Five years ago against San Francisco...

Pretty amazing how quickly things change in five years.

In 2012, the Giants went to San Francisco in an NFC Championship Game rematch. Jim Harbaugh talked all week about how the 49ers were the better team and how they got screwed by an early whistle on an Ahmad Bradshaw fumble the year earlier.

This was clearly a game the 49ers had circled on their calendar, and San Fran talked a big game all week. When it came time to actually play, though, the Giants won easily 26-3.

The Giants wound up missing the playoffs by one game, and the 49ers went on to lose the Super Bowl. Now both teams are in the cellar.
And it was after that game that Harbaugh

moved Kaepernick over Alex Smith. I am convinced that Harbaugh didn't think that Smith could beat the Giants and that is why he made the change. That seems like a long time ago.
I was

thinking the exact same thing this week and intend to mention it in the game preview for this game.
the defense dominated that game

IIRC, we kicked a bunch of short field goals. Kapernick came on the scene not long after this.
The NFL is pretty fragile

Any team can turn it around in a year or 2 ( except the Browns ) and any team can fall from the top in a couple years.

Rookies being relied on early, injuries, concussions forcing early retirement, bad O Line play, limited resources to true 4-3 DE's.....the NFL is so different than 20 years ago.

Smith got pulled before halftime.

This was Kaepernick's first real action, and he proceeded to lead the 49ers to the Super Bowl before coming back to earth in future years.
It shows how amazing the Patriots are

as much as I hate to admit it. They have morphed and changed with the only constants being Brady and Belewizard.
That was also the game

That the Giants and Eli have not been the same since that second half or so it seems if memory serves me right !!!!!!!i mean it’s been downhill since .....

The Giants had some big wins later in the season, but definitely didn't run as smoothly as they did before then. Some around here speculated that Eli got an undisclosed injury during the game.
not only did we beat SF
bluepepper : 11/7/2017 3:58 pm : link
in 2012 we also beat Green Bay and New Orleans. Those were the top 3 seeds in NFC in 2011. We beat them all handily and somehow we end up not making the playoffs. Ranks right up there for me on the list of most frustrating seasons ever.

We also seemed to have that game circled

Our defense played out of their minds. Another season that “what might have been” if the ball bounced a little differently.
17-16 MNF loss to Washington

ended up being the difference in the season. That team should have won the division.
I was at that game - great day

My buddy who lives out there found us a solid Giants tailgate with kegs. The Niners fans were all up in our shit in Candlestick but the Giants just took care of business and by the fourth it was mostly Giants fans.

Post-game at Aces watching the World Series and celebrating with other fans.

Better days...
Some numbers from that game
BigBlueinChicago : 11/7/2017 4:49 pm : link
Giants:

Runs - 37
Passes - 28

Giants defense - 6 sacks (we get pressure on the QB?)

49ers leading receiver - Mario Manningham

Vernon Davis - 3 catches, 37 yards (who says the Giants can't stop tight ends?)

Giants final drive of game: 4th quarter, 13 plays, all 13 were runs, 72 yards in 7:10. Ended in a FG to go up 26-3

(we run the game out on the ground and they can't stop us?)

This was the high watermark of the 2nd Super Bowl team. The only other game like this was 2008 at home against Baltimore.

They would never play this well again the rest of that season (despite other wins) and you can make a case they haven't played to this level on both sides of the ball in the last 5 years since this game.
2012 and 2008

We're much more similar than popular opinion. Both teams were nasty through the first 3 months or so. Both defending NFL champs. Both faded down the stretch. There are variances of course but in the end they teased us terribly. There were points in both seasons I was convinced we'd be watching the Giants play well into January.
Balance of winning in the NFL......

From year to year the regular season record can be so similar but the results can be so different.......

2007 10-6 Win Super Bowl
2010 10-6 Miss playoffs
2011 9-7 Win Super Bowl
2012 9-7 Miss playoffs

Two close division losses really came back to bite the Giants at the end of the game. In addition to the 17-16 Redskins loss, there was the early game against the Eagles where an OPI penalty pushed the Giants just out of Tynes' range, resulting in him missing the potential game-winning field goal.
Who would've thought
Breeze_94 : 11/7/2017 11:24 pm : link
that the Giants big 3 receivers (Nicks, Cruz, Manningham) would all be out of the league by now.

Nicks was a 23 year old superstar, Cruz had just broken out as a 24-25 year old stud, and Manningham was coming into his own at age 25 as well.

Manningham was pretty much out of the league by 27, Nicks was irrelevant by 26 and done by 28, and Cruz is out of the league despite only being 30.

Hakeem Nicks is the same age as Antonio Brown, Dez Bryant, and A.J Green and it seems like he has been out of the league forever.

Talk about some bad injury luck...
but then again
Breeze_94 : 11/7/2017 11:25 pm : link
that bad injury luck also led to Odell Beckham Jr.

Yet Larry fitzgerald is still the greatest at age 33
