Jerry Jones Is Said to Hire David Boies to Block Roger Goodell’s Contract - ( New Window )
Boies is the man

70+ by now i think... offices in my hometown of Armonk... and my sister-in-law works as a paralegal for him.

This'll be interesting - wonder if Kraft supports Jones' case.

For the life of me i have no idea why Goodell hasnt been fired yet. And I dont even care about stuff like the anthem or London games like so many other fans - he's simply not taking this league in the right direction, revenue or otherwise.. to deserve to stick around let alone get paid $30 million a year for what i have no idea.
NFL going down in flames.

if Jones gets involved in any sexual harassment claims, Boies can help him try to investigate the accusers.
He really wants Zeke to play

If this goes through he is alienating himself from the other owners.

JJ lawsuit
Giantslifer : 11/8/2017 3:55 pm : link
The NFL needs to tell JJ that if he sues the Cowboys will be removed from the NFC East and sent to the NFC south . Carolina will be exchanged.
This will force Americas team to play in front of no one. Would anyone care about Cowboy - Bucs season series?
This would lower the value of cowboys to below sea level.
Jerry could become Papa Jerry.

Goodell for all his flaws has grown the money side of the business. The rules that are in place for suspensions are there to prevent the NFL from getting bad press. Goodell has done a pretty good job of cleaning up the league from that prospective as well.

Jerry needs to clean his personal team up and he is lazy in that department. Stop picking up players with bad reps, and maybe he wouldn't have to fight him tooth and nail when his players get suspended.
I dislike Goodell like the rest but they really need to draw the line

All the commissioners, and the NCAA, grew the money side of the business the last decade. It was low hanging fruit. In footballs case - they rode the advent of fantasy football, there was minimal incremental genius in growing the brand beyond that.

Goodell is a lawyer, he is not a marketing genius.

And now ratings are declining. Kaepernick and this anthem issue has divided players/fans/owners to a player relations issue not seen in quite some time. The LA expansion idea, with 3 teams moving to LA/Vegas within a few years, was botched badly. The suspension rules, where commissioner is judge and jury, is proving to both legally unsound and a PR mess.

And the concussions issue hasnt been particularly well handled either (i'm not sure anyone has an answer for this one too).

I dont often agree with Skelator - and his motives for this are clearly about Zeke and not about league wide issues - but there's really no justification to keep Goodell and his $30 million salary at this point unless you're a lazy person with the view no one else can come in and do the job.

Viewership in every major sport is down. The article clearly states that Jones is upset about Zeke, and that's the driving force behind it.

A lawyer who has close ties to the NFL praised Boies' skill as a lawyer to OTL but said that his hiring was likely a "scare tactic" because there doesn't appear to be an obvious legal challenge to Goodell's contract negotiations, a process that Jones voted in support of earlier in the year. Jones "probably knows he doesn't have a strong claim," the lawyer said.

That SOB somehow earns HoF status, voted for the very things he is now opposing and now wants to sue because he isn't getting his way.

Jones is not alone
HomerJones45 : 11/9/2017 7:52 am : link
there are owners who believe Goodell has indulged himself leading the NFL into social issues which are either zero sum or are detracting from the League image among its core viewership. They are also unhappy that the his enforcement of the personal conduct policy has brought the league criticism and lawsuits and done nothing for the League image.
Of all people - Francessa - who includes the disclaimer
jcn56 : 11/9/2017 8:23 am : link
that he and Goodell do not get along - was the first one to defend Goodell here, and say that the majority of the owners do like the work he's done.

He pointed towards the settlement of the CTE case, stating that the owners had expected a multi-billion dollar settlement that ended up being under a billion, and the CBA, which was very much favorable towards the owners.

I've always seen Goodell for what he is - a representative of the owners, carrying out their wishes. This seems like Jones is in the minority and he's trying to use the legal process for some leverage to get some of what he wants done, if only the removal/reduction of the suspension process for off the field behavior.

You couldn't be farther from the truth. The personal conduct policy was put in to protect the league from losing viewership over domestic violence issues. The OWNERS wanted this to protect their image and their profit. As for the kneeling, there is absolutely no way to fix the problem without alienating half your audience. There is a middle ground for sure, but at the end of the day you stand to lose more now.

When the divisions were changed it was Mara, Laurie, and Snyder who went to bat to keep Dallas in the NFC east. Dallas is the cash cow and the other owners know it.

I'm sure the other owners in the NFC south would be doing cartwheels, if they could, being weighed down with all that extra Dallas cash they would have if Dallas joined their division.

Like Reggie said, Dallas is the straw that stirs the drink.
Doesn't it take 24 votes to do more or less anything..
Racer : 11/9/2017 9:33 am : link
..amongst the owners? Instead of finding a block of 8 other owners who would support him or consensus-build to get himself there he goes right to the lawyers.

Great businessman and persuasive leader. At least I'm told he is; they put him in the Hall of Fame based purely on asset appreciation so it must be true.

I don't think he can find a block that agrees with him, so that's why he is pursuing litigation. My understanding is that JJ's issue isn't so much with the fact that Goodell is being renewed but the amount of compensation.
confusing....
BillKo : 11/9/2017 11:20 am : link
the NFL is still making money, more than before (despite ratings being down). I think someone on a previous post cited this.

Only 1-2% of the players are kneeling...which is before the game. Not during, or after.

Most of the NFL owners, the employers who can make the rule, aren't enforcing it because they seem to support their players/understand what they are supporting. Jones is in the minority.

I know you can sue for anything, but is this really something he can win? And is it worth it?

Hyperbole at its finest
Knineteen : 11/9/2017 11:33 am : link
The way most on here talk, you'd think the NFL was on the verge of collapse.

Billionaires arguing with billionaires...and blaming millionaires for the league's issues.

The NFL is fine...relax.

I think it has more to do with rivalries and if it ain't broke, don't fix it than Dallas being a cash cow. The Giants were always the team with the highest attendance along with the Broncos. I don't see where Dallas makes the Giants one extra nickel just because they are in the NFC East. JJ wants to get out of sharing with other owners in merchandising, too.
