My earliest baseball memory is watching the 81 World Series with him...I would have been 7 then...we know how that one turned out. Not going to jinx the current run by thinking about a rematch yet...
saw play, but Reggie is one of those. I don't remember much of my very early years as a fan, but I remember going crazy for Reggie (not in '77, though, I was a baby then). To this day I remember the first Yankee game I ever attended for one reason - Reggie was ejected for arguing balls and strikes after his first AB, and I was mortified. My first game and I wasn't going to get to see my hero bat again! When he was gone in 1982, it was baffling to me - can't expect a six year old to understand free agency. How could Reggie not be a Yankee anymore?

This, of course was all before his heel turn when he tried to assasinate Queen Elizabeth II.
I know this is part of the story that’s well known Â
but will always amaze me that Reggie homered in his final AB of game 5, walked on 4 pitches his first time up in game 6...then each of his 3 HRs in game 6 came on the first pitch of the AB, off 3 different pitchers...meaning he homered on 4 straight swings off 4 different pitchers to close out that World Series.
Legendary.

I know how you feel. I was 5 in 1977 when I went to my first Yankee game. I had already been to a Mets game. Reggie is the single most reason I am a Yankee fan today. Watching him take batting practice that day was amazing. Then when he was coming up the excitement in the stadium was ridiculous and I was sold.
I was furious when he barely played in the 81 Series and devastated when the Yankees didn't re-sign him. I hated Dave Winfield because of this, which made it very easy for me to root for Mattingly to beat him out in 1984. Reggie was the first and I think the last baseball player I really rooted for after leaving the Yankees. I was happy and angry at the same time when he went on to lead the league in HR his first year with the Angels. Besides hatred of the Sox, he was the reason I was pulling for the Angels in 1986.
For all his Ks, there are a number of today's players that make him look like a contact hitter.
Bronx zoo, so many interesting personalities and insanity, Reggie's three homers, for a kid there was nothing better. My grandparents were big Yankees fans and filled my head with all kinds of facts and information - people I never met or never watched, but who became my heroes.

With all the texts that roll in these days like a game thread, it's hard to imagine being alone with your thoughts and Howard Cosell...yikes.
