NFT: Yankees Game 6 pre-game chatter

Greg from LI : 10/20/2017 2:00 pm
Buckle up - are you ready? Sevy's ready:

Quote:
“It’s amazing. Last year I was watching the World Series, and now we have a chance to be in the World Series,” Severino said. “I’m very proud of the work I did in the offseason, the work that I did with my pitching coach here (Larry Rothschild) that helped me be where I am.

It would be appropriate
bceagle05 : 10/20/2017 2:02 pm : link
for Baby Bomber Severino to send us to the World Series with a dominant outing. Let's get it!
Not too thrilled with the "amazement"
mac attack : 10/20/2017 2:02 pm : link
I've heard from some.

Win Game 6. Dont worry about any other thing but putting runs on the board vs Verlander. Letting them get to Game 7 in their own ballpark will be less than ideal.
I can put up the gamethread now
B in ALB : 10/20/2017 2:10 pm : link
or wait for the lineups and we can stick with Greg's pregame.

Any preferences?
If you're feeling strong, go for it
Greg from LI : 10/20/2017 2:14 pm : link
I just wanted a little chatter and I wasn't going to break the momentum and start a game thread myself. Either or, doesn't matter.
Hope they are still pissed about first two games
averagejoe : 10/20/2017 2:20 pm : link
and looking for payback. Keuchel got his and Verlander gets his today.

Go Yanks!

This team is so much fun to watch
NYG07 : 10/20/2017 2:29 pm : link
As a 90s kid I took for granted all the championships. After that is became tedious to watch the team as they were just expected to buy championships. 2009 was great, but not nearly as fun as this year has been. This team is loaded with great young talent, and even if they do not win this year, they will be an enormous handful moving forward. The Yankees IMO should go all out to win tonight and not give Houston any hope. Lets go!!!
Lets stomp on their throats and pivot our feet off to the WS
DennyInDenville : 10/20/2017 2:40 pm : link
Let's go!!!!

Severino Gon' shut em down and pitch us to the WS
We haven't seen vintage Sevi yet in these playoffs
Stu11 : 10/20/2017 2:46 pm : link
Game 4 vs. Cleveland was close, but he gave up 3 runs and a couple of homers there. Tonight is the night. The 2nd time we face a SP this post season we get to them. Tonight its Verlander's turn.
Don’t think we could have hoped for the Yanks
mfsd : 10/20/2017 2:48 pm : link
to be in a better spot...bats have woken up, and delivered in clutch moments against some of the best pitchers in baseball, we have the guys we want starting game 6 and if necessary game 7, and our bullpen is as rested as we could hope for going into the 12th game of these playoffs.

I’m very confident the Yanks win tonight, or if not, tomorrow. Should Houston win 2, I think at least we’ll be able to say they beat us at our best.

brought up a good point this morning. Houston has not had to come from behind or have any pressure all season. They pretty much had the division by the AS break. They beat Boston in 4. This is the first time they have real pressure. Let's score some runs early on.
Who would you prefer playing in the series?
GiantFilthy : 10/20/2017 2:57 pm : link
For me it's got to be the Dodgers. NY vs LA. Kershaw vs Judge. Great pitching for both teams vs outstanding hitting and plate discipline. Has the potential to be a classic series.

for me its gotta be the Braves. First of all they suck, and secondly we could spot them 2 games and then go down to Atlanta and rip their pathetic hearts right out of their body just like '96...

I'm Not Usually One To Complain About Announcers...
Jim in Tampa : 10/20/2017 3:28 pm : link
But the number of times in Wednesday's game that Smoltz drooled over Verlander, based on the pitcher's game 2 performance, as an indication of what a BIG advantage it was going to be for Houston in Game 6, made me sick!

I'm not taking anything away from Verlander. He was awesome in Game 2 and will likely be a formidable oponnent in Game 6.

But by most estimates Sevy ranked in the top 3-5 AL starting pitchers all season. Yet all Smoltz could do was drool over Verlander.

Sevy has just as good a chance to be dominant tonight as Verlander does.

Yanks in 6.
...
christian : 10/20/2017 4:00 pm : link
Smoltz several times this season and in the playoffs has mentioned Sev as the future star pitcher of MLB and a future Cy Young winner.

I hope his assessment is spot on.
C'mon Sevy!
Giant John : 10/20/2017 4:03 pm : link
It's your time. You worked for it. Go out there and show them it's time for them to go home. You Got this!!!
On balance I don’t think Smoltz has been that bad
mfsd : 10/20/2017 4:07 pm : link
I’ve gotten annoyed at his ramblings a few times, but I think he’s just a less experienced announcer getting a feel for how to do it. He does know what he’s talking about and has offered good analysis at times
I think Smoltz has improved much this season
Greg from LI : 10/20/2017 4:16 pm : link
He never, ever stopped or even slowed down the talking in the past, but he's learning it seems. He lets the broadcast breathe a bit more now.
think good thoughts and enjoy this clip!

Not that bad? I think he's freaking brilliant. Yes, he talks a bit too much, but that's a byproduct of inexperience as an announcer, combined with an absolutely encyclopedic knowledge of pitching and baseball. Honestly, I feel like he makes about a dozen excellent points that I hadn't thought of almost every time I listen to him. JMO...
I have no memory whatsoever
bceagle05 : 10/20/2017 4:44 pm : link
of that Ruben Sierra three-run shot against Minny in 2003 or 2004.

Me neither, and whoever put that thing together somehow left off Mattingly's homer from the 1995 ALDS.

Here's a 2017 highlights video.

I like Smoltz, too.
bceagle05 : 10/20/2017 4:47 pm : link
If you can get the chemistry right, it's probably best to have a three-man booth with a pitcher and an everyday player. SNY has the Dream Team with Ron and Keith, and I think O'Neill and Coney are excellent when they're together on YES. Smoltz obviously just zeroes in on the pitching.

Cool video but I also don't get how they left off Mattingly's home run. Sierra's right before that was good too but obviously not as memorable. They can make a new one with Bird's and Didi's homers added in along with Mattingly's. And hopefully a few more heading into the World Series if we're lucky.

That Tino homer in 2001 WS was off the chain. Games 3, 4, 5 and 7 were the most exhausting, nerve wracking, exhilarating roller coaster of emotions I can ever remember in sports. Might have the 07 Giants run (Dal, GB, NE) right up there wth it.
we deserved better than the game 7 ending, though
Greg from LI : 10/20/2017 5:26 pm : link
If you get beat by a great hit, then fine, tip your cap, but to lose on that stupid fisted blooper? Still annoys the hell out of me to this day. Tony fucking Womack of all people doubling and Mo's error don't improve my mood, either.

Gave that one away.

Plus Soriano finally stuck it to Schilling with a monumental all time Yankees post season homer in the 8th and it's all but forgotten since they didn't win. Winning is everything

Not a fan of infield in. Jeter at half way catches that ball easily.
Mariano throwing the ball away was awful..
Took me weeks to recover from that 2001 loss.

I desperately wanted that crew to go out on top, but they were valiant in defeat.
