NFT: Mets: Ausmus and Ventura decline to interview

DanMetroMan : 10/17/2017 9:04 am
Mets will interview Callaway (my second choice) but I would be shocked if it's not Geren/Hale or Long.
Acta

I would be really happy with Cora or Callaway

but not holding my breath.

I'm fully expecting Geren or Hale which to me is just meh.

not surprised. The Mets are not an attractive job. Cheap, fucked up

Ventura
DanMetroMan : 10/17/2017 9:31 am : link
reportedly isn't sure he wants to manage again. Ausmus's decision was more mets centric. Supposedly it's Boston or bust for him. Wasn't interested in the Mets job.
John Manuel leaving BA to join Baseball America

Why would they even want Ausmus?

Considered to be hyper-intelligent and a potential "great" manager (not my opinion just what I've heard).

DanMetroMan : 10/17/2017 10:11 am : link
Red Sox have narrowed their list down to 2, expectation is Alex Cora will be the Red Sox next manager as early as the end of the week. We shall see.

Sox (per their usual style) took personal shots at Farrell on his way out the door. That may or may not be part of it ie hinting at something about him beyond W/L record.

I'm forgetting someone Ausmus is the only one with zero Mets ties they have spoken to. Callaway (if it happens) would be #2. Phillies supposedly have Callaway as their #1 choice.

They did the same with Francona and he's regarded as one of the top managers in all of baseball.

I see. well either way, true or not, the Red Sox MO is trash everyone on the way out, they even trashed Theo.

Larry Lucchino is a major narcissist and can't handle anyone leaving without trashing them and the media is their mouthpiece.

I don't think Sam Kennedy is as bad, but I'm not sure what Larry Lucchino's actual role is now.

Farrell

He's got some personal issues beyond this, as well. Or at the very least, there are lots of rumors about this guy being somewhat of a dirtbag.
The fact that nearly
ryanmkeane : 10/17/2017 10:37 am : link
all Red Sox fans and media dislike the guy, despite the fact that he won them a WS and back to back AL east titles, says all you need to know about the guy.
Word
DanMetroMan : 10/17/2017 10:38 am : link

John Farrell is available. The Mets need a manager, a source says there's no interest there.

Sounds like for whatever the reason it was totally shut down.
My
DanMetroMan : 10/17/2017 10:39 am : link
expectation is

Red Sox- Cora
Phillies-Callaway
Mets- Hale/Long/Geren
Tigers (less clear) but Fredi Gonzalez/Gardenhire/Kapler have all been mentioned.
What's the deal with Long?
ryanmkeane : 10/17/2017 10:41 am : link
I don't know much about the guy, but seems a bit odd they'd hire a guy who has been with the team for a few years and they haven't exactly been good offensively. Is he a likable guy?

Considered a smart guy who communicates with players well. Very little experience running a team. If they go with Long I presume it will be with someone like Wakamatsu next to him.

You have to filter all this stuff in Boston.

Jason Varitek had an affair with a NESN reporter (Heidi Watney) while still married and he's good enough to be considered manager?

John Lackey allegedly left his wife while she was suffering from breast cancer BECAUSE she had cancer.

but he doesn't get trashed (until he left) other than for his pathetic pitching.

Boston is a vicious place. I believe very little from the media that comes out when someone leaves.
Again
DanMetroMan : 10/17/2017 10:46 am : link
I have ZERO insight on Farrell. I was merely tying together the "rumors" with the Mets (through the writers) shooting down Farrell almost instantly. The two things can be totally unrelated but he was the only mentioned candidate they needed to let it be known "nope".

Metnut : 10/17/2017 10:48 am : link
Callaway. With Warthen gone, he'll hopefully be able to replace a level of expertise that the organization is losing. Also, he's part of an organization that has had a ton of recent success with a small market payroll which is something that the Mets are striving for.
Questions
Samiam : 10/17/2017 11:02 am : link
First, doesnít Anderson want a type of manager who will do what he tells him to di? Isnít that why Collins got the job in the first place? The better candidates wanted more control. In line with that, donít the Mets pay a manager on the low scale which is what they did with Collins at the start?
Players

Yup. Alderson wants a specific type of manager who is willing to listen to the FO directives so they want a guy they know they can communicate with + Alderson pre-Mets acknowledged his view of managers being somewhat "overvalued" and finally yes, the Mets do not pay market value for managers and Terry's willingness to take less likely was "part" of the original discussion.
Alderson wants a yes man...
Chris684 : 10/17/2017 11:16 am : link
Which is why Bochy told him to f off and went on to win 3 titles.

Which is why we hired Terry Collins who probably couldnt have gotten another job in all of MLB.

Which is probably why Ausmus is not interested and Cora will wind up in Boston.

And also why we will wind up with Hale, Geren or Long.

Yay Alderson.

They have only interviewed Long and have only 2 officially "scheduled" Acta and Cora so unless these are the final 3 there will be more scheduled shortly.

mlb.com (DiComo) says they have plans to interview Long (maybe done), Cora, Callaway, Acta and Joe McEwing.

McEwing
DanMetroMan : 10/17/2017 11:28 am : link
would be a terrible hire. Ventura likely would have been as well. Phillies will snipe Callaway watch.
Long
DanMetroMan : 10/17/2017 11:28 am : link

Long

Yup. I purposely didn't include Maddon because while he was horrendous the Rays roster was beyond horrendous back then. Even beyond what these other guys have dealt with. Maddon's first year in TB had had 4 starters with a sub .700 OPS.
Callaway

the shots taken were thinly veiled shots at his character/off field. Not wins and losses. I don't think anybody would have an issue with a manager's lack of winning being cited.

Alderson is well below average as a GM

The organization is a laughingstock , the last example being firing Ray Ramirez(an Omar guy) and keeping the great guru Barwis

Shecky may be hearing differently but someone with good info previously said internally the expectation is Long will be the next manager of the Mets.
