Salary Odell Eli going forward

RobThailand : 11/10/2017 12:17 pm
Hey guys

Im a New Yorker living in Chinag Mai Thailand the last 14 years. I watch every Jint game in the middle of the night im 51 we had the season tix what ever.
this post is not meant to cause alot of shit.

just looking a numbers kind of thing...

Eli is going no where unless TC convinces him to come to Jax on a 2 year contract

ODELL is coming up... on a contract year. i just don't know im on the fence on this.
he is awesome but for 18 million a year awesome ? for a team that is 1-7 this year.

its a tough call.

What do you Fellow BBI guys and girls say?

Let Eli play out his deal
GeneInCal : 11/10/2017 12:20 pm : link
and sign/extend Odell. No brainer, the kid is a game changer.
Eli is under contract with a no-trade clause
BigBlue4You09 : 11/10/2017 12:21 pm : link
He can't just "go" to JAX if he wants. And you sign Beckham at all costs.
So to sum it up...
Keith : 11/10/2017 12:22 pm : link
Eli is old and at the end and makes lots of money.

Odell is young and just starting his amazing career and will need to get paid soon.

Because our older, no longer elite QB makes money, you want to let the best WR in football go?

If you can't afford both, you cut Eli in a second.
......
CoughlinHandsonHips : 11/10/2017 12:23 pm : link
It's good timing for Odell. By the time he needs to be paid the gmen won't have a franchise QB salary on the books

Thank you.
I'd let Eli run his course

I'd trade OBJ for a plethora of draft picks.

Unpopular opinion but that's how I would handle it. We haven't won anything with OBJ, not saying it's his fault; but I'd choose to sell him instead of paying him top dollar when our franchise QB is nearing the finish line and etc etc..

Use the picks for new WRs, OL and Defensmen

What makes you think they won't draft a franchise QB at the top of the first round?

I agree that you make all effort to sign Odell, but not at all costs. His agent has said he wants Odell to be paid like a top QB, the Giants can't do that. If it's $18 mill per, yes, give the man his money.
You will get lots of answers on this
AnnapolisMike : 11/10/2017 12:26 pm : link
Eli will likely be back next season...this is not really on him and he provides a cushion for the next QB.

OBJ is a different story. He is polarizing and will be expensive to keep. Is a any WR worth 15-20M per year? There are realistic arguments on either side. Personally I don't think he is worth a top contract due to injury risk (Cruz, Nicks are recent examples) and it makes your roster worse elsewhere.
Odell can say whatever he wants.
Keith : 11/10/2017 12:27 pm : link
Giants should give him slightly more than the last highest paid WR. If that's not good enough, enjoy playing on the FT.

Any player, including the next qb is at risk for a career changing injury though.

i think Odell is awesome and totally one of a kind. But could The NY Football Giants get what is needed for him to move forward. That Rams game was unreal and alot of the older guys posting were right on this was the 1970's allover again.
Play Odell on his 5th year deal next season ($8mil-ish)
est1986 : 11/10/2017 12:41 pm : link
Spring 2019 is when you Tag him with the exclusive franchise tag which is about $15mil-ish and while he is tagged and can't negotiate else where we offer a fair market but not ridiculous contract and then ask him if he wants to play on the tag for a year or maybe even two and risk another injury or does he want to cash in now for a fair deal.. Easy. FYI I think 5 years 100 mil with 50 guaranteed will be a fair deal for a player of his ability come 2019. By the time he signs his deal Eli's deal is off the books or on its ast year.

What agent doesn't say things like that? He'll get top WR money, not QB money.
But the real answer is
est1986 : 11/10/2017 12:48 pm : link
NO WAY YOU LET ODELL PLAY ANYWHERE ELSE!!!! DOING SO WOULD BE EQUIVALENT TO CUTTING LT WHEN HE HELD OUT IN '83!
The one thing
RobThailand : 11/10/2017 12:55 pm : link
is Odell is playing in NY he knows that. the browns and other teams that could afford him well they suck media wise after football. So lets see what happens.
I don't understand the idea of trading Odell
Vincenzo : 11/10/2017 12:58 pm : link
The whole reason that teams invest so much in the draft process is to acquire players of Odell's caliber. What happens when you draft those generational HOF type of players? They eventually get paid.

Fans are often complaining about our picks not receiving second contracts and now that the Giants have a player who is fully deserving of it, people are hesitant about paying him.

Yes, he's a little wacky and dramatic. Yes, he has cost the team at times with unnecessary acts. However, you can't really deny how special he has been. Look back at our schedule since he was drafted and how many wins are directly contributed to Odell being the difference maker. Even in a majority of the losses, Odell is the reason the game is within reach. The positives outweigh the negatives.

Dude
RobThailand : 11/10/2017 1:05 pm : link
i completely agree but the only thing im looking at is a accounting and salary cap..
LB sucks and has been for years well we all know what else sucks im a huge a Beckum fan but for a fantastic wr who can't catch a ball from a fantastic qb because of a shitty line is it with it
ok so he's worth 15 to 18 mil a year
RobThailand : 11/10/2017 1:19 pm : link
Eli who i love as qb is 22 mill. thats almost 40 million in salary cap were do we go from here, forgot about pugh and the other underachievers
thats a 4th of the total roster
RobThailand : 11/10/2017 1:20 pm : link
all i raised was a question?
Hell no
Painless62 : 11/10/2017 1:20 pm : link
Nothing personal. A balanced offense is the best. Wide receivers are fickle and like all football players injury prone. Far better off to use the money on 2-3 other good players.

Then you get Eli off the cap. You don't let the amazing young talent walk because you have Eli on the books for 2 more years. Does that make any sense?

to see Odell in Dallas, which is where I think he could end up if we let him go.

Having said that, I'm not all in on him right now either. Not at QB-level salary.

I'm with those who say play out the fifth year and use the FT. Offer him a lucrative contract and structure it so the cap hits fit in with our longer-term plans. If he won't sign after that so be it.

We need to find another legit threat at WR anyway. While I expect him to recover and still be a star, if he loses even 5% of what he used to be because of injury he will still be a great WR, but not irreplaceable.

We've had plenty of injuries to WR who we thought were going to be Giants for life.

UMMM, no.. Not even close. Give me a break on the LT value comparisons. OBJ is not LT to the Giants. LT changed the LEAGUE... OBJ isn't even the best WR in the league right now, let alone of ALL-TIME! LT was a once in a lifetime Player.. With all the passing in today's game LT would have 20 plus sacks a season....Please stop with the OBJ and LT comparisons.

Odell/Eli

All players are tradable. All Management is fireable.
Eli is at end of career, he hasn't grown. Still making same mistakes he did 10 years ago. has he learned nothing from Payton - Get rid of ball, stop fumbling.
let him go out on his terms- If TC wants him - Eli probably would go. Get conditional draft pick.
Odell is a great talent though childish. If someone wants him for an early 1st rd or Pro bowl OL - It was great watching.
Reese goes- he had 10 years. MacMagoo ?
I hope Eli goes to a team

One more injury to OBJ that diminishes his speed would be
catastrophic to the money he is going to garner .
Let Eli finish up his career get Webb ready to go and
rebuild with the draft and free agency .

$18M per for a WR is a huge chunk of cap. The Giants would be smart to listen to offers. If a team offers a 1st and a 2nd, maybe it's time to pull the trigger.
Man I wouldn't give odell

A fucking nickel. Fuck him
Unless SOME GM
old man : 11/10/2017 3:55 pm : link
can turn this whole thing around over the next 2 years and have the arrow up for the team...OBJ walks asap...maybe even begging for a trade(which I think ownership may accommodate if they can do better than a 3rd round comp pick;-)).
Other than that I think they use all options to keep him here as inexpensively as possible until Eli is off the books.

The only game that matters is consistency in regular season games, and in postseason. So far, he has not show that he is a CLUTCH playmaker in postseason as a goal, otherwise he is a JAG with hype. He is not elite, contrary to popular belief. There are other guys that carry teams to postseason AND advance.

Point to results. Sorry to be that guy, but let's be realistic in a time of underachiever, quitters, and hyped individuals that are not DURABLE.

And they got shut out. This is not an issue. There is a good chance this is Eli's last year here as the Giants can save $10MM by releasing him. If they give him one more year, Odell is only making a modest $8MM. I have no doubt the Giants will be drafting a QB at the top of the draft next spring so the timing works out. Odell is making big money on his second contract while the Giants have a cost controlled QB on a rookie contract for 5 years.

I don't know what the exact numbers are but just for sake of simplicity let's say Odell gets a deal at $18MM per. The rookie QB makes $5MM. That $23MM total is still less than the market value of franchise QBs as of today. This should not be a problem.

Breeze_94 : 11/11/2017 11:12 am : link
He is under contract next year so his new deal won't actually begin until 2019. By then, there is a chance that Eli could be gone.

Eli's contract comes off the books simultaneously with Odell's new deal. Giants have a new QB playing on a rookie deal instead of 20mil a year like Eli for the entirety of Odell's new deal. The cap hit of Odell's deal is offset.
