How different would things be

If instead of firing Coughlin, keeping Reese, and promoting McAdoo... at the end of 2015 Reese had been fired, Coughlin was kept as head coach, and McAdoo had been hired as a HC somewhere else.
Give it up

Coughlin was getting blown out of games a creating ways to lose for years after the last Super Bowl. He was past his expiration date. There’s a reason he’s not coaching anywhere right now.

That tends to happen when your talent is depleted by a GM who his bad at drafting successful NFL players.

Also what evidence do you have to support any of that, or is that just your personal bias?

You could make an argument that Gilbride was pushed out unfairly.

That was an dynamic if unreliable offense.

I wonder what gilbride could have done with odb

You do know Coughlin is the executive VP of football operations with the Jaguars right?

How much actual coaching does that entail?
Things would be worse
Vanzetti : 10/14/2017 1:41 am : link
Coughlin would likely finish 6-10 instead of 2-14 that Mac is heading for.

And Giants would still be on the merry go round
I'll play...

Instead of finishing 11-5 last year the Giants finish 5-11 and Coughlin gets fired one year later.

Does the GM tell the team not to score a TD when they're up 3 against Dallas with time winding down, or is that on the coach? Does the GM tell the QB to throw the ball through the back of the end zone rather than take a sack, thereby stopping the clock and preserving enough time for Romo to drive down the field for the win?

Does the GM decide to go for it on 4th down, up 10, in the 4th quarter against the Jets instead of kicking a chip shot field goal to go up 13 with under 9 minutes to go?

Coughlin deserves to be revered by all of us as a fanbase for the two Super Bowls he delivered, but let's be realistic - he made some incredibly questionable coaching decisions in his final season. And don't kid yourself - Coughlin had plenty of say in the roster. He wasn't an innocent bystander on that front either.

HomerJones45 : 10/14/2017 4:53 am : link
Still clinging to the theory it was all his fault in the face of the crash and burn engineered by Frick and Frack.

Had a competitive team in 15 with the shit roster Jerry produced. Oh yeah, no way would we have won 11 games with a 200 million dollar defense with anyone except the great Benny.

He turned down two coaching gigs. Khan told him "sounds like you want to run the whole thing". After being tied to the incompetens in the GM suite, yep that was the case.

Doesn't matter now. Past history excep the same nitwits are still telling us what should be done to fix it.

Not taking the sack was 100% on Eli IMO. He wasn't some rookie QB and should've known better.

The rest of those decisions were pretty much because TC knew he had shit for D and had to try and win with his best, which was on O. No question in my mind if he had the 200million dollar D, he makes different decisions there.

Here's a bitter thought.

Reese is on everyone's shit list here now, but I'd guess his resume still has appeal across the league. No doubt he will get another job.

How nuts will this place go if both Coughlin and Reese achieve playoff success before the Giants do?

There are twenty teams who have worse G.M.'s. this team had 6 first or second all pro players last year.
Doesn’t matter
Painless62 : 10/14/2017 7:47 am : link
Those pro bowl players are really making a difference . The fact remains we have the most unbalanced and probably weakest roster in the NFC East, along with a HC who isn’t great at being a HC or an offensive coordinator . The defense is back to crap again. We have as many holes in the team as we did a few years ago, with too much cap space taken up by non contributing players. If the ownership could ever do what is correct by bringing in outside talent at the GM spot, there is a chance we can rebound in a year or two. Business as usual and we are sunk. Fresh perspective is needed. There is a reason why inbreeding isn’t always the best.

Loss at Dallas Coughlin s final season?

A loss that set the tone for the year. Also how well did he handled the OBJ Josh. Or an thing.
Coughlin didnt have a chance to win his last three years

Nobody would have with the quality of those teams. That he kept them in many of those games spoke volumes about how good a coach he was . He left with considerable bitterness toward Mara. Don't let that Irish Wake fool you. Tom was seething . He admitted as much when Mara let Reese go on that one-day spending orgy. What was it? Twice as much money shelled out in eight hours than in the previous 4 seasons combined? You've got to be shutting me.

In particular, Gatorade Dunk disappoints above. Eli told Jennings not to score . Coughlin knew nothing about the decision . But such is to digress. Tom was getting up there in years. It was going to stop soon for him. The way this question should be posed, if you want to play counter-factual, is what would have happened had Coughlin been Coach-GM of the Giants?

Coach looks great. He's tanned and relaxed. Being VP Operations means he can do things like go to the 10-year reunion of the 07 champions . He was at the Dome last week , yucking it up with Floyd Little, his college teammate. He doesn't have to put in 70-hour weeks during season , anymore .

It's pretty cool actually. His last work product will be helping to return the Jags to prominence . That process began with the hiring of Doug Marrone .And although I hate the fact that the Giants have become a fucking joke, I do appreciate what it's doing to Mara, who is richly deserved of this wonderful season.

The previous owner of the Jags admitted that firing TC was the biggest mistake of his life. Now the House of Squint can live with the fact that what was feared-returning to thr joke status that his father had once rendered the franchise-has been realized .

"Tom had enough chances to win." PS Not really .

Coughlin is the reason things are the way they are
arniefez : 10/14/2017 8:51 am : link
right now. As Mara said when he fired him, Coughlin had more input into the roster than any head coach of the Giants has ever had. If he was still the coach last years 11-5 would have been 5-11 with his game management.

The two super bowl seasons are the outlier. Those are the only years he won a playoff game in his last 15 years of coaching. He ran Jacksonville into the ground before he was finally fired and he did the same thing with the Giants.

.531 winning percentage. 13 out of his last 15 years without a playoff win. 19-29 his last 3 years. It was past time for him to go.

Retro,

I know you're a loyal fan of Coughlin, and I certainly respect your opinion in general (and have for years, as you know), but if you don't think (or choose not to see) that TC had lost a few MPH on his fastball in his final season, we'll have to agree to disagree. Nothing wrong with that, either - we're just seeing it from different angles.
