“DISCUSSING ELI MANNING
On Monday, Daniel Jeremiah of the NFL Network tweeted: “If you’re Tom Coughlin/David Caldwell, would you make a call to Giants & ask what it would cost to acquire Eli Manning?”
The Jaguars should “go for it,” and explore what it would cost (in draft picks, not current players) for the Giants to consider it and if Manning would be open to it. The Giants are 0-5 and should position themselves for QB Derby 2018. The Jaguars (3-2) are in position to win the AFC South, a chance they haven’t had in years. They should pounce on the misfortune of the their division rivals.
Manning’s 2018 cap number is $22.2 million but if the Jaguars acquire him, they would not have to potentially pay more than that for a veteran free agent or trade a first-round pick for one. That way, they could still draft a young passer in rounds 1-2 next April.
Manning would arrive here energized to be in a playoff race and knowing he can lean on Leonard Fournette and the Jaguars’ lights-out defense.
Why it would not make sense: The Jaguars should want to keep their full cupboard of 2018 draft picks in case they want to make a move up in the first round to take a quarterback. In this year’s draft, Kansas City traded its 2017 -18 first-rounders plus a 2017 third-round pick to Buffalo to move up 17 spots to take Patrick Mahomes. A reasonable offer: A 2018 third-round pick and a conditional 2018 pick (the more success the Jaguars have this year, the higher the pick) for Manning.
It is unlikely to happen, but fascinating to talk about.”

“3. Let me expand on the above thought about Reese and the Giants. I don't think Reese is particularly good at his job, and the proof is in his drafting. Sure, he hit on Odell Beckham, Jr. and Landon Collins. Who else has Reese landed recently? My belief is that much of his success since taking over as general manager in 2007 is due to having Eli Manning in place.
Reese is a good judge of defensive talent and has landed guys like Johnathan Hankins (2013), Landon Collins (2015) and Dalvin Tomlinson (2017), but he was handed the hardest position to scout (quarterback) and the team has regressed on his watch. Despite spending big money in free agency last season to land Olivier Vernon, Damon Harrison and Janoris Jenkins, the team remains winless. You can't blame all of that on injuries at wide receiver.
Reese's inability to properly evaluate offensive linemen—misses like Ereck Flowers are killing the line—or valuate linebackers has put the team in a desperate situation. Missing on Flowers, who I had a late third-round grade on, and what appears like a serious reach for Eli Apple at pick No. 10 overall in the 2016 draft (he was ranked No. 35 on my board) is why the Giants are 0-5 right now.”

Hugh McElhenny says he can no longer take long trips. At 88, however, the Hall-of-Fame running back, nicknamed “The King” for his dominance, can still journey down memory lane from his home in Henderson, Nevada.
That was clear Wednesday when McElhenny, still very sharp, shared stories three days after the death of his dear friend and decorated teammate, quarterback Y.A. Tittle.
At moments during the phone interview, McElhenny’s voice sounded thick with emotion. But there was laughter, plenty of it, as he recalled the fights, and trips, and glory he shared with Tittle, an Atherton resident who died at 90 of natural causes after dealing with dementia late in life.
“He was just a born competitor,” McElhenny said. “So dang competitive. But he was a very solid man. A good man. And it’s just terrible. I guess it was just good old age. We’re all getting there.”
Asked about his most indelible memories of Tittle from their days with the 49ers, however, and McElhenny laughs and recalls their two major arguments.
In 1952, McElhenny’s rookie season, the 49ers were playing the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds. He says Tittle called four consecutive plays in which he put him out at wide receiver and had him sprint deep downfield to clear out underneath routes for Wilson and Gordy Soltau.
“God, he did it four times in a row,” McElhenny said. “And he called it again and I just walked off the field. We called time out. The coach didn’t know what to do. I said, ‘I’m too tired. I can’t go out there and do another 50-yard sprint.’ So that was our first disagreement.”
