Owners May Force Forfeiture of Cowboys?

When it comes to the lingering dispute regarding the Roger Goodell contract extension, much has been written and said about the potential nuclear option possessed by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. But the rest of the owners (or, more accurately, those who oppose Jones) have a nuclear option of their own.

They could, in theory, attempt to trigger forfeiture of the Dallas franchise.

A league source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that multiple owners already have been discussing the possibility, which flows from Article VIII of the NFL’s Constitution & Bylaws. Specifically, Section 8.13 authorizes the Commissioner to determine that an owner “has been or is guilty of conduct detrimental to the welfare of the League or professional football.” If the Commissioner believes the available sanction (a $500,000 fine) is “not adequate or sufficient,” the Commissioner may refer the issue to the NFL’s Executive Committee, which has the power to compel “[c]ancellation or forfeiture of the franchise in the League of any member club involved or implicated,” with a directive to sell the team....

Jones has his own ax to grind with the commissioner and so he holds up the entire league? How will that play out in the long run for this and every future NFL commissioner? And let's be honest (taking a page from Mr. Burns) the NFL commissioner is already "impotent as a Nevada boxing commissioner".

Jones is a horrible person, total spoiled child.

You keep referring to people in the stands as your mark. The priced normal people out of the stadium. That's an owners decision not a commissioner.

The biggest problem is they don't compete well with overall entertainment anymore. I'd much rather binge watch a Netflix show then watch 2 games I could careless about because I really don't have a rooting interest in them. I will however watch college football all Sunday, because my teams fate is tied to teams that could win or lose above mine AND the games are much more fun to watch.

If this is the cause of the rift I'm with Jones. Goodell doesn't have a dime of his own money invested in the NFL and walked into a situation at least as good as the present. I wonder what he would do if the owners offer him an extension at $20 million per year. If he turned it down my guess is someone at least as competent as him would take the deal.

It may play a part but Goodell absolutely botched the kneeling issue and it has to be hurting JJ's wallet. His handling of Kaepernick has been catastrophic.

is not going to dump its most profitable franchise. Like it or not, Dallas is the most valuable franchise is professional sports, and they sell the most merch. And the ONLY thing that matters in the NFL is money.

Hate to say it, but I too agree Goodell is ruining the game. It would be interesting to have someone with a different perspective running things.

I wonder where Kraft stands on this. He used to be very pro-Goodell, but that was before getting butt-raped by him on Deflate Gate. One day he's protesting the hell out of the league decision saying he was going to fight it. The next day, he's suspiciously dropping the matter completely.
I'm confused...
BillKo : 11/13/2017 9:59 am : link
what Goddell was supposed to do with the kneeling issue?

He essentially works for the owners, and the owners (for the most part) seemed to support the players. There were a few that didn't (Jones, Texans' owner).

If Goodell said all players need to stand at attention, you might have had a bigger issue.........right now it's still on 1-2% of the players.

It's not happening to teams where the team is good. We have an empty stadium because we stink. The Niners had stunk since they opened their new stadium. Rams have stunk in the past, but I think their attendance will get better now that they are getting better.

I'm sure the Patriots still sell out or are near capacity every game.

Create program within org. that helps with former players to transition into coaching & front office positions.

If a bunch of people with cheese bricks on their heads can own a team, then players whose talents/work & risk are the actual product, then they should be in ownership too.

Are you seriously suggesting that a billion + dollar asset simply be taken away from the owner that purchased it? Those people with cheese bricks on their heads PAID for their shares.

Just how has Goodell
section125 : 11/13/2017 10:47 am : link
ruined the league that was making record profits? And we know this because the CAP is rising every year.

JJ is pissed because Elliot got suspended. The anthem thing is on the owners - they are the bosses and Goodell works for them. It is obvious that a percentage of the fans are disgusted on the kneeling thing, but people are still showing up.

We don't like Goodell because of London games, Thursday Night Football and some weak handling of domestic abuse situations. But just what is it that JJ doesn't like?

This is not about Goodell against Jones
greatgrandpa : 11/13/2017 10:50 am : link
Goodell does what he is told by the owners. He is their front man in all respects. The owners wanted Thursday football and European football and Mexican football and Fantasy Leagues making the NFL even richer (Paul Hourning and Alex Karras were suspended from the league for a similar offense) so he negotiated top dollar for the contracts they wanted. Result - He made them even richer so they were happy with the money and with him. Hence the extension. It would not surprise me if the private plane stuff is coming from someone close to Jones.

As someone said above its always about the money - The owner's commodities (called the players) do not have guaranteed contracts in perhaps the most violent sport outside of the Roman Colleseum. Owners could easily expand the salary cap and add more players and take less profit but that will not happen. The leagues PR machine goes into overdrive for any troubling issue (eg domestic violence? Look at our "public service announcements" brain injuries? No relationship to the hits but "We created a great fund for some of the players") OK bring out our frontman to explain all of this! Now we have Jones who has always wanted more advertising money for himself from his team who he thinks IS the NFL while the other owners traditionally have agreed to share equally going back to the Mara and Halas families. This is about many of the owners sick of Jones (as we all are). Billionaires v Billionaires. How much money is enough? As the old saying goes - "Who do you root for?" The plague
Goodell already gets 30 a year.
NoPeanutz : 11/13/2017 10:56 am : link
What other job on planet Earth could he get where he could make that kind of money? The owners should just offer him 20 and tell him to take it or leave it. He has no leverage, so hard to understand his position.

McLovin28 : 11/13/2017 11:18 am : link
Goodell is a lot of this is on the owners. The owners have been greedy for a very long time and the NFL was due for a market correction. The owners have more control over the anthem kneeling than Goodell does. The suspending of players is on Goodell. The rules where we don't know what a catch is and the ridiculous replays is on the rules committee.
I also feel the consumer is changing and we have a lot more entertainment options that we'd rather consume. I feel if the make going to a game a more affordable experience that is where you're going to attract more of the younger generation. I went to my first Giants game with my dad 28 years ago and remember it like it was yesterday. I took my fiancée to the Broncos game this year (I live in Denver now) and probably dropped over $500 on the two of us. That's ridiculous to do that week in and week out. The game needs to be returned to the people if it's going to survive.

Caps @ 167mil this year X 32 teams. Even without every team right at the cap, a lot of money is payed each year and it adds up quick. Of course lots of structuring & percentages would have to be figured out and there is still revenue sharing across all teams. They could get a loan.

You're buying a team, an asset worth billion(s), a whole lot more than what the team's annual salary expense is. In some cases you're buying a stadium. What you propose doesn't even begin to deal with that.
