"It's not the Giants way"

NYGmen58 : 11/13/2017 10:57 am
I've been wondering for weeks what horrific acts need to take place in order to get McAdoo fired, all of which have since materialized, and went to bed last night convinced there was no chance McAdoo would be coaching this week.

I have been pulling my hair out searching for answers as to why he hasn't been canned and all I hear on the radio, see on TV, or read in the papers/twitter/on here is that firing a coach mid-season is "not the Giants way".

What the hell IS the "Giants way"? Missing a tackle? Giving up a sack? Not showing up to practice? Suspending a player? Bumbling through a press conference?

What is the point on delaying the inevitable? What is to be gained? Mara is delusional and buys into Doo's hype that the team is going to go on some sort of a "run". Mindless! This team isn't winning any games! Fans have accepted that already, and we care more about the team than ownership does. Why can't they grasp that they are making things worse buy keeping this sociopath around?!

Why WOULDN'T you send out a message that the Giants won't accept this nonsense anymore and being the process of searching for a competent coach to replace this piece of garbage!? They are hurting the team more by denying how embarrassing, humiliating, and mortifying this season has been for Giants fans and alum. Is winning/competing no longer important to the Giants front office? Is that the new "Giants way"?!
when you fire a coach mid season

it makes it harder to recruit the next one.
Firing a coach midseason can be counterproductive

Some second rater could come in, win a couple of games, and then be hired permanently. See John McVay 1976.
since it's the players who have given up
I Love Clams Casino : 11/13/2017 11:06 am : link
and I don't think there's any doubt that some of the players HAVE quit, why give those same players what they want?

Would you just give a belligerent child anything they wanted?

I predict McAdoo stays because of that very reason.
You don't fire mid-season

that's the kind of thing that bad teams do and hinders the rebuilding process, see-Cleveland Browns...

Firing

Firing people is easy. Anyone can do that.

The more difficult, challenging path is to stay the course and fight your way through your problems.

Bill Parcells was a national joke in his first season as a head coach, in 1983. Many wanted him fired. They were wrong.

How many times did the outside world call for Tom Coughlin's head? Dozens? Hundreds? They were wrong every time.

One of the primary reasons John Mara has been an effective owner is that he doesn't listen to the fans and the media, and the constant call for change.

I take your point, but there's a lot of irony in the statement "that's the kind of thing that bad teams do."

You need to give a coach at least 2 years to know if you have head coaching material, and preferably 3. Parcells was in his first year, he had his prove it year in 1984, and the Giants responded. McAdoo is much closer to Handley than Parcells in that the Giants now have enough of a body of work to made a decision. This was a talented team, at least defensively, that stopped playing. The offense showed in the first few weeks that the Giants did not fix anything and McAdoo finally gave up playcalling duties too late.

I've outlined on here how eerily McAdoo seems to be making all the same fatal mistakes that Handley did, one after the other. Coughlin had a track record of success as an assistant and then HC at Boston College and Jax to see that the Giants had a proven head coach, so he earned the opportunity to show what he could do after 2006. McAdoo hasn't earned it, and that's part of the problem, he's gone hard ass and lost the team. Read this quote from George Young about Handley when he was fired

Quote:

"Your team has to feel it has a chance to win. If players think the coach is going to take them to Nirvana, that's a big thing. If they don't, it's tough. It's a matter of credibility. I don't know if the players felt strong enough about their chances to win."

None of us care more than. John Mara, get past the hysteria. You can t possibly believe that.

Two fire MacAdoo ok. And if guys like Jenkins play better with him gone, then they should also be fired immediately.

Quitting because you do not like the coach is a fireable offense.

Thirdly, the Giants are not going anywhere, allow the guys who have created this mess see it through.

Giants ownership is learning and will continue to learn a lot about who they want to keep going forward

Fourth, John Mara believes they are going on a run, I doubt that very much

That makes zero sense. First off, as has been mentioned many times, that isn't the Giants way. So doing it one time would not scare people off. They would probably see what everyone else sees, which is a team in disarray and needing a change. We are not the Browns, the Jets, Tampa or even Oakland, who have changed coaches pretty quickly and in the middle of past seasons.

Right now this deal is so bad it can only end one way. The question is when will they do it.

I think your spot on. What long term benefit does the franchise have from making that change right now? My only rationale, and it's pretty weak, is to not get laughed at during the thanksgiving game.

Long term for the franchise, quite honestly, it's probably best to lose. And this team won't win another game this season.

Sure, if they make a change, many fans may re-engage with the team, myself included, where as many of now are just catching parts of games or lowlights, but going 4-12 right now, in what's suppossed to be a really week draft, isn't going to help them as much as going 1-15 and picking second. Wentz was picked 2nd. We picked PRivers 4th. In this draft I think top 2 is exactly where we want to be. We have a great chance of that with no more wins and thinking San Fran can get 1 more win.

Note head to head doesn't impact draft order.
The last 7 games should be an audition for some players

So do we waste the rest of the season or start planning for the future this year? Mara must have decided by now what he is doing about the GM and the HC for next year. Or does his ego prevent him to allow the players who quit get rid of the coaches.
Don’t
Painless62 : 11/13/2017 1:58 pm : link
God forbid. You might get a small bump and an extra win if you did it. Could hurt our draft. Keep Mac so the suckitude continues
So much for the Mara FO stability which has failed miserably
joe48 : 11/13/2017 3:50 pm : link
That ship sailed. Fire Reese and start looking for a GM to get ready for the draft. Let the new GM fire McAdoo and the staff. GM picks a coach who brings in a new staff. Begin the process of rebuilding by releasing as many malcontents and highly paid veterans that makes sense given the cap implications.
