NFT: Yankees missed trade

mdthedream : 11/15/2017 12:16 pm
I wonder if the Yankees pulled the trigger on Justin Verlander trade, Would have won the World Series? I was all for this trade seeing at the time I didn't feel we had a number one or at least not enough staring pitching. Feel we might have lost a real good chance of winning it all.
Yes - Yanks would have won

but that is hindsight now. Houston sold their soul for this win. Yanks don't want to pay Verlander 40 million the next two years. Houston does not beat Yanks without his two starts.
Houston

had to make that trade. The Yanks were not in that position they are sitting pretty for another long stretch of success.
Yankees would've had to given up something

really good for Verlander. Don't forget that.
To be honest
mdthedream : 11/15/2017 12:26 pm : link
I would take Verlander at 20mill per season.
What did Detroit want

in exchange?
Gotta figure it was Torres, Abreau, Sheffield quality prospects.

His numbers were not as good at the time of the trade. His Houston numbers were a lot better than Detroits.

Considering Verlander's salary I don't think that the Yanks would have needed to give as many high-end prospects that they DID give up to get Gray. And they likely wouldn't have traded for BOTH pitchers.
Maybe they would have won
PaulBlakeTSU : 11/15/2017 1:10 pm : link
and maybe not. Baseball postseason is a big crapshoot. To treat it definitively is an exercise in futility.
I don't think
mdthedream : 11/15/2017 1:23 pm : link
that was what they where asking it was more about saving 40mill over two years. So a couple good prospects would have done it. I would think one of the young outfielders and something else.
It would have kept Houston from winning it...
Dan in the Springs : 11/15/2017 1:28 pm : link
but might not have meant the Yankees winning it. First, Houston did something with his mechanics to get him right. No guarantee the Yankees would have fixed him. In fact, it's likely the Yankees didn't see an easy fix when they scouted him.

Second, if Houston doesn't get him the playoff seeding would have likely been different. Who knows how the Yankees would have matched up potentially against someone other than Houston?

Fun to discuss among fans as a thought exercise, but not fair to judge the Yankees harshly, or to say that a missed trade cost them a WS imo.
I can't argue with passing on him. Now if Detroit would have agreed to

Ellsbury and 1/2 his contract????? Yes please.

All that said, despite how big Verlander was for them, the Yanks had him on tthe ropes in Game 6. The Springer catch on Frazier saved the day. That hits the wall and it's 3-2 with Frazier on 2nd the Yanks with all the momentum
we weren't going to take on his salary
RasputinPrime : 11/15/2017 3:41 pm : link
which was almost a reason this Houston deal didn't get done.

Great 2017 season and regret nothing.
No regrets

play the long game
Houston was committed to win now.

Yanks have a long view and presume they didn't want to sacrifice it.
Point is valid, but This was an excellent season for the Yankees.
