Entertaining without a doubt, but it's got a long way to go before it can keep company with BB (or anything in that stratosphere, like The Wire, etc.).
be a dick, and 'German' your post. I thought Ozark was good, and I guess there are some similarities to BB. While entertaining, I preferred BB much more.
Although, Breaking Bad wasn't Breaking Bad its first season either. There are similarities in the plot but its from a very very different angle so far. Good show.
The comparison. Its not on BB's level. But the show is very similar to BB in that a family that you are sympathetic towards has to turn to dark methods in order to protect itself from hardrned criminals.
Those of you who refuse to acknowledge that are just being argumentative
and most impressive is Batemans directing. Will be interesting to see how many seasons they do, hopefully it's just 2-3.
Breaking Bad is a fine comparison but I still think the show as a whole gets at too much credit. It should have stopped at season 4 and even that it was like watching a cartoon.
I watched about 4 or 5 episodes. Just didn’t seem to be going anywhere. I’m supposed to care about some guy that launders money for a Mexican drug lord? Laura Linney is very solid.
To each his own, but for my money this show is a pass.
Was much better. The ending is over the top. I do enjoy Marty's cool composure under the worst circumstances though. And Laura Linney really stretches her acting CV with such a raw personna. No make up, looks bedraggled half the time, while delivers big time. The poppy "farmer" has mannerisms that remind me of Bush jr with a beard.
Haven’t had a ton of free time of late but haven’t made time for it either. I was sold on it by a friend who compared it to breaking bad but it hasn’t resonated with me yet. I’ll come back to it

Or you don't understand much of what you watch.
Breaking Bad was, as Gilligan himself put it, 'Mr. Chips turns into Scarface' - a terminally ill sympathetic character who fears his family (with a surprise infant child recent addition) won't be able to sustain themselves financially after he passes on. He gradually transitions into a druglord, his greed and ego surpassing his initial concerns about financial security.
This show is about a guy who willingly goes into business with a cartel to launder their money because of his ego and greed. There's little sympathy to feel for him - that he's pressured to continue to launder money to save his ass after it was determined his business partner was stealing money from them isn't much of a storyline (especially when you consider the fact that he's supposedly this brilliant money many who didn't know that his boob partner was stealing money from the cartel).
Good show, and it's fun - but neither the plot, the cinematography nor the acting are anywhere on BB's level. BB did improve as it went on, but it started off pretty strong.

Agreed!
Also, thanks for the narcos recommendation. I'm going to give it a try.
Good show, but something irked me about the writing. At the beginning of the show, the story takes place in 2007 and towards the middle they just abandon the time setting, and it’s 2017. That’s an awful awful oversight.
I found that it was nothing like Breaking Bad. It may not matter to some people but when I watch a show there have to be some characters I like and sympathize with. Walter White was an evil man at the end but he was a sympathetic character. Skyler and Hank where also characters I found myself rooting for.
In Ozark the protagonist is just a greedy slimy scumbag. His wife isn't much better and the rednecks who stole his money aren't the least bit likable or sympathetic. I'm finding myself rooting for the Mexican drug lord.
Aside from that, a lot of this story just doesn't make sense. I don't know if its bad writing or the main character is supposed to be stupid. This guy waits until he's carrying $8 million in drug money to economize by staying in a fleabag motel with no security and has his money stolen ? His setting up a money laundering operation and he can't spring for a couple of hundred dollars to stay in a Hilton ?
There were flashbacks in some episodes, but it has always been in the present from the current plot.
Spoilers Ahead*
In episode 1 Bruce mentions Marty having a 10 year old Camry with cloth seats. Next scene we see Marty driving a 1997-1999 model Camry.
In Epidsode 2, Marty and Wendy tell Del they have a top of the line Honda Odyssey worth about $27,000. We see they have a 2002-2006 model Honda Odyssey.
In Episode 2 or 3, Ruth is stated to be 19 years old. She also says that her birth year is 1988. She would of been 19 in 2007.
That would be my take as well.
It's a very entertaining show and well done.
Some of the episodes are down right brilliant.
There are a handful that get a little too absurd, or fail to deliver on what they're trying to do.

Any other recommendations?

Bateman and Linney alone are worth watching the show, but the setting in the Ozark's is what drives a lot of the comedic moments.
The wife is hooked on it, and I enjoy it quite a bit, especially since I haven't been impressed with "Bloodline" much after season 1.
There were flashbacks in some episodes, but it has always been in the present from the current plot.
