Ed Eagan - childhood friend of OBJ

Chuckstar : 10/18/2017 10:26 am
Interesting if not seen already. Here's what NFL 2016 draft profile had to say about him.

Pro Day Results
40-yard dash: 4.43 seconds (with wind)
Vertical: 34 inches
Broad jump: 9 feet, 10 inches
Short shuttle: 4.48 seconds
3-cone: 7.09 seconds
Bench: 6 reps of 225 pounds

Analysis

Strengths Slot receiver with kick and punt return experience. Returned two punts and two kickoffs four touchdowns in college. Rapid turnover in feet off the line of scrimmage and into routes. Consistent play speed in routes and does adequate job of selling them. Tight footwork allows for sudden stop-start quickness. Sinks hips into breaks and can slam on brakes and open quickly on comeback routes. Can elude first tackler after the catch. Not a classic hands catcher, but finishes his catches nonetheless.

Weaknesses Quicker than fast. Lacks the length and long speed to be a threat over the top. Needs more consistency of effort as blocker. Average acceleration out of break points and stems. Separation comes from footwork and not burst. Can be roadblocked from press coverage.

Draft Projection Round 7 or priority free agent

Bottom Line Eagan's ability to return kicks and punts could loom large as he attempts to fight for a roster spot this summer and into the fall. While Eagan might lack the size or speed to excite evaluators enough to draft him, scouts see him as a quality football player who has a chance to put himself in the mix for a roster spot if he can also convince a team that he has special teams value.

Article on his journey to the Giants.

He looked pretty comfortable handling returns

And he looks way better than Harris has looked the last year and a half.
Sometimes you get those bottom-roster guys
Beezer : 10/18/2017 10:33 am : link
who are solid human beings and they just come to work and grind. I'm not at all intimating that Eagan and the other guy I categorize this way (Rudolph) are all-pros. Just easy to root for. I hope they each make a great case for keeping them around, going forward.
seemed to have some burst or zip
idiotsavant : 10/18/2017 10:36 am : link
on that return, sped up towards end, rather than slowed.

Similar to gallman in that sense, looks to speed up.
I like the comment about his separation coming from footwork..
EricJ : 10/18/2017 10:42 am : link
he obviously knows how to run routes. Many fast guys do not get the separation because of their poor footwork. Cruz was not a burner but he was running crisp routes and was getting open in the slot. This guy could end up being a very effective slot WR if we don't screw it up.

Not saying anything yet, but there's a certain coach in New England who has a history of turning diminutive guys with heart into effective receivers.

Like a guy who would thrive in the slot for the Patriots. Why not for the Giants?

Agree. A HMWG who Belechick would put in the slot.

I hate the expression HMWG - not all WGs are HM and many players of different ethnic and racial backgrounds play with a high motor. two of the best slot receivers in giants recent history i.e. Cruz and Steve Smith were amazing high motor slot players.

Very true, but there is something about this Eagan that tells me he probably has great hands, he knows where the sticks are and is a smart player. Do we know if he's a coach's son?

Lighten up Francis. It's said in jest. You don't need a safe space to hide from this one.
He seems to have a good handle
GiantsRage2007 : 10/18/2017 2:29 pm : link
Catching punts. Al-be-it a small sample size, he looks like he has those soft hands that make catching a punt look easy. I'll take security over explosiveness in that area any time. Harris always seemed to have the ball almost bounce off him and/or he was loose with it. I guess I'm less nervous with this kid. Take that for what you will. :-)

McConkey's role as a returner was to catch the ball and not screw up. He wasn't a dynamic returner or receiver for that matter. This kid might be a little quicker and a little better.
I think he's better than McConkey ...
Manny in CA : 10/18/2017 4:45 pm : link

More in the mold of a Welker, Edelman, Amendola ....

Smart little guy that's very smart & quick, with just enough speed to be a constant pest. A perfect slot receiver.

but a 7.09 three cone and only 6 reps? Guy obviously plays better than his numbers

Move the chains.
If he can do that then the other guys can get the TDs.
If he can do that the other team's O is off the field.

Then don't ever watch "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines" or "Blazing Saddles". Throw in "The Producers". Of course I find all to be hilarious

I've never seen those movies, so I can't comment, but the HMWG thing is not funny, at all. there is a bunch of racist code you hear from announcers and commentators that is overwhelmingly attributed to white players such as "lunch bucket" player or "high IQ". it insinuates that white players succeed on smarts and efforts and by contrast non white players do not exhibit those traits and get by on natural athleticism.

And it's also been used sarcastically by Zak DeOssie and others to poke fun at the whole concept.

Never seen "Blazing Saddles"? Good Lord.
