NFL

Volin Boston Globe: Sunday Football Notes: Why are these four veteran quarterbacks sputtering?
Code:

“Eli Manning — Manning is hardly the only problem in New York with the Giants at 0-5. The offensive line is a mess, the receiving corps is decimated by injury, and Ben McAdoo might be buried too deep into his oversized play sheet to be a functional head coach.
But Manning, 36, hasn’t helped matters. The Giants should have been a playoff team, yet they’re 28th in scoring (16.4 points per game) and unable to push the ball down the field. Manning is sixth in completion percentage (67.8) and ninth in passing yards (1,338), but he’s 24th in yards per attempt (6.6) and 28th in average completion (9.8).
In other words, he’s completing a lot of short, high-percentage passes that aren’t moving the chains or getting the offense anywhere. Manning has just nine completions of more than 20 yards this year, 28th-most in the NFL.
The Giants’ winless start, combined with Manning’s age and shaky play, has created talk of the Giants trading Manning after this season (Jacksonville, with former Giants coach Tom Coughlin, is the obvious landing spot). Manning is under contract for two more years after this season for a total of $33 million, but none of it is guaranteed, and with no dead money on the salary cap. It’s a very tradeable contract.
But while the Giants did draft Davis Webb in the third round this season, they likely don’t view him as any sort of answer, long or short term. If the Giants can land a top-two pick this year, then they must seriously consider drafting a quarterback and moving on from Manning (maybe after one more year).
Otherwise, the Giants will have to cross their fingers and hope that Manning’s current performance is just a blip on the radar. Even at 36, he still could have several good years left.”

Gramling MMQB: It’s Time to Worry About All Those Hits Brady Is Taking, Big Ben Will Be Fine, the Giants Have No Good Choices
Code:

“Aside from having a good cry, there isn’t much the Giants can do at this point. When they have everyone healthy, they’re one of the 10 best teams in football. But the way they’re built, Odell Beckham Jr. is more valuable to them than any non-quarterback is to his team.

Beckham might simply be the most talented non-quarterback in the NFL—you could argue Antonio Brown or Le’Veon Bell, Rob Gronkowski, Julio Jones, Travis Kelce, etc. But the way the Steelers, Patriots and Falcons offenses are designed, they can scheme around the absence of their star. The Giants can’t. Ben McAdoo’s offense relies heavily—almost wholly—on isolation routes, asking receivers to beat the man (or, in Beckham’s case, men) covering them. Beckham is capable of doing that. Brandon Marshall doesn’t separate but can at least make contested catches. Rookie tight end Evan Engram might become a guy who can consistently win his matchups but he isn’t a No. 1 option now. And, oh, they can’t run block. At all. So, even if things were otherwise going swimmingly, the Giants were ill-equipped to handle a Beckham injury.

Of course, things are not going swimmingly. They’re going quite drowningly, which is a word I just made up to serve as an antonym for swimmingly. The defense, which stood on its head to make this a playoff team a year ago, has slid back, and now it looks like the Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie situation is the first public sign of mutiny. And, as our Albert Breer wrote earlier this week, it could be traced back to Ben McAdoo’s handling of Beckham and the precedent it set.

I know there have been a lot of people traveling the multiverse, coming back with reports from a dimension in which Tom Coughlin is coaching the Giants to a 4-1 start this season and in which people still say “radical,” but unironically. I’m not sure how Coughlin would have worked out in the long run though. It was under Coughlin that Beckham had the meltdown against Josh Norman two seasons ago, which started the whole “Odell Beckham is a loose cannon, always firing cannonballs everywhere at everything all the time so watch out if you don’t want to get brained by a cannonball there, fella” narrative. I’m not going to say McAdoo handled Beckham well, but it was an exceptionally tough spot. Because of roster problems—missed picks on the offensive line (rhymes with “Derek Schmglowers”) the lack of a dynamic running back and the unthreatening group of receivers complementing Beckham—McAdoo’s system quite literally does not work without Beckham.

So, what now? The 2017 season is surely lost and they’re about to be humiliated on Sunday Night Football in Denver. They have an upcoming decision on Beckham, who is a true franchise player with the potential to be a once-in-a-generation star from a marketing standpoint. Is he too much of a headache? Maybe he would be if you had a system that wasn’t 1,000% reliant on his otherworldly talent. If you’re going to move on from Beckham, you have to move on from McAdoo because his system is hopeless without Beckham. And if you let McAdoo go, are you going to ask Eli Manning, who has been a good quarterback over the last five seasons (I know, I’m a nerd because I didn’t say Eli’s bad), to pick up a new system at age 37? (And wasn’t the whole point of pushing Coughlin out to retain McAdoo that you wanted continuity for your veteran QB?) And, after investing all the money in building an elite defense, are you going to spend the next couple seasons rebuilding under a new coach with a new quarterback who, if acquired with a high 2018 draft pick, is a coin-flip proposition in the long-term and far less likely than that to be as good as Manning in the short-term?”

Princiotti Boston Globe: Bill Belichick in a talkative mood ahead of Jets game
Bill Belichick gave a 587-word dissertation on practice squad construction.
“We’re not expecting teams to draft guys in the third round to release those players, so later draft choices and free agents. We identify those players on the other 31 rosters going into training camp,” Belichick explained. “Here’s four or five guys from each team, let’s call it, that are based on the position if they don’t keep all of the players at that position then somebody is going to be out there whether it’s a player from the draft or maybe it was a veteran player. Who knows? Whatever that position is. So, [Director of Player Personnel] Nick [Caserio] and [Director of Pro Personnel] Dave Zeigler and his scouts track those guys throughout the league and we kind of monitor them and the guys that are available we follow up on.”

10-15-33 Giants 56 Eagles 0

“Scoring early and often, the Giants set a team record with eight touchdowns and 56 points. The New York Times game summary said: “the red-jerseyed New York team swept ruthlessly through the visiting eleven to register one of the largest scores ever made in professional football. The Giants gave evidence of tremendous power and fine cooperation, unleashing a running and passing attack that completely puzzled the Philadelphia congregation.”

The Giants eight touchdowns were scored by six different players: five were rushing and three passing, with Molenda and Kink Richards each going over twice. New York had totaled eight touchdowns in a game against Frankford in 1930 in a 53-0 win, but only converted five point-afters. This time the Giants were eight-for-eight. Jack McBride converted four placements, Strong two, Newman one and Hap Moran passed to Newman for one.”

10-15-39 Giants 27 Eagles 10

Brooklyn Daily Eagle;
“Toward the end of the second quarter and throughout the second half the Giants loaked every bit as good as they did in winning the National League championship last year. Their running backs really ran; Ed Danowski's aerials
went in the right direction and were caught; the line charged and smothered everything the Eagles tried, and what Is more Important, New York's pass defense upheld Its reputation by intercepting five passes in the second half for a total of six for the game. What the team showed
him after a poor start brought the first smile of the season to round Steve Owen's face. With the Chicago Bears coming to the Polo Grounds next week Owen had been plainly worried. After It was all over his only remark was, "You know the Bears are tough but I like to plav them."

O'BRIEN DISAPPOINTS Although the game became onesided in the final quarter the fans suffered only one disappointment. Many had been drawn by Davey O'Brien, the mighty mite of last year's T. C. U. eleven. O'Brien didn't play more than 15 minutes In all, but they are 15 minutes which he would be quite willing to forget. His first appearance In the lineup saw him the victim of a pass that gave the Giants their first touch down, O'Brien being sucked out of position on a Miller to Jiggs Kline pass. Davey came out of the game after that but went back in the fourth period with the Eagles In possession. Davey tried to pass five times.

Three times in a row he was smothered for a total loss of 25 yards and on two other occasions he got the ball away for Interceptions. Only one of O'Brien's pa-sses resulted in a Giants' score, Lunday intercepting on the 30-yard line and running the ball back to the eight. On fourth down Ken Strong droppe dback to the 19-yard line to kick a field goal to make the final count, 27 to 10.

43-YARD PLACEMENT Hank Reese put the Eagles ahead with a 43-yard placement early in the first quarter. It was the longest field goal of the season. Just when It looked as If the Giants were going to march to a touchdown In the second period Peets Barnum fumbled going through the line on the 29- yard stripe and Ted Schmitt, a guard, picked It up and ran 63 yards for a touchdown. Franny Murray added the extra point. The Giants went 61 yards for their first score a few minutes later. Two first downs and a Miller to Burnett pass which covered 34 yards put the ball on the Eagles' four. On the third down Miller tossed to Kline over the goal line. Hank Soar intercepted Dave Smukler's pass and ran 40 yards to a touchdown early in the second half and shortly after that Ward Cuff booted a field goal from the 38-yard line to put the Giants ahead, 17 to 10. Poole recovered Buckant's fumble In the fourth quarter to put Giants In scoring position, the Giants getting the ball on the 20-yard line. Leeman and Barnum helped bring the balr a yard away and then Barnum went over. Strong added the point.

to make It 24 to 10 and later kicked the field goal that made It 27 to 10. The Giants came up with their own band, a 50-piece colored outfit. , . . Jay Arnold, Eagles' back, took a couple of wild swings at Olant players during the game but couldn't connect . . Later the Giants took care of him . , , Ken Strong was knocked out during a vicious scrimmage but returned to the game . . . The Giants made 13 first downs to 7, gained 225 yards to 113 and completed 10 of 22 passes . . . Danowskl only completed 5 of 12, but Miller clicked on 3 of 6 . . . Smukler hit his target with 6 of 15 passes.”

10-15-44 Giants 14 Brooklyn Tigers 7

“The Giants offense struggled even more the following week as they gained a paltry four first downs in front of 25,854 fans at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn against the re-christened Tigers. New York completed just six passes on the day, but two were for touchdowns from the arm of Soar. The second came in the fourth quarter and lifted the Giants to a 14-7 win.”

Joe Geri kicked a FG and an XP, and threw a 58-yard TD to Elbie Nickel, as the Steelers upset the Giants, handing them their first loss.

10-15-61 Giants 31 Cowboys 10

The first ever meeting in Dallas between the Giants and Cowboys was a turnover festival with the two teams combining for 13 total (Dallas 7, New York 6). Both teams came into the game at 3-1.

Dallas jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a touchdown pass from Don Meredith to newly-acquired fullback J.W. Lockett.  The teams thereafter fought to a 10-10 tie at halftime. The Giants took a 17-10 lead in the third quarter, but the Cowboys drove deep into Giant territory. Dallas was threatening to tie the game at 17 when LeBaron tried to get a pass to Jim Doran and a Erich Barnes interception and 102 yard return for a touchdown broke the game open. . The score gave New York a 24-10 lead, and Dallas did not score again. A Cowboy record 42,000 fans turned out for the game...

“Fran Tarkenton's 59-yard touchdown pass to Joe Morrison off a razzle-dazzle triple reverse in the final two minutes gave the New York Giants a 27-24 upset over Pittsburgh yesterday in a National Football League game.

Tarkenton's scoring pass, his second to Morrison, came on the first play after New York's Clarence Childs recovered a fumble by the Steelers' Don Shy. The winning play started when Tarkenton handed to Ernie
Koy, who pitched the ball back to speedy Homer Jones. Jones lateraled to Tarkenton, who passed to Morrison all alone at the Steelers' 30. Pittsburgh led 24-14 going into the fourth quarter, but an interception by Bill Swain set the Giants up in Steelers' territory and Tarkenton took them 37 yards in nine plays to score. Tarkenton scored the touchdown himself, going seven yards with a lateral after Koy had apparently been stopped on a fourth down play. After an exchange of punts, rookie quarterback Kent Nix moved the Steelers across mid-field on a 37-yard pass to J.R. Wilburn. But two plays later, Shy fumbled and Childs recovered at the 41. There were two minutes left.”

10-15-72 Giants 23 49ers 17

AP:
“Running back Charlie Evans scored from four yards out with 1:31 remaining to give the New York Giants a 23-' 17 National Football League upset over the San Francisco 49ers Sunday. Evans' run caped a 43-yard drive in seven plays
after the Giants' Pete Athas Intercepted a John Brodie pass when 49er wide receiver Preston Riley slipped and fell. Following the Evans score, the 49ers moved from their own 20 to the Giant 25, but a last second pass from Bro-die's replacement, Steve Spurrier, was intercepted in the end zone by Athas as the gun sounded . Brodie was injured with just 33 seconds left in the on.”

10-15-78 Giants 17 Buccaneers 14

“Larry Csonka had a big day in his final appearance against the Buccaneers, gaining 56 yards on 13 carries and scoring both Giant touchdowns. The Bucs led 14-3 in the fourth quarter before suffering a meltdown with back-to-back turnovers. Both turnovers gave the Giants a short field, a Larry Csonka specialty. The Hall of Famer with the question mark-shaped nose rumbled seven yards for his first touchdown and blasted one-yard for his second.

Both Giant scores were set up by Hall of Fame linebacker Harry Carson. Early in the fourth, Carson intercepted a Doug Williams pass when the ball caromed off tight end Jim Obradovich near midfield. Carson returned the theft 30 yards, giving the Giants a first and ten at Tampa Bay’s 25. On the very next Tampa Bay possession, Carson recovered a fumble by Buccaneer tailback Louis Carter at Tampa Bay’s 12.

Carson’s great day also included eight solo tackles, six assists and a pass defensed. Days like this no doubt got Carson the Tampa Bay vote when Hall of Fame balloting came around.”

GIANTS' GAMBLES MAKE REDSKINS PAY, 20-17

“Seventeen of New York's 20 points were scored after gripping fourth-down conversions. On the game's opening drive, Coach Bill Parcells ordered pass rather than punt or field goal on a fourth and seven from the Washington 34, and quarterback Phil Simms's 13-yard dart to Mark Ingram set up their 3-0 lead. Trailing by 10-6 in the fourth quarter, Anderson broke Ravin Caldwell's shirt tackle on a fourth and one at the New York 42, leading to a Simms-to-Mark Bavaro touchdown pass (off a third-and-one run fake) five plays later. With New York leading by 13-10 in the fourth quarter, Anderson burrowed ahead on another fourth and one from the Washington 40 and collected the first down after an anxious measurement. Five plays later Simms (on a third-and-seven pass) found Odessa Turner in front of cornerback Brian Davis for an insurmountable 20-10 lead. "All those fourth downs? That just showed how Bill {Parcells} was thinking," Simms said. "We were going to come out and be aggressive." In the nervous second half alone, these Giants converted two fourth downs and six of 10 third downs, which is how they brought the Redskins to their knees. “

10-15-95 Eagles 17 Giants 14

“Philadelphia quarterback Rodney Peete had every reason to believe his third straight start would yield the Eagles' third triumph in a row -- it was counting to three that was the problem. 'You want to play, you feel all right, then your vision becomes blurred,' Peete said Sunday after the Eagles held on for a 17-14 triumph over the New York Giants in a game he left at halftime with a concussion. Each team used two quarterbacks as New York replaced ineffective starter Dave Brown and got an abysmal performance from Tommy Maddox, whose three second-half interceptions included one at midfield on the Giants' last chance to force overtime. After Philadelphia had rolled to a two-touchdown lead and the Giants settled for a field goal, Peete was in control with a 14-3 lead when he butted helmets with New York end Keith Hamilton. On Philadelphia's next series, Peete threw an incompletion and was sacked and left the game reporting wooziness. What he missed would have made his head spin as both teams self- destructed on offense to the tune of four interceptions, a lost fumble and a missed field goal, all in the second half. 'It wasn't the prettiest sight...”

10-15-00 Giants 19 Cowboys 14

Dayne Carries the Giants to a Win

“Giants Coach Jim Fassel had lost his star cornerback to injury and benched his top wide receiver. His special teams were in such disarray that a dropped snap, which did not result in a blocked kick, was a highlight. Twice he had turned to game officials to reverse a play via instant replay and twice the referee withdrew his head from the isolation of a sideline monitor and offered a head-shaking rebuke.
It was a gloriously warm afternoon today at Giants Stadium, but as Fassel stalked the sideline, his disposition was anything but sunny. And it was still just midway through the second quarter.

For the past week, the Giants had practiced a blueprint for a very traditional type of victory over the Dallas Cowboys. It featured punishing runs by the rookie Ron Dayne and turnovers created by an aggressive, blitzing defense. Now, with his team floundering in a scoreless game, came the test. Would the Giants stay with the game plan?
On the next play, a fourth down inches from the Dallas goal line, a play-action fake to Dayne froze the defense because he had already pounded away at them for 51 yards. That pause allowed Kerry Collins to roll out untouched and throw a 1- yard touchdown pass to tight end Pete Mitchell, who was wide open.

For the next two and a half quarters, the Giants' offense never looked adept or artistic, but it stayed with the plan. Dayne ran on, rushing for 108 yards and the winning touchdown in the fourth quarter. With help from a dependable, spirited defense that forced the Cowboys' Troy Aikman into five interceptions, the Giants held on to win, 19-14.”

Tiki's monster day helps Giants neutralize Falcons

“The good thing is we didn't get away from our running game
despite being down by 11 points," Barber said. "We did what we do
best, and that is running the football."

After Dunn's touchdown, New York scored on its next four
possessions, piling up 240 yards while holding the ball more than
18 minutes. The Falcons went three-and-out on their next three
possessions, doing nothing to help out their beleaguered, banged-up
defense.”

Biggest #Giants locker room issue from what I gathered in talking to players + those in building: McAdoo not connecting as he did in 2016

Feeling is McAdoo has not been as open with team collectively. Waiting to address DRC situation for 72 hours with players magnifies that

One Giants player's take to me this week: McAdoo has been so wrapped up in trying to fix the football, focus on player relationships dipped

Art Stapleton (@art_stapleton)
10/15/17, 7:51 AM
McAdoo lauded for his ability to connect with "millennials" + all signs were he worked very hard at that in Year 1.
Has evaporated in 2017

Art Stapleton (@art_stapleton)
10/15/17, 7:59 AM
McAdoo tried to rally #Giants w/ us-against-them message.
This week left more players feeling us-against-him situation. That's the problem.

Art Stapleton (@art_stapleton)
10/15/17, 8:08 AM
McAdoo essentially told us Friday the reason he did not discuss DRC with team right away: Sole focus is getting ready for the next opponent

Art Stapleton (@art_stapleton)

Ben McAdoo needed to make time in schedule btw Wednesday morning + Friday afternoon to address DRC situation with team. Big part of his job.

I think Giants brass gives McAdoo every opportunity this season to work his way through this and get the team back.
Can't predict right now.

Isn’t it bad when your whole offense is dependent on 1 player not playing QB? Dominant defense? What have they been watching? How about an offense built around many talented people and a sound scheme? How about a defense that truly has consistent talent and effort? Maybe even a really good LB or 2?

IF they can find a partner(s) for a trade(s) for marketable players in exchange for the likely midrounders as you mentioned we better get a GM that sees talent in those rounds because after first and second, our current GM and staff are exceptionally in SUCKland(and with 1 exception not too good in 1&2 either lately).
