We may be looking at high teens. Maybe worse.
Baker is awful. If we cut him tomorrow would a single team pick him up? Lance is still awful. Frank? Let's just hope it was jitters. KP needs to work on moving the ball when he's covered. Hardaway needs to do more out there. There's just too many bigs - and it's going to get worse when Noah comes back.
One of the problems with Willy barely playing and Ntilikina Â
than I'm not going to bother tuning in. The future of this team is KP, Frank, Wily, and I guess THJr. That's the guys I tune in to watch, not freaking O'Quinn and Lance Thomas for God's sake.
any expectations. I also have a sneaking suspicion that I will lose interest after a week when scrubs like Thomas and Baker are logging minutes.
I’ve already given up on Hornacek. I hope Perry does the right thing and get all the useless veterans off the team.
I will root for Frank, but it will be annoying as all hell when Frank struggles to get minutes on this lousy team when other players we could’ve picked are making waves elsewhere.
Isn't going to play the vets in an attempt to win as much as he can to keep his job. Obviously I understand the desire not to get fired, but the young players need to play and I hope this is not the reason.
Maybe the Knicks are trying to drum up interest in kanter and oquinn Â
By playing them heavy minutes. They like gomez. I can't imagine they just soured on the kid before game 1.
Frank is going to need time. That's fine. KP looked unstoppable on offense. That's great. The tank is off to a fine start. That's good. Gomez barely played. Not good but maybe it's a temporary thing.
OKLAHOMA CITY — Center Willy Hernangomez, the young building block who was a first-team All-Rookie selection, found himself out of the rotation in the season opener Thursday versus the Thunder. As expected Enes Kanter started and Kyle O’Quinn got 22 minutes as the backup.
With 3:46 left, Hernangomez was put in during garbage time of the Knicks’ 105-84 season-opening loss. The Spaniard found out at the morning shootaround from coach Jeff Hornacek he wouldn’t be in the rotation and it’s about his lax defense.
“He told me be ready,” Hernangomez said. “I’m not worried about that. It’s the first game. I’m just mad we lost.”
“He knows I can score. I have to focus on defense, try to do defensive things. Coach wants me to put my mind on defense. I have to keep working on defense and hopefully the minutes will come.’’
Hornacek said Hernangomez is “not far behind.’’
“We have a lot of bigs,’’ Hornacek said. “KO and Enes earned the minutes in training camp.’’
If they're using defensive play as a barometer for gaining minutes on the floor, then how on God's earth, is Enes Kanter starting? His defense is horrific.
For the life of me, I could t u understand why they re-signed Baker Â
Bravo to Hornacek. This isn’t just about playing the young guys. As much bad can come from playing as it can good. Its about setting a culture, if Hernangomez is lacking with his effort on Defense, then he hasnt earned playing and this would only develop worse over time. This is a chance to set a new culture. If Hernangomez can learn to put equal effort on Defense now, he may develop into a real player over time.
Kanter is an experienced veteran who is a much better offensive player. He isnt being handed a job and playing time due to his age alone.

Other than KP (sort of said by djm)? I don't know I'm stretching. Has to be some explanation. Don't see Frank being a stud. Just not athletic enough for a PG. where was Hardaway and Lee?
bodies Lonzo, shuts him down (ONE game) and Lavar is already chirping like a moron. Your son got shut down by a premier defender. Accept it and shut up. It's ONE game.

i think eveeyone who guarss him is going to try and body him and be physical...
1. Development of KP
2. Tank
3. Development of Frank
4. Development of Willy
5. Collect additional assets for future
Since Frank is so young and raw, you could argue he doesn't need 20+ min a night this season and thus the tank is the #2 priority. You could also argue that highlighting some of the vets (Kanter, KOQ, Lee, etc) early on in the hopes that they flash enough to bring back a late first or some 2nd round picks is a higher priority than I have it listed. Move the roster waste, then get Willy/Frank more minutes.
Ron Baker was bad and frustrating to watch get that many minutes Â
everyone else different levels of mediocre to awful. When Kanter was in the game OKC was feasting on him. Westbrook getting passes to Adams for easy buckets with Kanter's head on a swivel
RE: RE: My sentiment remains the same as it was before the game Â
The kids need to buy into that, even when facing the fear of being embarrassed by fast breaks by star studded teams, those happen, may have to let them happen at times.
It would appear to be two games, when we grab a turn over, style A, and the more half court game, style B.
Lacking our turnover, it seems like young players get sucked into running back against scary teams and leave points unscored, things devolve, get wild, and that's not a great match up yet.
"kids"? Frank nor Willy really played and neither played at all when the game was somewhat close early. Not being snarky but when the game was "competitive" early the players on the court were Ramon Sessions, Hardaway, Lee, KOQ and KP. It's one game. So I'm not going to go bonkers but lets not look for positives that weren't there. KP was fantastic everyone else was either "mediocre", garbage or hot garbage. The "kids" didn't play.
game managed to be worse than anyone could have expected. Not the outcome (expected) but the lack of PT for Willy/Frank and the lack of good performances. Outside of KP getting hurt and or playing poorly it would be hard to script a worse game.
Bring in Baker, immediately start loosing turnovers, bring in Thomas, start loosing rebounds.
The Knicks have some good, athletic pieces that will fit fairly well once one decides not to play those types of guys...Nili getting up to speed will be huge.

which is a different problem, and one that falls om hornacek...
perry and mills when they decided to go with a youth movement should of sat hornacek down and said you play the young guys...
not looking to single out Kanter (because the team is awful) but I have a very hard time believing his weight was what held him back defensively. He seems confused on defense, doesn't even defend entry passes and seems mentally to be a tick slow in reacting. I'd 100% love to be proven wrong.
RE: RE: RE: RE: My sentiment remains the same as it was before the game Â
it is shit but they are finally rebuilding right way, i can deal with losing if they contonue to do it the roght way
it remains to be seen if they're going to rebuild the right way. Most, if not all, of the moves they made this summer indicate otherwise.
not really, thjr has improved and is under 25, he gets to what he did in preseason you got a good yoing player...
for kanter and mcdermotts warts they are both only 25 and both could be free agents..
they got a high 2nd
beasley is 28 on a 1 year vet contract..
sessions is here for 1 year as a placeholder..
jack will be gone in 11 games...
what move says they are trying to win now?
I didn't say they're trying to win now - I said they're not rebuilding the right way. If the Hardaway contract was such a sound investment, Atlanta would have matched. A guy like Beasley has no business on this team - I don't care how old he is or what his contract is. Saying Kanter/McDermott can be free agents only proves my point. Instead of prioritizing controllable pieces for Melo they brought in these two guys. Kanter clogs the frontcourt and is likely opting in next summer, thereby reducing cap space. If McDermott plays well, you get to pay him next summer or lose him for nothing! Yeah! An intelligent rebuild prioritizes assets, flexibility, cap space, etc. Instead, we have a team president who saw fit to give Ron Baker 2/10 with a player option.
be positive, OKC has savvy proven all star types Â
once our guys got off their game, it was easy pickings.
That said, keep the duds out and Knicks can find a 'Knicks style' that works. One hopes that coach, like coach here at NYG, was not under pressure to play duds like Baker and Thomas.
Sessions is a bit of a dud also. Not worried, though, I don't think they planned to loose a player early.
and according to hornacek it was because of preseason Â
yeah the optics on Baker were not good. Very, very sloppy for such a mediocre player. That said I think Baker should only be the primary ball handler when necessary, that's on Hornacek.
RE: and according to hornacek it was because of preseason Â
anyone who watched preseason and said oquinn played better than willy is a moron
and how does Willy improve his defense/defensive effort without playing? If the Knicks have ANYTHING of value this year it's the ability to really get a look at players and cycle through them.

A kid going out air balling shots is not going to help him. Maybe his knee was hurting him or he was overwhelmed by his first NBA game.
But he clearly wasn’t ready for more minutes.
And of course Frank wasn't ready. He played about five quarters of basketball since the draft.
But if the goal is draft position, then I hope Kanter and Baker start 82 games. It's not going to be a fun viewing experience.
Not happy to have him back and he did not change my mind last night.
Knicks big 3 - KP, Lee, THjr - yuck
Well, good thing we have college basketball
First quarter of opening night, Ron Baker covering Westbrook.
That says it all.
How is Felton still in the league? Would he be the best guard on the Knicks right now?

thjr played extremely well in preseason, it is one game
DeAndre Jordan 14 and... 24!
Austin Rivers with a sweet 26 minute 2 point performance
Markkanen 17 and 8 (5/12, 33 minutes played)
i think eveeyone who guarss him is going to try and body him and be physical...

fat Ray would be our undisputed starter at PG.

Beasley calling for the ball on one leg was hilarious.
KP was really good. Him stuffing Melo and that crazy floater in the lane were the highlights of the game for me.

it remains to be seen if they're going to rebuild the right way. Most, if not all, of the moves they made this summer indicate otherwise.
Hopefully he's just here long enough to be dealt off for an extra pick at some point.
Lance Thomas is a dud, seems to lag behind the action. Sessions is a meh.
Game seemed fairly competitive before they put Thomas and Baker in.
Seems like Kanter will come around once things start to sync.
Gotta get Nili ready asap.
