Eli is Brad Johnson/Trent Dilfer 2.0

Les in TO : 11/12/2017 1:33 pm
His two Super Bowl runs were mainly the result of sublime defensive play in the postseason, remarkable plays by the likes of nicks Cruz and tyree, some luck with two fumbled punts in SF and a lame Gronkoswki and end of game heroics by Webster mcquarters Tuck Strahan and Osi. He almost blew the 2011 bowl by not reminding Bradshaw to fall down at the one yard line. Just like Johnson Dilfer and Hostettler road on the coat tails of superior supporting casts, so did #10

QBs don't win alone but they are not an equal among 52 players. They touch the ball every offensive play, read defenses, and serve as the on field general. It's the reason they get drafted first overall and paid the big bucks
By that measure Eli's career win loss percentage puts him in Matt hasselbeck and mark Brunell territory . Slightly above average.

How many games over the course of his career has he been dominant start to finish? most of his games are either nail biters or blowout losses. He's maybe been on the winning end of ten easy games over the course of his 13 year career, less than one per season

And that's because his in game play is choppy: he's a top ten all time fumbler and will attempt risky throws rather than try to pick up a few yards with his legs

The Giants made a huge mistake paying him like a franchise QB when the cold hard truth is he is an above average QB who had the good fortune of playing on teams with superior surrounding talent. Even last year Odell and the defense bailed the team out on multiple occasions and it was the letdown of Odell and the D in the playoffs that caused the first round exit.

Life after Eli won't necessarily be doom and gloom. We may in fact win again with a true franchise QB. it actually can't get much worse.

Wow

He is not perfect but I would give him much more credit for our Super Bowl seasons than comparing him to Johnson and Dilfer.

Eli has been a great Giant. I do believe he even went to a pro bowl or 2.

Also a classy guy who is a former NFL man of the year.

I am proud to have #10 as my QB.

will be a hall of famer with a win in the SB. His legacy at least to this stage of his career is a guy who comes up big when the season is on the line and when the game is on the line - he has ice in his veins. He's not always pretty, he has no speed/ability to threaten defenses with running the ball and he makes the odd dangerous throw into double coverage, but he's a winner, plain and simple. This year he impressed me with his leadership, command of the offense and ability to cut his losses on plays without taking stupid risks. He's maturing and hopefully continues this awesome level of play for years to come. We are blessed.

But we'll have to see how his career plays out before entering him into the conversation with Brady, his big brother, Montana, Elway and Marino.

Well, there is this stat
Emil : 11/12/2017 2:06 pm : link
In 2011, Eli's 4,933 passing yards are the 14th most for a single season in NFL history. Of the 13 seasons ranked ahead of Eli's, Brees owns 6 of those seasons, Brady has 1, Stafford 2, Matt Ryan 1, Marino 1, and Peyton 1. Roethlisberger is tied with Brees for the number 11 slot.

That's not a longevity stat. Shows you what Eli is capable of in an offense that has a good pass blocking OL and receiving options. Eli is paying the price for organizational dysfunction.

This is a really good analysis of Eli. The stats show he has been mediocre over his career. But...

Above all, that may be Manning’s greatest skill: just being there. Since he took the starting quarterback job away from Kurt Warner in November 2004, the Giants have not had to worry about the position, allowing the team to devote resources and draft picks to other areas. By comparison, the Giants’ roommates, the Jets, have started 15 quarterbacks in this span. The Cleveland Browns have started 23.

Now Brady is a winner but he has a coach that has built a
a Team that has provided Brady with the right tools that

that takes players that fits his system .
Eli has beaten them twice on the biggest stage yet we have watched the last 6-7 seasons go down the tube because they
FAILED Miserably in playing to Eli's strengths which were
quite simple . Give him a stout O-line and an above average running game and he will beat any defense in a big game because of his on field intelligence and ability to make
the big throws in the biggest moments .

this is roughly how Eli is viewed by a lot of non-Giants fans and the rest of the league. A pretty mediocre QB who had a couple of great runs in the post-season.

Eli is like a real life Rorschasch test - you can look at his career and see what you want to see - either one of the best QB's in the history of the league (supported by his 2 SB's and ranking on all time career QB lists for yards, etc. etc.)....or you can look at his mediocre career rate stats(i.e. yards per attempts, QBR) and INT's, W-L record, and see a thoroughly mediocre QB who's best attribute was his durability wth some clutch performances thrown in (like the 538 article states).

Not that it needs to be said
Dave in PA : 11/12/2017 3:17 pm : link
But this is a ridiculous claim. Eli Manning, particularly in 2012, played significantly better Han Dilfer it Johnson ever played.

So his value is that he's always starting. And if he's always starting, doesn't that mean, uh, he's pretty good? Certainly we don't believe that QBs in this league keep their jobs if they just stay healthy.

And Eli gets blame for A play that never happened, it was Elis fault that Bradshaw ALMOSt didnt go in end zone. Not Bradshaws. Not Coughlins. But Elis. Plus you are just inventing that the Giants woukd have list there somehow since a FG was a guarantee and virtually no clock left.

I'd say Eli was a big time elite QB from the 2007 playoffs to about 3/4 of the way through the 2012 season. 2011 he was arguably top 3 in the league. The O line has ruined him the past few years and this horrendous offensive scheme doesn't help.

don't understand this black and white way of looking at things
djm : 11/13/2017 11:17 am : link
comparing Eli to Dilfer is just an awful, lazy and stupid way of looking at things. Dilfer hasn't done 1/4 of what Eli has done. Dilfer won a title. GREAT for him! He earned it! But he was a caretaker who didn't get in the way. He was never the reason why his teams won a playoff game. He simply did what was asked, made a few decent passes along the way and for a brief period did enough to help his great team win big. Once.

Eli has thrown for over 50k yards. He's helped lead his team on two glorious postseason runs where he was the catalyst. Why does everyone always point to the low scoring output in the super bowls as some sort of indictment? First off, he won both games against the best defensive mind in the NFL and he led his team to victory in the last minutes of both games. That counts for a lot. Second, he was GREAT in the ENTIRE postseason!

Eli doesn't have to be the best QB ever and he doesn't have to be Trent Fucking Dilfer. There's middle ground...fuck's sake....

Christ...some of you fucking blow at analyzing players. Sorry but the truth is the truth.

PS--Brad Johnson was a good QB. Again, stupidity.

but for all this talk of bad Eli these days, he's stats actually aren't bad at all despite playing on a sinking ship. The guy is on pace for 24 - 25 TDs and not that many INTS.

Eli could play better at times. He could also be a lot worse. The Giants are a mess yet there's Eli, doing everything he can to help the team win.

If Eli was trent Dilfer he wouldn't be on pace to finish with pretty good stats in ANY FUCKING SEASON let alone this one.

I hate stupid.

I can't believe so many people are actually dignifying this with a response.
Said it before, I'll say it again

Eli Manning has had a very unusual career that is difficult to compare to other QBs. For the most part, a very good but not really great career, but one augmented with two championship runs in which he played at his very best and executed late game-winning SB drives. Can't think of anyone else with both those kinds of highs and the lows that he's also had.
