NFT: Today's Yank's update. Chad Green to start

Beer Man : 11/14/2017 4:46 pm
The team has indicated that they will bring Chad Green to spring training as a starting pitcher.
Not sure if that is good or bad news:
1. He was a great weapon out of the pen
2. He has two primary pitches that he throws. Most successful starter have a few more that they use to constantly keep hitters guessing.

he'll have to ask for or approve any trade. Frazier is definitely trade bait but that doesn't mean he's going to be traded. The Yankees have more guys than they have spots. I expect a trade soon to clear 40 man space and possibly a bigger trade later in the winter 3 or 4 for 1 if they have a target they really want. The Yankees have a lot of really good trade chips.
There was an article a couple of weeks ago that claimed Seattle may be interested in acquiring Ells, but that the Yankees would have to eat a big chunk of his salary. I don't know what Hal thinks about that, but Ells is taking up a roster spot that is needed to protect some of the future Yanks from being exposed to the Rule-5 draft.
Headley
B in ALB : 11/14/2017 5:28 pm : link
Can go screw. It's all about Torres, Ohtani and getting younger. Frazier adds solid veteran depth glue-guy stuff. Try to unload Headley for a bucket of balls and some rosin bags.
I don't think Todd Frazier's in play at all.
bceagle05 : 11/14/2017 5:33 pm : link
Cash made it clear at the time of the trade that he was a rental, and he's usually blunt and honest about such things. Yankees have Headley under contract, a couple of prospects knocking on the door, and Machado hitting free agency next year - I can't fathom handing Toddfather a multi-year deal. I'm tired of Chase as well, but his proficiency at first base probably keeps him around as insurance at both corners.

If they find a way to move Ellsbury and keep the DH spot open for a combination of the extra outfielder, Sanchez and (hopefully) Otani, we'd have a great, young, flexible 25-man roster.
I wonder
mitch300 : 11/14/2017 5:39 pm : link
by Cash telling Ells that he is the 4th outfielder, it will give him the incentive to waive his NT stipulation.

True, but I thought that Fraizer's contributions, enthusiasm and leadership down the stretch may have changed Cash's thinking and possibly pushed Headley out the door.

Probably close to 0% out of Spring Training, but substantially higher later in the season if he regains his pre-injury form.
If the Yankees eat 50% of Ellsbury's contract
arniefez : 11/14/2017 5:48 pm : link
they'll save about 10 million a year. Because the guys who would replace him don't make anything. Frazier or McKinney or Cave, etc. They'd all make rookie scale for 2 or 3 years.
May be wrong BP guy
old man : 11/14/2017 5:49 pm : link
But weren't they stretching Green's out innings and sort of a pitch count from out of the BP, and also have a winning start in September?
Beltran has reported interest in the Yanks manager position
adamg : 11/14/2017 5:58 pm : link
Writers don't seem to think he's a fit. Too soon for the position.

Didi had good words for Beltran as a mentor.

He'd be an interesting guy for the job.
Headley

Is a lousy fielding third baseman. It would be a big step backwards to see him at 3rd again.

Ellsbury has $21.1M due to him annually through 2020 with a 2021 club option that will turn into a $5M buyout. So call it $66M due to him going forward. Yanks are going to have to eat $50M of that to move him. What team would voluntarily pay him more Han $5M per year in his current useless state?

Dave in PA : 11/14/2017 6:06 pm : link
$68M total due to him including 2021 buyout. Yankees are eating way more than 50% of that contract to move him, IMO
Good point
arniefez : 11/14/2017 6:12 pm : link
But even if they eat 45 million they'd be saving money and have a better player in his place.

I have a feeling the yanks possibly move Frazier if the right deal comes along. He doesn't look at pitches and I'd have to think the yanks love hicks and Gardner. Plus they have outfielders down on the farm. Frazier showed enough to garner interest. Maybe the yanks feel it's wise to sell high. Who knows...

I hope that is not the case. Hicks had a good start this past season, but by year end was back to the same old / same old. The upside and youth of Fraizer should compel the Yanks to keep him over Hicks. Not to mention Gardy is on the back 9 of his career.

No complaints about T. Frazier's contributions this year - good guy and he can pick it at 3B. But I can understand if he's viewed as a rental.
Iíd much prefer Frazier to Headley as the vet 3B
mfsd : 11/14/2017 8:37 pm : link
To hold the fort until Torres is ready, then be a bench guy...but Headleys under contract, while Frazier will likely want a multi year deal - and no way we should give him that

Headleys an OK vet bat but his defense sucks...but donít want to bring some other vet in to block Torres.

So in sum, I suspect we suffer Headley until Torres is ready to take the job

I agree with this (as I think most do). They would have to eat a vast majority of this contract. I think it's worth it to do so. The contract is a sunk cost at this point.
I just hope Torres is given the job if he earns it in camp.

Like Severino he will develop the third pitch. Smart move with plenty of upside.

Frazier and Headley are yesterdays news. Lets stop being so sentimental and step back and see what Todd Frazier brings to the table. Not enough.

Gardner has one year left on his deal. Want to let him move on for zilch or package him in a deal now? If you do the door opens for the red head. Fine with me if Clint Frazier is packaged in a deal as he is a viable chip to bring back some gold

Torres might be better at second then 3rd. Leaving Castro as trade bait or a DH?

I'd love to pick up some of those KC Royal FA's. If you picked up their gold glove first basemen then Bird becomes our DH. Or if instead you picked up Moustakas their lefty hitting 3rd basemen then Torres can move to 2nd where he belongs. Many possibilities. The future is now

To be fair, that's also exactly what Cash should be saying if he's looking to trade Castro (or is entertaining offers for Castro). Headley doesn't really have trade value, so he wouldn't be damaging anything by putting it out there that Torres will compete with Headley. All that does is at least limp in on the idea that Torres could play 2B which would make Castro somewhat expendable.

Or maybe that's just my own wishful thinking that Cash would try to get rid of a guy who takes no walks, swings at everything and is clumsy in the field and that if he's as focused on analytics as he seems, he wouldn't take a ++ middle infield bat and stick him at a corner where his bat isn't nearly as big of an advantage.

I think most agree with you that Frazier and Headley are yesterdays news. However, the team still needs a stopgap or insurance policy at 3B for next year to be the bridge to Torres or Andujar. I prefer Frazier be that bridge. But regardless of which direction the team goes, next year should be that player's last in a Yankee uniform.
Frazier will likely command
davek3698 : 11/15/2017 8:47 am : link
a 3+ year contract. Though not perfect, Headley is a nice stopgap for Andujar. Could be a lot worse. Same goes for Castro, though he is on the books for '19 as well.

What in God's name does Torres pushing Headley at 3rd base have anything to do with Castro?

Because Torres pushing Castro reduces Castro's trade value theoretically. Like I said, that could just be my own wishful thinking because I'd rather have Torres at 2B and would like to sell high on Castro rather than count on a guy with poor plate discipline and clumsy defense to maintain his trade value.
I'm not sure anyone in MLB is fooled by Castro

preferably a catcher to put in the pipeline. Torres, Wade, Torreyes and Estrada should be give a chance in spring training to play 2B and 3B. Todd Frazier was a great pick up last season, but he makes no sense right now. The Yanks are loaded with young infielders and if you are going to invest in a free agent, wait a year for Machado. Headley is signed for one more year. He starts the year as the 3B and Wade, Torres and Andujar get reps to see if one is ready to step in. If Torres grabs the 2B job and Andujar eventually takes over at 3B...great. Headley then becomes the veteran, switch hitting backup 1B/3B/DH. If not, the Yanks will have re-set the luxury tax and they can make a run at Machado after 2018.
