NFT: Random post of the day: Anyone have a walnut tree?

tbonfig : 10/20/2017 3:09 pm
Discovered this year (after moving a year ago) that we have a huge black walnut tree. My daughter and I collected a bunch of the seeds yesterday and I'm curious if anyone has gone through and actually "harvested" the nuts?

For those unfamiliar, as I was, here is a picture of what the seeds look like before getting to the traditional shell:

Wear gloves when cracking them open

they will stain everything they come in contact with, especially skin.

Lucky you tbonfig...

...black walnut is one of the more desirable woods for furniture, veneer, etc. I know you're asking about the nuts in this thread, but acres of these babies can be REALLY profitable. (Like $100,000 / acre for timber lumber alone)

...not suggesting you get the chainsaw yet, though!

use a hammer and chisel to remove the hulls from the nuts. Wash the nuts to get any debris or worms off, them on a screen for a few days. You can then freeze them in their shells by putting them in a vacuum sealed bag or use ziploc bag and water displacement.
My uncle had a walnut tree in his yard

A guy randomly showed up and offered him a couple of grand for it. This guy's business is procuring walnut for luxury car manufacturers, and he travels around looking for trees in people's yards. I guess it yields cheaper wood than buying commercially.
I have two of them at our place upstate-

never done anything with the nuts except try to avoid getting hit by them - they are not small while still in the hull and they come whistling down out of the tree.

On how to harvest black walnuts. I actually just bought a corn sheller to harvest mine. We just moved last year and I let them all rot last year. Hate to let all that good food rot in the yard. You definitely need to watch out for the staining. I am looking forward to seeing how they turn out this year as well. Good luck

We have squirrels in our tree

Who like to try and bomb us with the nuts as we walk below.

I've fallen into war with these squirrels chucking nuts back at them whenever I see them scurrying around on the ground.

As long as we are talking about trees. I just got an 3inch or so bud of a palm tree. The original plant seemed to have white mold on it as well as the little bud I was given. Anyway, I probably made it worse by soaking the bud in water for several days to get the root to grow bigger. I have since read the plants don't do well when waterlogged. Anyway, it is in dirt now, but the whit mold is running about an inch up the trunk and has spread out on the surface of the dirt. Any ideas on how to kill this white stuff? Pics needed?
