Five Things I think About the Giants Going Forward

Emil : 10/17/2017 1:04 pm
1. I think the Giants need to find a way to keep Justin Pugh. He is the Giants best offensive lineman, is versatile, and has proved he can hold his own against one of the top pass rushers in the NFL. His presence makes the rest of his linemates better, he is a positive presence in the locker room, and he represents the franchise well.

2. I think Sullivan needs to keep the play calling responsibilities. Since taking over as HC, even with a healthy all-pro WR, McAdoo’s offense has been inconsistent at best, and downright putrid at times. He is quick to abandon the run, and it is questionable whether his run scheme is effective anyway. He is extremely attached to 11 personnel, and has shown he is challenged to defeat cover 2 looks. Sullivan may not be an “offensive genius” for all we know, but his instincts are the antithesis of McAdoo’s. Simply put, Sullivan does not operate as though football is “basketball on grass” and is more along the lines of Coughlin in certain areas. He wants to establish the run, control the line of scrimmage, use play action to take advantage of the defense’s aggressiveness, and makes use of multiple personnel groupings. Without OBJ and other weapons in the passing game, it is unlikely that the Giants will set the world on fire offensively for the rest of the season, however, Sullivan’s approach is what the team needs to play truly complementary football.

3. I think fans need to take a breath regarding the offense going forward. It was great to see a running game, it was great to see some attempt at balance, and it was great to multiple personnel groupings. But don’t kid yourself, the Giants only gained 266 total yards of offense. The offense itself only produced 16 points. This team will continue to miss OBJ, but if it follows the game plan it had in Denver, it will win more of its remaining 10 games than it will lose, but it will probably win ugly.

4. I think Spags needs to keep the defensive line rotation he had at mile high. I’m sure the altitude had much to do with it, but it’s hard to dispute that the DL rotation and some fresher legs in the 2nd half, didn’t pay huge dividends on Sunday night. JPP was a terror, picking up three sacks and a fumble. Snacks played some inspired downs in the interior. And Kerry Wynn had the best game we’ve seen from him in years. Spags needs to keep the rotation going as much as possible. The Giants would arguably be 4-2 if they could hold a 4th quarter lead, and it’s hard to argue that a DL rotation wouldn’t help the team’s performance in the 4th quarter.

5. To keep his job, I think McAdoo needs to continue to focus his energy on being the HC. Aside from all the items mentioned regarding playcalling, it is clear the Giants have a fair amount of immature young players who don’t always do the right thing under pressure and don’t always behave in a professional manner. The last thing anyone associated with the Giants wants to see is a promising young talent like OBJ, Eli Apple, or Evan Engram get noticed for all the wrong reasons or create distractions. As the HC, you are the leader of 53 men, brought together for a common purpose. If McAdoo wants to keep his job, he is going to have show he is the man to do just that. A week ago, the Giants were a laughing stock. The biggest flop in the NFL. He probably won't be able to to get the team into the playoffs, but if he can right the ship and get the team to buy into being part of something bigger than just them, then he will have saved his job and salvaged the season.
very fair and reasonable analysis

what are you doing here ?
Id love to see Moss

Get the same amount of snaps he got last Sunday. He flashed a couple of times. Even when OV comes back, they need to keep these guys fresh to close the game out.
Agree with all

your points but regarding you point #3 keep in mind they were playing the top ranked defense in the league and in particular the top ranked run defense. So what has been our weakness went against their strength and won. I think that is great cause for optimism.

When Vernon returns, I hope to see him in for the passing downs as an extra pass rusher (rather than on the inactive list every week).

Very true, and fair point. But you can't blame me for being skeptical until I see it again.
I would like to add that Fluker should return next year
Rjanyg : 10/17/2017 2:38 pm : link
along with Pugh. Solidify the right side of the line. I would keep Jones at Center and let Richburg test the free agent waters. Flowers and Jerry are under contract next year as is Bisnowaty and Wheeler, who with a full year in an NFL weight room and practice experience can become solid depth. The draft can bring an additional OL or 2 and maybe become a viable strength of this team.

These are too many conclusions on Sullivan

After just 50 offensive plays. I feel like you're setting yourselves up for disappointment. It's easy to stick with the run when the other team isn't stopping it or scoring point. Let's see how he calls a game without an early 10 point lead.

I'd add, it's easy to commit to the run and multiple formations when you're playing without your top 4 WRs.
McAdoo had a year and 5 games

To call his own plays.

I think it's reasonable to let Sullivan have more than 1 game before making too many judgements. (good or bad)

BUT - I've seen enough of McAdoo (post Coughlin) to know I'd like to see someone else call the plays for a while.

Let's see where Sullivan takes it...
Great Points by all on Sullivan

I agree, we certainly should not crown him some sort of offensive genius, which I wrote earlier. The main reason I would stick with Sullivan is because he has a track record of striving for balance on offense and winning at the LOS. I just think his approach is more in line with what this team needs and what wins you football games in this league.
i think

we can all agree that the lack of offensive production last year and through 5 games this year were disturbing, as was mcadoos insistence on using 11 personnel and misusing or underusing guys (vereen, elison, etc). i am just not sure what mcadoo brings to the table as a HC or even as a playcaller offensive guy at this point, and its becoming apparent that he has really bad instincts in both player groupings and positions, as well as in-game management this year (i.e., foregoing fieldgoals and going for it on 4th down, etc.). it takes him til they are 0-5 and lose all of their starting WRs to make changes and tinker with the lineup? this shit should have been worked out in preseason. makes me question whether reese and the talent acquisition is the problem or if its the coach. i'm just confused at this point.
Let's see if Sullivan

can make the adjustments needed during a game, when teams go all out against the run and stop it......

Agreed.
The formula that worked against the Broncos won't work every week. Sooner or later, they're going to have to develop a passing game.
Sensible post. Wrong forum?

If other teams sell out to stop the run, and we start throwing... remember that our WR's are a pick-up crew. I expect Eli will be looking for Engram, Ellison, and Adams, but don't blame Sullivan if Eli's targets end up being Lewis-King-Egan-Rudolph.
