Oklahoma is really playing lights out tonight against TCU and Mayfield is quite the stud. Reminds me alot of Drew Brees in his demeanor and in how he throws the football. I can only go by what I see, but if he is not one of the top QBs and Rosen is that much better then Rosen must be very special. He would certainly be fun to watch should we go QB in the first round as he can really make all the throws. Is he considered a day one prospect by the pundits? Do his off field issues make him drop into the second round or were these just maturity issues and corrected? Fun to watch and interested in what others have to think. Fire away.
Well

If he's your drew Bree's comparison then you will like his current draft stock. Round 2
Can he take snaps under center?

Mayfield

I've liked him for a while. I think he's gonna be the best qb out of this class, extends plays better than any other guy (jackson can obviously run, but Mayfield is always ready to reset his feet and throw like Russell Wilson). Most concerns seem to be about his size and working through his progressions, but from what i've read he has improved a bit on making reads this year. FWIW, Oklahoma has the most efficient offense in i think the past 20 years. Most important to me, he has the "it" factor. Whole team relies on him...he actually embraces it. I think he's the kind of leader our team needs. Interestingly enough, i think Webb beat him out at Tech before he left. I wonder if that would be a factor in drafting him. His ability to buy time also helps a team with a poor offensive line, and i think he could hide some of our deficiencies there. Two time walk on...been hoping he ends up a Giant for a while, but i don't see us passing on rosen.
He looks good

But from what I’ve seen he doesn’t seem to have a good feel for pressure — like he doesn’t have the internal clock he’ll need at the nfl level. Not really an issue now at the college level with pretty good protection in front of him.

Also think he gets away with some throws that won’t fly at the next level.

Could be a stud or bust in the nfl. That’s why it’s such a tough position to project.
Funny, you're the third or fourth guy . . . .

here I've read make the Brees comparison, and that's exactly the impression I got last season when stumbling upon him when looking at some of the other players on that team like Perine.

His stats are dazzling, but shortly we'll hear the rag arm and gimmick offense criticisms. Yes, he's got the same "rag arm" Philip Rivers had in school. And he can only play in the offense of the school he's attending. So I guess those are valid criticisms.

He's an exciting QB to watch. His game is all about movement and he routinely extends plays with his feet. And he's also a threat to pull the ball down and run. Plus, he's the most excited player on the team. He's a one man cheering squad. I've seen him run the entire length of the field to hoist the receiver in congratulations.

Put him into as system where he can do the the things he can do well and he may become memorable. Try to turn him into something else, and you've got pretty good bust potential.

I've seen round projections for him anywhere from 1st to 3rd. But I would have to think even the Giants would do due diligence with him.
Everything about his numbers today was divisible by 3!

You put it really well in your 4th paragraph. He's gonna need a lot of bootleg action imo to get him moving, it'll help him improvise and he's excellent at throwing off balanced. He's smaller so people automatically knock the arm, but he can really sling it.

Quite possible Darnold stays in school. He and none of the big 5 have been outstanding to date and may come down to how they close out their season..then the bowl games...then the Combine/ pro day.
I advocated Mayfield in a recent thread as the most consistent over his college career.FWIW.

The other player he reminded me a little of is Fran Tarkenton. Though Mayfield is more physical. He's 6''1" & about 220, so he's a pretty solid kid.
I don't see the Giants drafting a 6'1" quarterback
gogiants : 11/12/2017 12:45 am : link
Mayfield has tremendous stats. Based on season performance to date, PFF has had him rated as the top draft quarterback for each of the last 4 weeks. Some articles say that shorter quarterbacks have trouble throwing over the middle and compensate by being more mobile and throwing on the run. The Giant's have tended more to a pocket passer QB. Here's a link to an interesting graphic on starting quarterback heights in the NFL.

You mean the same Davis Webb who was a backup to Pat Mahomes?

If you go back far enough, every NFL player was a backup to someone else at some point in their amateur or professional career.

If any one of them are going in the top 15 of the 1st round, they'd be crazy to stay in school regardless of the season they are having.
Darnold?
Giant John : 11/12/2017 6:57 am : link
Not a fan. Mayfield on the other hand is a football player who wins. No single stat is more important than that. Drew Bree's is an excellent comparison only Mayfields arm is stronger. Kids going to be good in the NFL. I don't care what some others may think of him.
If McAdoo stays
Sammo85 : 11/12/2017 7:31 am : link
I could see him pushing for him or a Darnold/Jackson rather than a Rosen or Rudolph or Allen.

It’s clear he wants a mobile QB who gives options in various spreads.

If the Giants Stay at 3...
Jim in Tampa : 11/12/2017 8:28 am : link
(Meaning the third position) then they're not going to have their choice of Rosen or Darnold. They'll be lucky if one of them is available, since Darnold is rumored to be leaning towards returning to USC and SF just might trade that valuable #2 position if they don't want a QB.

I like Rosen a lot. Very strong arm and an accurate passer. His "attitude" issues have been blown way out of proportion. Yes, he is a bit of a statue in the pocket but so (was/is) Brady, Peyton, Eli and many other top QBs. (Don't believe the lie that all pocket QBs are going to be replaced by mobile QBs. There are very few Aaron Rodgers out there. QBs with strong, accurate arms will ALWAYS be rated higher than mobile QBs with lesser throwing tools.)

Daronld scares me. He may well have the highest ceiling of all the QBs but through 11 games he has 11 interceptions and has also fumbled the ball 7 times. (I appreciate Eli, but I don't want another QB who fumbles that much.)

To be fair, Mahomes was a top 10 pick

He also doesn’t operate out of a pro style O so you will need to get him in and look at his progressions on a whiteboard or using video to see if he can make the transition
Its going to be very interesting

Great Blue North has something like 7 QB's in the top 25. They have Mayfield pick #6 so he is certainly starting to get the love he deserves and I expect that to continue. The big stay in the pocket QB is one the way out. Deshaun Watson shows how things are changing. You need a guy who can make plays when the pocket breaks down. DC's realize the rules don't allow you to cover receivers so you have to blitz. In todays NFL the pocket is almost never clean. Mayfield excels at making plays when the pocket breaks down. This is why a QB's height is not as important as it use to be. When you move you create lanes to throw in. I agree with the poster that Mayfield reminds me of Bres. That is the first player I think of when I watch him play.

I have not watched all the QB's coming out . Darnold does he have small hands or something ? The fumbles stand out .
Mayfield is fun to watch hard not to like him the height
worries you a bit but his ability to move around will help negate that . To me it's not the end of the world if
we don't take a QB if someone wants to move up and we can
gain a few picks and get a guy like Chub and one of the
decent O-line players coming out . Possibly a center that
can anchor the inside unlike Richberg who should not be
re-signed .

Very true, but I'd still be surprised if the Giants draft a 6'1" QB.
And do we know for sure...
Milton : 11/12/2017 8:27 pm : link
...he's even 6'1"? If all anyone is going by is his listed height on the Wyoming website, chances are it's inflated.
