Goodell wants 50 Million Per Year

bluepepper : 11/13/2017 12:03 am
Well only 49.5. Plus lifetime use of a private jet. And lifetime health insurance for his family.

I hate Jerry Jones but he's right to be questioning this no matter his ulterior motives. These would be ludicrous asks even if everything was hunky-dory in NFL-Land but are insane given all the controversies swirling around the league none of which Roger has handled particularly well.

Ironic...

And he can't afford his own health insurance? I know health insurance premiums are out of control, but I didn't think they were that bad.

I'd pay him 50 million to stay away from football
As much as Pete Rozelle fostered NFL's meteroic rise....

IMHO Goodell has singlehandedly led it to its decline.

I don't know how the NFL can put on all it's "We love the military" yesterday (and throughout the season) and support the clear "FU" the players have demonstrated for our flag, our anthem and our country. The hypocrisy is startling!

It is harder and harder to watch a sport where I don't like and care about the players, coaches and owners.

I can't believe I am saying this, but I agree with Jerry Jones. Maybe for different reasons and a different agenda, but something has to change and I don't know who can do it in this climate.

It may be the going rate
HomerJones45 : 11/13/2017 7:29 am : link
but for that kind of money, you are expected to keep things quiet, bring the NFL sponsorship money and keep the politicians off everyone's back. Goodell has done none of those things. The player conduct policy has been nothing but an expensive bone of contention which has brought the NFL zero good will, you've got a major sponsor complaining, TV ratings going down, and politicians making the NFL a target.

Jerrah is not alone; they want to get Roger out of the Hamptons and all the right parties and events and back to work and they are threatening his job to do it. Leaking his contract demands, which will seem outlandish the public, is part of that pressure.

For once, I'm on Jerry Jones side in this matter.

Goodell is a truly terrible commissioner.

A drop in the bucket compared to the money he's made the owners

That said, now that the era of using Los Angeles to extort new stadiums from the public is over, maybe it's the end of an era and they'd be best served to move on.
Just remember where the NFL gets the money...

the fans. We vote with our dollars.
I think there is a subtle political collision taking place here too...
bw in dc : 11/13/2017 3:44 pm : link
Most of the owners are conservative. Goodell appears, to me, to lean liberal. And he's been moving the league in a very progressive manner with these off-the-field social issues.

Further, he hired as his right hand man of communications, Joe Lockhart, the press secretary for Bill Clinton and a central figure in the Kerry campaign in 2004, who looks at everything through a political lens and aggressively supports liberal agenda...

In my view, this is now manifesting itself in a way where the league appears to be a political platform as much as an entertainment platform. Which I think this is certainly playing a role in pushing the rating downward.

So do you really want to give the face of your league $50M to promote an off-the-field agenda that conflicts with many of your owners' views?

most of the owners care about
giants#1 : 11/13/2017 3:57 pm : link
the money they make first and foremost. The "problem" (ignoring the moral/ethical side of the issues) for Goodell and the NFL when it comes to these political issues is that the NFL fan base is extremely split compared to the other major sports (NBA/MLB very liberal, NASCAR/CFB quite conservative). So for Goodell (the NFL) to pick a stance based on their bottom line interests is virtually impossible since any decision is likely to anger a significant portion of its fanbase.
