I have been a high school official 22 years, 17 as a white hat.... Last Friday night I had one bad experience... 48 - 6 losing team with ball, 1:30 left in game (running clock due to 35 point deficit) On a 25 year pass play my back judge throws a brutal "Blindside block" penalty. Kid is down, helped to sideline, head not clear... The coach is screaming at my backjudge, "You can't call that!!" I go over to defuse the situation. He then jumps on me, "its 48-6, you can't call that!" You wonder why almost 30,000 less kids are playing high school this year..... Just venting here....
Semi-related to my second point, I hate when you hear the complaint like, "You can't call that in the 4th quarter" or "You can't call that in a tie game" or that officials shouldn't decide the game. Well, not calling something also determines the outcome. And to me, a penalty, foul, etc. should be called the same from the 1st quarter to the 4th qaurter, regardless of score, down, or distance. Period.
They were losing 18-2 with about 3 minutes left and after a call, the opposing coach rushes onto the field and screams in the refs face. Winning by 16 in a Fall tourney!

tourney this weekend. They have two seniors on the team and the majority of the players are 9th and 10th graders with five 8th graders playing. They went 3-1 and played in the championship game against a full varsity team that won the NC state title last year.

Parents suck. My daughter is coaching HS softball and she's had to tell off parents twice her age to stop yelling at players on their own team - parents who coached her in travel ball, no less.
+1 I was a youth hockey and soccer ref and stopped the former - parents were out for blood.
Yeah, probably more so because of the "head not clear" comment. Youth football participation rates are down because of the threat of injury; particularly the unknown causes of CTE.
