Even with the trades, the bullpen was still shaky. Gio shit the bed in game 5. Looking at their division, is any team more of a guarantee to win it than them in 2018? They're basically hiring a guy for 5 games when anything can happen.
It's amazing Dusty's track record as manager. Early success, brutal playoff losses, downturn, clubhouse problems, some success again towards the end, brutal playoff losses, fired. It's like a formula this guy uses everywhere he goes.
Nats just cut it off early, but I have no doubt that would have happened there too.
The Harper situation makes this a 1 year thing anyway so longevity isn't really an issue here. Maybe they can look under a pile of cigarette butts somewhere and find Jimmy Leyland.

The bullpen was much, much better after the trades, and they didn't blow the series. Rizzo could be blamed for expecting the bullpen to be decent before the trades, but he made the trades without giving up their prized prospects.
As to game 5, Scherzer and Gio aren't the same without their rest, I suppose. The team choked in two game 5s two years in a row. Dusty probably should have gone with Roark in game 5.
Dusty had to get out of the NLCS in order to keep his job.

I'm not convinced the Nats aren't going to throw $400 million at him. But if he wants to play with Bryant, then he'll be in Chicago.
Even though I was 110% behind the fire of Matt Williams, I was not a fan of the Dusty hire two years ago. But I really came to like Dusty a lot. Playoffs aside – which I blame mostly on the players, not him - he had the magic touch. They better have someone with some real grit to take his place or they could be in trouble.
Apparently it was against Rizzo's wishes, which is just incredible.

It was better after the trades, but it wasn't what a team needs to win playoff series. Game 3 was the pivotal moment. After he pulled Scherzer, Dusty needed to come out of the 'pen with a sledgehammer (D-Rob, Miller). For a team with such high expectations, they didn't get him that sledgehammer.
Obviously 98% of the teams don't have Miller and D-Rob, but a team that really wants/needs to get deep in the postseason has to make that happen. The Cubbies and Indians traded elite prospects in 2016 to make that happen.

I don't think you'll win many games with 3 hits. The only reason the Nationals got any runs that game was b/c the Cubs had 4 errors.

I think the Roark thing was a big deal. Even though the Strasburg thing ended up working out, Roark should have been in there even before or after Scherzer.

Has he said that he wants to play with Bryant? I mean, I'm sure he would, Bryant is talented, but I just haven't heard this as a thing. Harper will go where the money is, not where Kris Bryant is. There are young talented players all over the league that Harper can play with.

Yup. Didn’t use Tanner one damn time the entire series.

It's a rumor that Gammons floated last summer, but I agree he will go where the money is. No doubt the Nats will try to lock him up to a long term deal next season, but if it's not in the stratospheric range he'll hit free agency.
I know it’s really just semantics but dusty wasn’t fired. His contract ran out and they are not renewing it.
I blame the players for this seasons NLDS series except the times they pitched Solis. That’s on him.
Well, Dusty did make some questionable decisions in the NLDS. For one, despite fan love for Werth and Werth's contract being up, Dusty should have started Lind instead of Werth, in at least game five, if not in others. Lind's bat was hot and he is a good defensive player. I also think he should have started Tanner over Gio. And he should have pulled Scherzer the moment his outing in the 5th game started to go south.
Certainly the players are also to blame. I still have nightmares about how Werth, Turner and Taylor just watched a fly ball drop in front of them because they didn't know who would catch it. And their hitting was atrocious. But Dusty could have shaken things up a bit more and he chose not to. That's all on Dusty. I liked him as a manager and I don't know who they will bring in now but I am not terribly surprised that they didn't renew his contract.
way before I'd hire any of the losers and clowns Sandy is looking at.
Dusty has a .532 winning pct with 4 different teams over 22 years. Yeah, he has made some questionable decisions with the pen in the postseason so did Bobby Cox and Joe Torre
Plus, Nats were just not that good. Even if they got by the Cubs, they would have been annihilated by the Dodgers. Blaming Dusty is ridiculous.

Dusty would kill all the Mets pitchers. No thx
Right, because Collins and Warthen produced such a healthy crop of pitchers.

All five starters plus Lugo had arm injuries in the last 12 months. What's the Mets response? Fire Ray Ramirez. So basically scapegoat a guy hired by Omar.
If the Mets had a competent GM and/or training staff they would not be far away from bouncing back but that's a big if.
Nats just cut it off early, but I have no doubt that would have happened there too.

The Mets, unfortunately, are a train wreck. Even with a new GM(doubtful) and new manager they are still run by the Wilponzis!

Except vital playoff games.
He’s now lost ten straight playoff games where his team had the opportunity to advance. Ten!
