NFT: WC Qualifier Italy vs. Sweden

Nick in LA : 11/13/2017 2:16 pm
Looking at the starting 11 I am starting to come to terms with the fact that neither of my teams(USA-Italy) will be in the world cup next year.

Gabbiadini over El Shaarawy, Florenzi out of his role in a useless 3-5-2 formation..... fuckin hell.

Go Italy, some of us Italian Americans need this. please.
Go Sverige!!!

!!!!!!
Obvious handball by Italy in the box
B in ALB : 11/13/2017 3:18 pm : link
Should have been a penalty to Sweden. This ref is fucking awful.
and before that
Nick in LA : 11/13/2017 4:02 pm : link
was an obvious foul in the box by sweden, should have been a penalty both ways so far
No US
pjcas18 : 11/13/2017 4:45 pm : link
no Italy.

Awful for fans.
Italy and US are two very poor teams
CaLLaHaN : 11/13/2017 4:51 pm : link
Definitely not awful for fans. They didnt deserve to make it.

What is with the Italian manager not subbing on Insigne? Hes been amazing for Napoli.
yes, US and Italy
pjcas18 : 11/13/2017 5:10 pm : link
having poor teams is bad for their fans.

and probably bad for the world cup.

US may not be the biggest soccer market, but I'm going to guess they watch a whole lot more when the US in playing than not. Same with Italy.
no Netherlands either -
Del Shofner : 11/13/2017 5:12 pm : link
they've usually been fun to watch.

People will watch regardless
Go Terps : 11/13/2017 5:16 pm : link
They did before, they will again. There's also a lot more to it than just the US market. It's the biggest sporting event on earth by miles.

Pretty horrifying for Italy. And not nearly the same type of failure we saw from USMNT. European qualifying is very difficult by comparison to CONCACAF in terms of structure. Italy was in the same qualifying group as Spain, and only one of them could avoid this stage of qualifying. Sweden was only alive based on a superior goal differential over Netherlands.

Italy only lost one qualifier (in Madrid to Spain), and then lost 1-0 to Sweden on a wicked deflection. This is harsh on them.
No..

Morocco
I just watched the highlights

That must have been brutal viewing for the Italians.

One question I'd have for Italy is why in the world is Giovinco not on the team? Incredible on set pieces, links play, scores goals, plays in a similar 3-5-2 setup with his club...it just doesn't make sense.
Terps you know the answer to the q

uestion is MLS, as it was publically stated. Happy to see the Italians on the sideline - they need a new idea.
No USA, no Italy means severely damaged ratings in the USA
dpinzow : 11/13/2017 5:42 pm : link
No Netherlands either. This World Cup will be a snooze if England doesn't play well (and you know they'll find a way to mess up)
Italians jeered and booed the Swedish anthem
Nitro : 11/13/2017 5:47 pm : link
I think this Swedish player put it best.

La Gazzetta dello Sport: "Apocalypse" ....
It's tough to get in the WC via Europe
Bobby Humphrey's Earpad : 11/13/2017 11:03 pm : link
and when you have a combination of a tough group, an off generation and poor management, you get what's happened in Italy and Netherlands.

Here in the States, we should be paying more attention to Pulisic's piece in the Players Tribune that points out the weaknesses in the US system and underlining why more of our top youth talent should be going to Europe.

It looks
Pete in MD : 11/14/2017 4:15 pm : link
like Denmark is locking up the last UEFA spot.
