revisionist history
RobCarpenter : 10/12/2017 12:32 pm : link
I seem to recall a player that ran too far upfield, and did not maintain the edge on running plays.

If this team was stopping the run when Osi was playing it was b/c of Tuck and Strahan. Osi benefited from playing with those two and when they were gone, yikes.
.....
Route 9 : 10/13/2017 3:20 am : link
Eh. Who didn't benefit from playing with Strahan? That DE duo of those two in 2005-2007 was a force like no other. If anything, with the monster game Osi had vs Philly early in the 2007, Strahan was getting a lot of one on one matchup and he was benefiting from playing with Osi, like in that 49er game mentioned. Osi still got to the QB! Sacked Dilfer, stripped him of the ball and returned it for a TD, all in the same damn play!

Lol or the Lions game that very same year, that was embarrassing game for that RT who went one on one with Strahan. Loved that defensive line. Tuck wasn't even a starter in 2007.

I think it's safe to say Osi did have a bad 2009 season the year he came off the injury. But then again that defense was just downright awful all around the board in the main culprit was Bill Sheridan or whatever his name was. The guy was great and had his flaws but man he could make some plays and get to the QB and gave them a miserable day. He was great for what he did.
