Blame TC for current woes?

You can make the case that Coughlin failing to come down on OBJ was the original sin.

The Odell-Norman incident has zero to do with the team two years later. It has nothing to do with a sub par offensive line, an aging QB and coaches who arenít doing their job

Yes but now they are playing like winners not losers (except Bortles). TC changed the whole dynamics for that team. And he hired the HC.

TC hung around a yr or two
well...bye TC : 11/11/2017 9:26 am : link
too long. Mara shouldve let him go and brought someone in who would discipline Odell. Instead TC was on thin ice, knew it and looked the other way out of expediency. All that said, todays problems are Mac and Reese, not TC.
I see it different
rocco8112 : 11/11/2017 9:31 am : link
Sicn the Giants believed TC was the main problem after 2015. They decided to change, and the main change was firing him and promoting the OC he hired.

Bet they would like to have that one back. Now with a coach who is not near the caliber and the same guy at GM making the same mistakes the bottom has fallen out and the Giants are one of the, and pending a possible loss this week, the worst team in the NFL.

If anything they should have cleaned house or kept TC. I would have kept him and i would have liked to have seen what he would have done with the talent infusion last year.

And yet Mularkey and Bradley could get nothing out of them. I don't know why it is so hard for some of you to begrudgingly give some credit. They had a player being interviewed recently (I think it was Up To The Minute) and the player kept emphasizing the culture change, Coughlin Time, alluding to the suspension of Fournette, holding players responsible for their actions, etc. Might be small things, but the attention to detail can make all the difference in getting the most out of the players.

Just so we are clear. Tom has no responsibility in hiring Marrone. Tom has no responsibility in installing a culture change in the building. Tom has no responsibility in signing Calais Campbell - the current sack leader and leading to a resurgence in play where the team leads the league in sacks. People are quick to point out that they had to pay for Calais, yet the Giants despite spending money like a drunken sailor in a whorehouse can't buy a sack. Tom has no responsibility in picking Cam Robinson whom has lead to the league's no 1 rusher in Fournette whom Tom picked that's while serving a 1 game suspension.

Coughlin definitely had a say in personel as well. Draft picks were a group vote with Reese, Coughlin, and Mara. Another thing to note is that Coughlinís voice was probably the strongest when it came to relaying what players were developing and could contribute in future seasons.

Everyone shares the blame in this.

So, no. No you can't.

The Coughlin era had run it's course, that's all. He made some mistakes here and there, but the personnel issues were Reese and co.

The biggest mistake made was retaining the entire staff after Coughlin's exit. They should have brought new blood in.

Disagree,

2010 team pissed season away on TO's and shit defense leading to a historic collapse at home. Although that D got a ton of takeaways themselves.

2011 team was actually worse but Eli's heroics and the D coming on late and in the playoffs put on a historic run to a title. Fucking elite coaching job to build that group up to a title winner.

2012 cracks start to show but team had same record as title year.

2013, team was fucking horrible. That o line was a joke and the team literally had no running backs. I believe they signed Jacobs off the street for a few games. (Giants STILL do not have a settled RB position four season later, thanks Jerry) This team was brutal though. The fact they went on a winning streak, actually had a meaningful game mid-season after a six loss start and finished 7 - 9 is actually, to me, quite a coaching achievement. Although they did catch a lot of backup QB's, no one gave up. How is this year looking under similar adversity, with my in my view, superior talent. 2013 was rock bottom in terms of talent and a rebuild was needed.

2014 - 2015 - OC Gilbride was scapegoated, no offense could function with that line they had in 2013, or lack of TE, or the evaporated Nicks etc. TC hired McAdoo to bring west coast offense to NY. Bet he wishes he had that one back.

In my opinion the team started trending somewhat up from 14 - 15. Certainly the offense was improving from the collapse in 13. Seasons had identical records, but I think 2015 the team was better than 14. Now, the common narrative is that the bumbling old man lost it and caused many defeats in '15. I see it a bit different. The defense was historically bad in '15 and that played into a lot of decision making. Few plays different that team has a better record.

Before 2016 Giants ownership decides that change is needed and draw conclusion that Coughlin as the main problem. They promote the OC, who has no HC experience and only two years on the job, with the idea that he can keep improving the offense and keep stability. No real other major changes are made.

Under McAdoo thew Giants go from having one of the consistently best offenses, particularly with the passing game, in the NFL to one of the worst. Basically the exact opposite outcome of what the main rationale was for promoting McAdoo in the first place. So that plan failed miserably. Team has good season in '16 on the backs of a talent infusion on D.

That Brings us to now. The D turned into a pumpkin after the hail mary in last year's playoffs and the offense is still one of the league's worst. McAdoo has lost the team and the Giants are one of the three worst teams in the NFL. The bottom has fallen out and now TC is not here to take the blame. The rebuild from 2013 has failed miserably. This team team somehow has a worse o line situation than before and now the D sucks.

Me, seeing how this shit show has bottomed out, I would like to have seen what TC could have done last year with a better D. Giants certainly did not play their best game in the playoffs last year. Boat distractions and pre-game idiocy, Eli came to play though, which is conveniently forgotten. I think TC should have gotten that chance since it was the third year of a roster rebuild and a ton of talent was infused on the defensive side of the ball which was the main problem in 2015. I obviously could see why they thought change was needed after '15, but to just can the two time champion coach and promote his green and unproven OC smelled odd at the time, and certainly has proven to be a disaster now.

Long story short, head coaching was blamed for the team losing from 2013 on. Seems to me that was not the case and if change was to be done after 2015 they should have brought real change. Now the change is coming two years later and Eli is probably going to be gone.

What a mess, something to think about too with so many ready to run Eli out of town.

Somehow the culture of a decent team (11-5 last year with upgrades on offense for 2017 and SuperBowl aspirations) has completely deteriorated.

I'd argue that it's not unreasonable that failing to discipline OBJ poisoned the apple.

This is a team that should have much better results and the question is "why not."

The culture was fine last year when they were winning, everyone was buddy buddy.

The answers are:

1. Below average line
2. Injury to most of the WR
3. Aging QB
4. Pass rush that has vanished.
5. Regression in the secondary

FatMan in Charlotte : 11/11/2017 1:30 pm : link
last year despite being ranked near the bottom of most offensive categories. So what happened? A TE was signed another one drafted, a FB was added, and an aging WR was inked.

We cut the FB without hardly using him. The blocking TE has played less than 50% of the running play snaps, and the aging WR shit the bed.

We didn't upgrade the OL. We didn't change the offensive personnel groupings. We basically took a shiity offense from last year and said we'd roll with it and expect the D to win games.

That's on Reese and Mac, and one has to wonder where the communication and teamwork was for the Ellison signing and the Smith release.

I'm not going to dig up press conferences and introductions. The point to make just isn't worth it to me. I know what I see/hear. I live about 25 minutes south Jax and get bombarded with Jaguars news. Caldwell is an afterthought in that organization. If I was to wager money, I would not be surprised to see Caldwell pushed out with Tom consolidating his role. At this moment in that franchise, Tom is looked at as a savior. If you choose to dismiss Tom's influence, then nothing I or anyone else writes will convince you otherwise.

Well, let's see. Tom Coughlin has successfully built up and changed the culture in the programs where he has gone. Boston college, jacksonville, N.Y. Giants and now back to Jacksonville again.

Look at this team minus Coughlin. Still the same issues and worse.

Jacksonville hasn't been able to get out of their own way no matter who they brought in or drafted. Coughlin comes in and no matter what his role is, His fingerprints are all over that team and we are all seeing the results.

You just have to look at the history. What talent has Caldwell procured?? What success has he had in building any team??

But go ahead and think of Coughlin as some figure head with no say and no impact with what Jacksonville is doing and continue to lay the blame of this team on someone who is 2 years removed!!!

One of truly worst things to happen to the Giants in many years was going 11-5 and the fools gold feeling that went along with it.

The team Coughlin left had major holes both in talent and accountability. There was always a major rebuild coming, and in a weird way the team is closer to turning the corner now than it was the day left.
Absolutely!

Apparently he did not un-recommend(I know, but you get the point) McAdoo...even though TC himself may have been totally persona non-grata.

Blame for the current woes....not so much really.

Blame for the woes? Try Jerry 'Do we really need top pick OL and LB?' Reese, and Co.
Yup! His fault that he didnít ask to be fired sooner.

If he had left after 2014, the Giants would have burned through another HC trying to develop crappy draft picks and McAdoo would be the up and coming Prospect that everyone wants.

So yes, TCís fault that all we have accomplished is that McAdoo may be eliminated as the HC prospect in 2018.
3 people to blame

Reese, Reese and Reese
You can blame him (and Reese) for not making the postseason

from 2012-2015. But this failure is on Reese more than anyone else.
