Couldn't they offer a Saturday night package to networks to offset some of this? Start it from Mid-November once College ends to the end of the season. I know Saturday ratings are lower than Thursday but this could offset some of that $7M
extending the season by 1 week, so Thursday night games would be on after a bye week, thus giving the players a bye week and extended rest for the next game. This would also put Super Bowl Sunday on Presidents day weekend.
I'm all for it. Give me the Presidents Day weekend Super Bowl.

With conference championships, the college schedule runs through the first weekend of December. And the NFL has saturday games beginning 2 weeks after that, so there's basically only one open saturday.

Putting the SB on Presidents Day Sunday has long been an NFL goal. The worst part about SB parties is having to go to work the next day; this will make it more of an event than it already is.
And that Thursday game is the week after one of your byes, and thus adding a week to the season, and then playing the SB on Presidents weekend makes so much sense it is surprising it hasn't happened.
Owners refuse to loose a dime, but will keep this idiotic schedule that gets its start players hurt a rapidly increasing paces. NFL is in a bad spot.
Why should the owners take the hit and not players? Players get 50% of revenues as do owners. But owners then pay coaches, front office, operations, medical, training, travel etc. Your ridiculous if you think the owners pocket 50% of revenues after paying players.

Unfortunately President's Day falls on the 3rd Monday in February. It will only fall on President's Day weekend if it's played on February 14th.

Agreed.
Only reason I can think that might prevent this is that the players want to get to the off season faster.
There must be something we're missing. This seems so easy to solve. Cut to 3 pre season games and add a bye week. Or add a bye week and move the Super Bowl to presidents weekend which would be great for most fans. The NFL has issues that probably can't ever be solved but Thursday night games seem like such an easy fix.
I'm pretty sure the NFL & networks can work out a deal that eliminates almost all of Thursday night, and keeps cap money.
Have opening night on Thursday. Keep thanksgiving. After T-day add Saturday night game.maybe add Friday(One shot) after T-day.
I'm guessing the Saturday night game would have better ratings.

I can envision owners walking the schedule back a week also and pushing for the 18 game schedule....and the NFLPA for a roster bump to 54-55 for added risk. Reduce the TNF by 1 game but let the network flex in a game from the last 4 of 18 RS games as long as there's a 3-4 week lead time for players/fans. At week 10/11 you should have a good idea of who the playoff candidates likely are...go from there.
Personally l'd like TNF once/month as something special to look forward to...or less MNF and push games back to Sunday afternoon.
These players get hurt enough as is. Only the healthy teams (like the Eagles seem to be year in and year out) would be competitive.
Walking the schedule back a week is greed as well. Football needs to be over by the beginning of February. I don't want guys reporting to spring training while waiting for the big game :D
I doubt the players want to lose $130k each either.

I would think that would work much better.
Since the cap is set as 47% of total revenue, the owners would be loosing about 7m as well. Actually less since that is revenue, not profit.

Thus why you would add an extra week of play so that you can do exactly that.

I'd say just start the season a week earlier. Teams can get 2 bye weeks, including one before TNF. Everyone is happy.
