Girardi has to protect Judge and make a fuss about these low strikes.
Girardi needs to bring it up in the press conferences. Say something like Judge is not getting a fair strike zone. The New York reporters know the umps are flat out taking the bat out of Judge's hands. Give the writers something to write about. The league office doesn't want bad press. It is not one bad call once in a while. It is at least one call every at bat.
but this team needs to start making some more contact. They can't keep striking out 15 times a game. Spending 3 and a half hours watching them swing at that garbage all night was not pleasant. Thankfully we finally get someone tomorrow night who actually throws the ball over the plate once in awhile. Yes we got our usually fucking of balls called strikes but tonight it was on us swinging at way way way too many crappy 3rd strikes. Damnit its frustrating to hold this team to 2 runs and like 6 baserunners and lose!
RE: RE: Umpire isn't swinging at sliders 8 inches outside the zone
Im not all that impressed with Houston. The Yankees were still hungover. If Verlander doesnt pitch well, the Yankees are going to push their shit in and go back 1-1
You clearly haven't seen much of them. Yanks blew a great chance at stealing this game in Houston. They have the best offense in baseball, we'll be lucky to keep them to 2 runs a game.

you apparently haven't watched much of the Astros. Very deep lineup. Much better hitting team than Cleveland. Can explode at any time. Disappointing the Yanks didnt win tonight with Tanaka holding them to 2 runs. You don't hold Houston to 2 runs very often
I watched them. I see 2 guys who hurt you in Altuve and Correra. The rest can be pitched to. Houston can't win a slugfest against the Yankees because the Yankees pen is much more likely to stop the bleeding than Houston's will. Let's see what Verlander does tomorrow. If he has a bad start, unless Sevy is dogshit, Houston is in a lot of trouble tomorrow.

Girardi out there yucking it up with the umpire between innings about the roof. How about maybe mentioning how fucked his young superstar is getting AB after AB after AB. It was good to see Smoltz and Buck mention it late
RE: RE: RE: Umpire isn't swinging at sliders 8 inches outside the zone
He's not throwing garbage. He's making excellent pitches that look like strikes but are unhittable because they drop off so much. Many of them have late action.
I hate his stupid beard, but he doesn't have a .70 postseason ERA (4 starts) and a Cy Young to his name by accident.

It's not an accident at all. He has deception and excellent command. If hitters are screwed into expanding the zone because he is getting bonus inches in each direction it's game over.
downplay Houston's offense all they want but they have the 4th best wRC+ since 1900. The entire lineup puts in work.
Houston has a good offense, they have some names and guys who put up numbers. But I don't see a mid 1990s Yankees or Indians offense here. And Hinch knows his pen blows. He left beardo out there much longer than you'd figure in a game 1 and went right to his closer with 5 outs to go, and effectly burned him out for tomorrow. They went to Verlander in Game 4 because he knew they'd blow the game in Fenway. The odds of their pen holding the Yankees offense down for more than 6 outs is extremely low. The Yankees pen is fully loaded tomorrow. I'll stand by what I said. They need a big start from Verlander or they are going to get hammered. And Judge and Sanchez are ticking timebombs. At some point, someone is going to pay.

I also think his pitches move so much they fool the ump too...many of them look like a strike, maybe they break late a few inches off the plate, and thats part of why he gets a lot of calls.

You're absolutely right. It's the late movement that is fooling these guys so bad... It's not garbage. It's just frustrating. You've got to expect it after a couple times through the order.
We were supposed to be scared shitless of Cleveland too, right?
Houston could sweep us for all I know, but I like the pitching matchups going forward, and I like our pen a lot better than theirs. I expect a long series.
Never get the benefit of the doubt on close pitches. Just the way it is. A guy with a good eye like Joey Votto is going to get ball four on the same pitch that is strike three to Judgez.
That and he is young. Vets get the calls, not rookies
Judge had 3 really good PAs in the game, yet was totally

Judge led the league in walks. He has a good eye and knows what's a strike is and what isn't. He and Girardi would be well served at this point to have a quick word with an umpire because at least 5 of these strikeouts have been from the bat being taken out of his hands.
And its called a ball
He then throws the same pitch 3 inches outside... and because it hits the catchers glove its called a strike.
Keuchel is very much like a poor mans glavine/maddux type who forces guys to expand the zone. You cant swing for the fences with that type.... you have to sit on offspeed and be happy to move runners along.. especially when its clear he is on. If hes not on thats another story
marks for offense in the post season. The strikeouts are coming at a record pace, and we still haven't gotten a single base hit from the DH slot. Judge is almost an automatic out in the 2 spot. Ugh. Gotta break out.

Judge had a hit and a walk. And got screwed out of another walk. How's that make for an automatic out? The pitchers refuse to throw him pitches in the strike zone and continue to get rewarded by bullshit strike calls.

If you say so. I think the Yankees blew an opportunity yesterday.
They had little opportunity. It was a pitcher's duel against one of the best in the league who was on his game. Bird made a bad roomie mistake on the bases which likely would have been 1 run, but there is no guarantee they would have scored again that inning.
Maybe. If you hold Houston to two runs you'd hope to win the game. However, this was always going to be a very difficult game to win. Keuchel dominates the Yankees and he had his best stuff. You also have to take a game 5 hangover into consideration. It's extremely tough to bounce back from a game like that immediately. And the Yankees didn't do the one thing they need to do to win this series, get to the Houston bullpen. That is the weakness of their team.
I never had much hope for game 1, they had a lot going against them. But I completely expect them to win tonight. And in the aftermath, watch as Kate Upton hops on the Yankees charter for the flight to NY, leaving Mr. Verlander laying in the fetal position with his thumb in his mouth, crying that he wants his mommy.
he's still hitting .148 with around 20 strikeouts in the post season. I'm not bashing him, just pointing out offensive struggles in the post season. I certainly want to see them turn it around.

Very hard to hit when:
1.) At least one pitch per AB is called a strike that isn't
2.) You refuse to take the belt/thigh high outside pitch to right/right center
He isn't the only one - Sanchez and Castro are basically doing the same thing...
Not just here, but in the media as well. People look at a box score, see the strikeouts, and say he's struggling.
It's not like he's free swinging, seeing 3 pitches and sitting down. He's still walking, and still getting to a ton of 3-2 counts. He's gotten boned on as few of those strikeouts.
As mentioned, I think Girardi needs to talk to the umpires about the bs strike calls and stop rewarding pitchers for being afraid to pitch to judge.
I, and others, are suggesting that if Judge won't make his case to the umps, then Girardi should step in and make a bit of a fuss and let it known that he's irate about it.
Managers/coaches across all sports have been doing it since the beginning of sports. If a star player is getting consistently mistreated, sometimes you have to make a public appeal or a public show of it to put pressure on the umps.
Can't think of another pitcher who would be more effected from an electronic strike zone than Keuchel. All pitchers at times may get a little help from the ump. But, come on. Every time the Yanks play him the strike zone has expanded.
Good thing that Verlander signed with Astros, or if he were on the Yankees he would have been taken out in the seventh to fit Joe's formula . Robertson was great but had to hand the ball over to Chapman to fit formula. Let the best pitcher stay in until he is in trouble.
