Often time when former players with high football IQs start out they are great and full of X and O incite that true fans love. But as time goes by the producers will ruin him and we will all hate him once again.
Should not go unnoticed, he is doing his best job this year because of Romo. Romo is good but there are a few things he does that any other play by play guy would have a tough time with.
He chimes in at awkward times. Right before a play he’s calling out the coverage and saying where the QB should go with the ball. Ok, your not at the line of scrimmage your in the booth, this should not be done all that much before the play , after is fine, let it breathe a bit. He gets way too excitable and tends to ramble. Right before plays in certain situations he will state something completely obvious real quick, such “ooo gotta snap it quick here!”.
These are not killer instances there are other things, but overall for basically a debut and not even half through he’s doing a lot better than I would have thought. The habits he has that aren’t going to work long term can be smoothed over or fixed in time.
I was not happy with this move CBS made cause of course I liked Phil Simms doing his thing, however it is now aparent to me it was the correct move. Simms had kinda gone stale some, he tended to repeat a lot of the same thoughts and phrases. The game has changed a ton since he played and he might not be totally into it anymore. I have heard the words insufferable be used to describe Simms the last few years by multiple people, he devolved into it cause he used to be great.
Romo is already better at this than most of what’s on including Gruden.
It should also be mentioned, I heard Mark “stink” Schlereth with Dick Stockton Sunday and he is a great addition to the Fox roster, I much rather have him on a game than Aikman who I just can’t stand anymore for numerous reasons. Also when Joe Buck is no longer broadcasting anything for Fox, I’m throwing a huge party.
Not really feeling the Romo love but the Chefs have been fun to watch Â
Romo’s kind of tough on my ears, talks a bit too much and seems sort of shrill. Tonight in Oakland he was yelling at the QBs, “throw it now” which isn’t something I think is very helpful from a broadcasting perspective. On the plus side, it is interesting to peer inside his mind. He talked about clock management tonight on the final Oakland drive, when to use TOs and what plays he likes to call in that situation. His presnap reads are interesting, and sometimes even more interesting when he isn’t correct. He kind of called some guys out tonight - said Lynch was silly to come off the bench and that Cooper needed to layout for a pass - but only kind of sort of called them out - and that’s kind of cool I guess.
To answer the OP, I’ve seen a lot of the Chefs this season, 4 really entertaining games. Love seeing this version of Alex Smith who I think is playing better than any other QB in the league right now. And the Chefs rookie RB Kareem Hunt is just the kind of back that I love to see play (and that Reese never seems to be able to draft). I know Hill isn’t an upstanding citizen but Football Jesus blessed that young man with some moves. If the Giants aren’t in the big game then wouldn’t it be cool to see Andy Reid beat the Iggles in the SB?

You had me up until the part about the Iggles being in the SB.
Agreed. You get the feeling that he's not just in the booth laboring through his job but that he's there enjoying the game along with everyone else watching.
but I think he will eventually get more relaxed and settle into the role.
I agree with this. He's excellent but he goes on and on even as the play is developing he's talking pre snap right trough to the whistle. He's great and his insight is second to none. He just needs to tone it down a little. See what I did there

I don't know where to begin with disagreeing with you...
First of all, I really enjoy hearing what Romo sees putting himself in the shoes of the quarterback at the LOS. Gives a great perspective and it's fun to watch how the play develops after that. Especially considering he's often exactly right even with things that seem very specific. He was spot on saying "Carr should run up and throw a quick fade right away, could maybe get three plays in if he does." That's exactly what Carr did and it went for a touchdown to Crabtree (which was called back). Then he's saying "they're obviously going to double Moore" and that's what happened . I don't know it reminded me of hearing Jeff Van Gundy in the last 2 min of an NBA Finals game (and I mean that in a good way).
I personally did not like Phil Simms as a color commentator. I often did not feel him bringing much value to the conversation compared to Collinsworth and Aikman. Sorry if this sounds sacrilegious but it's just true, if you think Phil was a good color commentator you are falling a bit victim to homerism.
Never understood the hate for Buck. He seems to know the most about football out of any play by play guy, he never sounds dumb or makes mistakes like Nantz and Michaels sometimes do, I've never seen him exhibit the supposed biases that many on here complain about.
I've never liked Nantz. The guy says some of the most pointless things and he seems to have the lowest football IQ of any play by play announcer. Michaels also doesn't seem to have a high football IQ but at least he's good for a witty play on words here and there.

He always seemed like a pretty nice guy. I'm glad things are going well for him.

during the game?
Only when a young QB correctly audibles out when the defense is showing blitz.
Loved the part last night where he talked about talking smack with while having a mouth piece in......then he did some grunts lol

He's excited by the game and informative , a plus in the booth as far as I'm concerned .
Absolutely agree. Did you see how he donated his first paycheck? Seems like he could another special player for the Texans.
