Spagnuolo

looie : 11/13/2017 10:32 am
Forgive me if this was brought up in a prior post, but what about his level of responsibility for this pathetic D that has essentially quit? Of course McAdoo as HC deserves the lion’s share of the blame, but what about the D coordinator? We all have a soft spot in our heart for Spags because of the Super Bowl years and last year’s performance by the D, and that’s understandable, but I don’t seem to hear many people calling him out for this absolute horror show by his unit. Am I right? Wrong?
Problem is

To me, scheme does not appear to be an issue. Effort is. For that I blame Spags for not firing his group up, but Millennial's are a different breed. It is not Spags fault that Apple is a worthless piece of trash.
Spags is fine.

We just need to spend another $200 mill next offseason
We’ve been discussing him as well
bradshaw44 : 11/13/2017 10:35 am : link
I admitted I had rose colored super bowl glasses on for the guy. And after last year I thought the magic was back. But honestly he can go as well. He holds responsibility in this mess as well.
If they fire McAdoo they really can't make him interim HC can they?

I mean... with the revolt in the secondary?
They have no pass rush with 4
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 11/13/2017 10:40 am : link
Without a pass rush they can't get pressure unless they blitz. And the LBs suck at blitzing and the safeties can't cover.

Even though Spags hasn't covered himself with glory, it's not a recipe for defensive success.

He has a big share of the responsibility.

I'm surprised they quit on him. I can see them hating Mac, but you'd think Spags would command enough respect that the players wouldn't quit on him. Apparently not
Spags
lugnut : 11/13/2017 10:47 am : link
is at LEAST as responsible as McAdon't. By definition he's closer to the D players, no? That part is really weird. I thought in his first tenure the players loved him, some said so(?) And I can't believe in the intervening few years that players fundamentally changed, "millenials" or not.

is the cornerbacks coach - let's blame him
Spagnuolo should be fired
RetroJint : 11/13/2017 10:59 am : link
last week, actually. He won't be because he is a reliable informant to Mara. 85% of McAdoo's disciplinary problems stem from the Corners not being happy with the coverages being called. Add a fucking dollop of there being a couple of high-priced linemen who are going through the motions.

The linebackers--ok they got wiped out yet again. Thompson stinks-ok that happens . You miss on an evaluation .

After the corners, the final and perhaps most poignant reason why he should be removed is the deterioration of Collins's play. This guy had a season comparable to Strahan's Dline impact or LT's effect from WOLB. Now he's lost .
Carl banks blaming it on injuries to the lbers

Spags blows. He might bounce back if Strahan, Tuck, Marshall

Spagnuolo has a good deal of worst/near worst defenses on his resume now.

I think it's safe to say the shine is off the star.

These damn millenials!!!
This may be Spags' last coordinator role.

He really has compiled a puzzling record as DC and HC.

The coach of the secondary. The players that are performing the worst. No thank you.

I always liked Spags, but damn this is becoming too coincidental.......he's around more bad defenses than good ones.
How can you justify keeping him
montanagiant : 11/13/2017 12:05 pm : link
With the effort this D has put forth this year? You have pro bowl players getting their ass handed to them by scrub receivers, no pass rush, and an embarrassing record of being the bitch to any TE that shows up

The defense improved in 2008 after losing Strahan AND Osi.
If making Spags HC takes him off the defense

Spags has never had a decent defense when the DL hasn't been dominant. His blitzes and coverages don't hold up. This group gets no pass rush from the front 4, and the rest of the D has folded as a result.
Spags has three problems...
BamaBlue : 11/13/2017 12:27 pm : link
holding the defense back this season:

Jenoris Jenkins
Eli Apple
JPP

Combined with the worst linebacking corps that's not in Cleveland, it's easy to see why this defense has given-up 84 points in the last 8 quarters.
It's occurred to me
Alan in Toledo : 11/13/2017 12:33 pm : link
that his defensive play calls are deliberately poor. Why, I wouldn't know, but they've become consistently terrible -- especially for someone with his record.
Mara has to realize,
Doomster : 11/13/2017 12:42 pm : link
that canning a DC, than an OC, and the a HC, has not worked....

A clean sweep is needed......but if the wrong guy is chosen, it will look like the 60's-70's again....
Spagnuolo has fielded one good defense since November 2008.
Big Blue Blogger : 11/13/2017 12:52 pm : link
His other units have run the gamut from awful to historically awful. There is absolutely no reason for him to survive the inevitable housecleaning.

That said, in the unlikely event that McAdoo is fired during the season, Spagnuolo is the logical choice for interim HC - simply because he has done it before and there's less risk of complete chaos on the sideline with him in charge than other candidates like Sullivan and Quinn. I hope none of them would be interviewed for the permanent job, but that's a different isssue.

I can't shake the suspicion that the Maras consider Mike Sullivan a head coaching prospect. Not sure why I think that - maybe it just comes from a lifetime of watching that family make decisions.
