Who should be first off the bench, if the Denver game is a blowout?
Let's face it, Geno is only on this roster, because he was insurance for Eli, where he could play a few games until Eli returned, if injured.....keeping us in a better position in the standings, if he could manage a win or two, with our vaunted defense.......
But that ship has sailed, along with the season....I think it's much more important to know what Webb has, before we go into the draft next year, than to let Geno get some playing time....
If this team basically tanks it for the rest of the season, and we are in the 1-3 range for a pick, then the decision has to be made whether to use that pick on a qb, or another position...
If we go QB, then there is no reason for keeping Eli....best move is to trade him to a team he is willing to go to, creating cap space for the OL replacements....
Eli still has something left.....if the right team comes knocking, it's win-win for the Giants and Eli....he does not want to be in Kurt Warner's shoes......
But I'd like to see him against that defense.
I don't care how bad the offensive line or skill position players are. We need to see what he can do in a real regular season environment.
I doubt you're getting an accurate reading on what ANY qb had to offer in this offense.
Eli has very little mobility. His pocket presence is not what it used to be.
Look at Stafford against us. The pocket collapsed, he burst for a few yards, and slid. Eli doesn't have that burst, so he just takes the sack.
Webb is younger with way better mobility, I would like to see him come and see how he deals with some adversity. There is never going to be a perfect opportunity to throw someone in at Qb.
Either way Webb comes in as relief in last 3-4 games.
If Webb is long term answer (is he mobile?) Giants will sit in great draft position. Trade high pick for veteran OL and numerous draft picks.
If not.... hello 3 year rebuild
If the Giants are getting blown out and want to save Eli, then Geno should come in.
Here are your inactives for Sunday night: Jonathan Casillas, Romeo Okwara, Paul Perkins, Weston Richburg, Sterling Shepard, Olivier Vernon, Davis Webb.
I'm not sure it even matters anymore at 0-5, but if we were 2-3 and still in the running to have a meaningful season... and you thought that Eli was hurting the team, then you could consider making a change.
In that case, I think you go with Geno but even that choice comes down to whether you think he has any chance of resurrecting his career. I am not as down on Geno as most here are. He's got a good arm, he is mobile and he is still young. If he could harness his talent and cut down on the dumb mistakes, he could be something worth considering long term... thus getting him some reps now and trying to win games might make sense.
but... considering where we are (season down the tubes) then the question is: do you think Geno has any shot of resurrecting his career?
if you are convinced Geno is a waste and not worth the effort, then it makes more sense to go directly to Webb so you can see if there is anything there to get excited about and build upon. It's not realistic to think he'll save the season but better to lose with a young potential future QB earning reps rather than a vet whose expiration date is showing.
As the season progresses, you don't sit a franchise quarterback like Manning. I see a benefit to getting Webb a series or 2 which may progress to more through out the season. You give him a chance of some success while seeing what he has. It can be rationally communicated to Eli that you are our quarterback but with our draft position it is hard to pass up a top QB in the draft and it is in his best interests for them to see what Webb has. (A top 5 pick in the draft needs to replace Eli next season, a 3rd round pick (Webb) can wait seasons.)
Is it possible to do that? I think it is if there was talk from someone who is going to be there long term. That is a good reason why at minimum, Reese needs to go now. I think Gettleman could have that conversation and would have the credibility.
