It is 1983 All Over Again

DAGlazer : 10/12/2017 5:42 pm
For you young ones who do not remember any coaches before Coughlin, 1983 was the first year of Bill Parcells' coaching career and we went 3-12-1. That tie was probably the worst Monday Night Football game ever.

The thing is, no one expected the season to be that bad. We had just missed the playoffs because of a tiebreaker and things looked to be on the way up. Instead, the season was a disaster.

First, Tuna chose the immortal Scott Brunner to be the QB over Phil Simms and he was awful. Then when Tuna finally benched Brunner and put in Phil, Simms broke his thumb in a fluke injury following through on a pass. The thumb hit the top of the helmet of a pass rusher and was pushed back through the skin. I remember it like it was yesterday.

After that injury, we only won one more game the rest of the season.

IMHO, the injury to Odell will have a similar impact to this year's team. There will be more than a few players that will lose hope.
The problem with that analogy
Matt in SGS : 10/12/2017 5:50 pm : link
is that the 1983 Giants were putting the pieces in place for a dominant defensive unit that you could see coming. They had LT as a rising monster. They had a strong leader in Harry Carson. They had young defensive players like Burt, Marshall, and Kinard. You could see the building blocks in place. And that team was a playoff team in 1981, the strike hit in 1982 and Perkins left. In hindsight, 1983 was the abberation as they made the playoffs the next 3 years and won the Super Bowl. So essentially, the core of that team, with Parcells there, made the playoffs 4 of 6 seasons. This Giants team has made the playoffs once in the past 5 years and won't make it this year, so 1 in 6. This is who the Giants are, last year was the fluke.
Which is it? Everyone comparing this year to a year in the past....

It's 1983! It's 2003! It's 1978! Its 1992!

How about...it's 2017 and this shitshow is on its own level.
Ho Burn!

I don't know Bill Parcells, and Bill Parcells was never . . . .

a friend of mine, but I DO know that McAdoofus ain't no Bill Parcells!!!
If anything... it’s 93-94 again
mattnyg05 : 10/12/2017 6:54 pm : link
93 we went 11-5 and everyone thought we had a new era dawning with Reeves but there was a considerable thud in 94 and the bottom fell out the two years after. If McAdoo stinks, losing big could be the best thing this year. Might be the only way to get rid of him sooner than later.
The 70's ....... Giants Ground Hog Day
louinma : 10/12/2017 7:11 pm : link
The worst part about the 70s is it it didn't end until the early 80s. 2017 maybe the beginning of another long dry spell.

Agreed! I watched every single one game in 1983 and you could see the pieces coming together. Yes Tuna was struggling and George Young thought of firing him after that year but that defense was a powerhouse in the making, you could see it coming. Simms should have been the QB all along.

2017? For me the book is still out on McAdoo with the linchpin being "does he loses the respect in the locker room." If he does lose it, he should be fired. Time will tell.

But 2017 ain't no 1983, that's for sure!
I don't see this team
Giants_ROK : 10/12/2017 8:10 pm : link
coming close to winning three games. In that regard, it could be worse; or better.
You could see it coming spot on.
Bluesbreaker : 10/12/2017 8:18 pm : link
Woolfolf there 1sr round pick was average at best . They had
picked up Carpenter and I remember him breaking okk a 23 yard TD run something we had not seen in a while . Joe Morris languished on the bench finally got his chance and overtook
Woolfolk I was begging to see Morris play . You could see the
Defense with LT emerging but after that 3-12-1 season
I predicted that the defense would lead them back to the playoffs . Loved that O-line it had the Morris sweep down
PAT fun to watch.
OK.

So...in 2020 Wing wiffs on a punt on a windy day, and around 2/21/'21 our QB goes 21/25, gets MVP, and NYFG win SB?

Earlier than I expect Gmen for a SB, but ,cool!!!

this^

and there's really no comparison to that season
No unfortunately it's not like 83
RetroJint : 10/12/2017 9:18 pm : link
No Karl Nelson or Perry Williams red-shirting on the IR. A young , Super/-Bowl QB on that roster, even if it took Parcells awhile to figure out who it was. The present-day Giants have an old man at QB. I suspect '16 won't come to be remembered even like Fassel's first year . Rather it will more like '70 or '72, when we were delusional to think a championship contender was right around the corner. Going forward:

1 Eli is almost done. 2. Who knows how good Beckham is going to be when he comes back? M. 3. The oline will have to be constructed yet another time. 4. Thr defense will be burdened by two expensive , under-performing defensive ends of questionable motivation. 5 . There is not one linebacker who can grab a game by the balls and make a game-changing play . Thr promise hidden in the embers of the 3-12-1 of '83? You've got to be shitting me .
How do you guys remember 1983 so clearly?
exiled : 10/12/2017 9:39 pm : link
I’m sure I watched each game in ‘83. I remember Simms breaking his thumb, but I’d never be able to tell you which season. Couldn’t tell you the record in ‘83 if my life depended on it.

No sarcasm here. It just amazes me sometimes, the details some of you guys remember. Impressive.

I remember 1979-1990 like it was yesterday. They started getting good after so many bad years.

The recent years, I can't recall a damn thing even though I still watch every game.

Weird. Comes with age, I guess.
No comparison

In 1983 there were NFL football players on the fields. Today...Pima donnas and look at me drama queens. The game is headed to the depths of the WWE. All they need is folding chairs.

LT complaining 83-84, after the Giants released Brian Kelly, saying "all we have now is a bunch of guys that can run fast". Of course that was before he realized that Parcells knew what he was doing. Give Macadoo a chance?
Morning all, maybe this is the BEST thing
Dave on the UWS : 10/13/2017 8:41 am : link
to happen to this organization. Since ‘11 I believe they’ve thought they were “just a player or two away”, that the “OL just needs some tweaking or a little more growth and cohesion “. Well the only way to shake Mara out of that stupendous delusion is to have a colossal dumpster fire (insert gif here) happen. Either Mac grows up quickly and show he can do this job or he’s out of here. Their verdict on Reese is pretty clear cut and even Mara should see that now.
The only way forward is to realize the whole organization stinks. EVERY scout, player, coach, executive, etc needs to be clearly evaluated without he rose colored glasses. They claim to do that but it is now very clear that Mara has drunk the kool-Aid and deluded himself. The bottom line is John has become his father without realizing it. If he continues to delude himself we are screwed as fans. If he sees he forest through the trees things will get better. This off season will give us the answer. We needed the crash and burn its the only way.
You guys remember 83 fondly
Dave on the UWS : 10/13/2017 8:46 am : link
Yes there were a lot of pieces in place but Parcells seemed over his head and there were no indications of what took place 84-90. Maybe this season makes Mac grow up and understand how to be a HC.
I think it's more similar to 2003
Jay on the Island : 10/13/2017 9:37 am : link
We had high hopes going into the season as the Giants offense was explosive during the previous season. There were concerns about the offensive line going into the year and that was the reason for our downfall leading us to trade for Eli. I expect history to repeat itself where the Giants will take a QB in round 1 and then follow that up with a guard in round 2.
The 1983 Giants
fansince71 : 10/13/2017 11:16 am : link
Were a Drug Infested Bunch, look it up, read about it.

Hence the massive roster turnover between 1983-84. In fact guys were released/waived during the 83 season due to it.

They also had 39 fumbles and 31 INT's...also over 100 penalties.
what would you rather have as a fan?
idiotsavant : 10/13/2017 11:54 am : link
Smoking cigarettes, snorting coke, drinking beer in the locker room, and yet fighting like warriors, like men, on the field, even when....especially when...loosing on the scoreboard (1983)

or

Yoga, tofu, fancy headphones, %1,000.00 shoes, and quitting, running, whining and shaking cute tushy off to private jets and running away - once the loosing starts?
.
