NFT: Medical advice

I am currently being treated for Parkinson' and while I think my Doctor is competent for various reasons would like to see someone else. Maybe a second opinion, maybe change Doctors.

What is the most efficient and objective way to find the best (or among the best) neurologist for me in northern California? Also I was looking on line and saw the Mayo Clinic has a hospital in Scottsdale Arizona which would be viable to go to one time but not to travel to on a regular basis. Would there be any value to a one time visit?

The thing that bothers me most is that my Doctor does not seem to be very knowledgeable on new treatments on the horizon. Also when I am having problems it is hard to get a return phone call. I usually hear back two days later which reminds me of the old Rodney Dangerfield joke about calling the suicide hotline and being put on hold.

Recommendations? TIA
I would think a one time vist would be worth trying

At worst you lose a little time and expenses, at best you may get some life altering insights or advise.

If you hooked up with them you may get some great answers to your questions.

One of my life long best friends has been battling Parkinson's for year now. He has been told he has a pretty serious case (has had to already have two brain surgeries to help with it), and one thing he says has helped him is daily work outs and exercise. He ride a bicycle for miles each day and lifts wights. I guess it helps to better maintain muscle control. Even if he misses a couple days it negatively impact him.

Sorry you are having to deal with this. I wish you the best with it I know it can't be easy.
you absolutely should travel out of state for peace of mind

I would suggest Johns Hopkins in Baltimore they are the cutting edge of new treatments. Google them . If Cross country is out of the question book an appt with the head of the department at the Mayo C;inic. Take all your records with you, Your doctor has to give you everything, they are yours.
best of luck Phil

My advice would be to get to the best hospital/ system possible. Plenty of ranknings out there, but In Northern Cal , Stanford and UCSF are always ranked very high nationally. Try to find the top doctors within those systems for your specialty. It's well worth it. Good luck.
Doesn't the national Parkinson's foundation website

List doctors? They should have testimonials, and suck.

I agree with the exercise comment. My Doctor told me that exercise was more valuable than anything he could give me. When the tremors are out of control I have gone out walking. Sometimes it happens in the middle of the night. Fortunately I live in a safe neighborhood.
I bet that the same stuff that helps with seizures
