Salary Cap Disaster

Painless62 : 11/13/2017 7:38 am
Jenkins and JPP are 2 of the biggest problems in this team right now. Jenkins because he is a quitter punk. JPP because he as many predicted shouldnít have been resigned as he really is not that good. I believe Iím correct in that they would have almost 30 Million in dead money and a cap savings of only 2 Million if they are cut next year. 2019 is only slightly better. Actually , they should be cut today in an ideal world. Even if we get the best GM in football I donít know what they would or could do. I do know you canít have a winning team with these dudes on the team. Any thoughts? Would there be any team that would take these guys even for a low level pick? Out of the 2, Jenkins is the better player when he plays, so perhaps. Either way, more holes to fill . Why if we donít love a QB at the top of the draft we need to trade down and get as many picks as we can
JPP looks like he was playing for

the big contract and now has mailed it in. I was a huge advocate of resigning him, because his play is vital to our success....or failures.
Not sure you are correct on Jenkins

I believe all his guaranteed money is paid out after this season. He'd be about 6mil in dead cap space, about 7 mil in savings.

Giants can't cut JPP for the next several years. As you point out, would be cap disaster.
JPP may not be playing up to

his contract numbers, but I do no see any quit like we are seeing in the DBs. He may not be as effective as he should be, but that does not mean he quit.

JPP would be better served to say he quit...
Jenkins, Vernon and Snacks
bigbluescot : 11/13/2017 7:48 am : link
were essentially two year deals. All the guarantees are done after this year.

Vernon could be cut for a $5,000,000 cap gain in the offseason

Jenkins could be a cut for a $7,000,000 cap gain

Snacks $2,300,000 gain

and that's without getting into the intricacies of a post june 1st cut.

For all the stick, Reese rightly takes, those big FA contracts were very smartly structured from a cap pov.

I should say there's significant dead money if we cut them next year (Harrison: $7,300,000, Vernon: $12,000,000 and Jenkins: $6,000,000), but there's also a decent cap saving (of course you'd need to replace the players with that saving)
JPP hasn't
Gman11 : 11/13/2017 7:52 am : link
been good since 2011. Why they signed him to a big contract is beyond me. Most of us saw it. I can't believe the people doling out the money didn't.
We had a winning team last year with those two on the roster.
FStubbs : 11/13/2017 7:53 am : link
Granted, both have been very poor this year.
All true
TMS : 11/13/2017 7:55 am : link
But if we get a new GM or VP of FB that can evaluate personnel in the organization we can turn this around in a year or two. Let him pick the HC and revamp the scouting system. In this league a turnaround fast is possible. We will see if the Maras and Tisch give someone that latitude or not.
Its more fun watching the camera pan up to Mara and

McAdoo during the game vs the game...
Even JPP is theoretically cuttable next year
bigbluescot : 11/13/2017 7:58 am : link
if he was post June 1st'd ($12,750,000 dead money with a
$4,750,000 cap saving)

but I suppose it's still wasting a lot of the owners money.
You donít cut JPP next year
BillT : 11/13/2017 8:18 am : link
Itís that simple. Jenkins can be cut with cap savings. Not really that complicated or a disaster if any kind.
Screw the owners money
Painless62 : 11/13/2017 8:21 am : link
Could care less about their money. What players can we replace them with who are better. JPP is a salary cap nightmare for at least 2 more years. Again, all my Giants friends and I were praying they wouldnít resign him, and they did. He really should be a back up. He just isnít good enough all feelings aside. On a purely objective perspective, Moss is better than he is right now.
It doesn't reflect well on them
Kyle in NY : 11/13/2017 8:26 am : link
since they're professionals who should do their jobs regardless, but I'd like to see what someone like Jenkins does next season with a new coaching staff. This was one of the best corners in the league last season. Those aren't easy to replace.

Not going to cut everybody, and if I remember correctly, the team is in a decent spot with the cap.

Rewatch the game.

He was playing like it was a walkthrough.
JPP needs to really look in the mirror and tell this owner
Jimmy Googs : 11/13/2017 8:35 am : link
that he can play a whole lot better.

Otherwise, I am fine taking the cap hit...
Are you kidding me?

Watch the opening play.....how the hell do you not contain on that play? He either quit or he sucks, take your pick....if still not convinced, watch last week's game....he did not get to the qb once last week....this week, we were facing an OL that was 31st in sacks.....JPP could not even sniff a sack.....and on run plays he was being pushed 5 yards downfield.....this is a guy that is going through the motions.....the whole defense has quit......he should be one of the leaders on defense.....you either yell at your team mates, or rule by example.....he does neither.....

This season is one big cluster f*ck.....that 200M one year rental is biting us this year, and next year, in our big blue ass....
I tend to think
bigbluehoya : 11/13/2017 8:53 am : link
JPP/Vernon/Snacks/Jenkins are all here next year, though if a new regime views any of these as a net negative, I am almost always in favor of taking the medicine now and freeing your future yearsí salary cap entirely.

Marshall, DRC, Jerry, Harris are obvious subtractions. Thatís about $15m right there.

IMO, the cap isnít in as bad of shape as some would tell you. The roster is in awful shape, but none of these contracts are truly insurmountable objects.

For instance, the JPP contract is upside down in 2018 (negative cap savings by cutting), but if you lump him in with the obvious cuts group, itís still a net $10m savings.

Resist the urge to evaluate things completely in terms of ďdead moneyĒ. If a move has net cap savings, it has net cap savings. Consistently high dead cap numbers over a protracted span of years is probably indicative of some sloppy cap management or bad player evaluation (or both), but dead money in a given year or on a given contract isnít the end of the world.

The only consolation

Is that things get turned around pretty quick in the NFL

You have a hard on for him, so what you say is basically irrelevant. I didn't even look at the game until the 3rd quarter when it was 17-13. What I saw is both lines and offense playing, LBs are garbage, CBacks not even trying to disguise quitting.
Apple, Cromartie, and Jenkins were obvious. Collins I think is overplaying and out of position, but could be dogging it - he is the only one I not certain of....

But you are entitled to your opinion and your anger.
No....

Hard on for JPP? I'm not that kind of guy.....

Just go to NFL.com......watch last week's game and this week's game highlights, and concentrate on JPP......the Opening Play of yesterday's game...if that doesn't convince you, nothing will....

I think an hard-nosed Defensive coach
Simms11 : 11/13/2017 9:47 am : link
Should be brought in as the Head Coach. This team needs accountability and discipline. In addition, the defense needs to take on that personality, its missing. Heavy-handed my ass! When was the last time this team was heavy-handed or physical?
